Ice Joker: Slot Overview
Developer Play’n GO turn the heat down in Ice Joker, a Vegas style slot filled with classic symbols and gameplay. Well, Vegas during the next ice age since the studio went for an Arctic angle in an attempt to add a touch of novelty. It’s hard to get too excited about another one of these fruit-filled games, though there is a fair amount of sticky/spreading wild action going on and a bonus game that piles on free spins. Let’s hold judgement back till we’ve seen what the game is capable of.
Ice Joker uses a conventional 5-reel, 3-row grid, crossed by 20 fixed paylines. Play takes place on a frozen lake, surrounded by jagged mountain peaks, while above them, an Arora Borealis twinkles amongst stars in the night’s sky. Clearly, Ice Joker isn’t the escapism you want on a frigid winter night if you’re pining for a warm-weather break. It actually doesn’t come across as all that inviting full stop. The background’s a bit blurry, yet the shimmering reels add a little bit of magic. As does the ambient music which sounds like the comedown set at a warehouse party, and is possibly one of the most appealing parts of the game.
Playable on any device, punters start the thaw by selecting bets from 20 p/c to £/€100 per spin. A standard Play’n GO bet range is coupled with an equally dependable default RTP rating of 96.23%. Medium volatility and modest potential make the game less suited to the hardcore gamers out there while casual players are more likely to find comfort in the math model. Wins are quite frequent, but mostly paltry unless the lucky sevens come into play, which is a rare occurrence.
Winning combinations in Ice Joker play left to right, starting from the leftmost reel. At least three of the same symbol is needed to form a winning combination, with 7 clichéd icons to make use of. Lows consist of four fruits – cherries, lemons, grapes and plums, while the remaining three are bars, stars, and lucky sevens where five of a kind from the high pay lot is worth 5 to 50 times the stake.
Ice Joker: Slot Features
All of the extras in Ice Joker star the cackling ice lady in one form or another. The lesser feature is Frozen Free Spins, which are stretched when the Winters Wonder Wheel gets involved.
The Ice Joker symbol appears only on the three middle reels. For one, it is wild and can substitute for any symbol except the snowflake scatter to make a win. Also, whenever it lands, 3 Frozen Free Spins are awarded. The Ice Joker symbol is sticky for the three spins, expanding by one position on each spin. Once it has filled the reel, it is removed. It is possible to land new Ice Jokers on Frozen Free Spins to receive 3 more spins. At most, players can win up to 51 free spins.
The other special symbol is the snowflake scatter which appears on reels 1, 3, or 5. When 3 are in view, the Winters Wonder Wheel is unlocked, rotating to award 2 to 7 Ice Jokers. During the round, if an Ice Joker lands on the reels it activates Frozen Free Spins as described above. If none land, then one of the awarded Ice Jokers is added to the grid instead. If no more Ice Jokers land by the end of the Frozen Free Spins, another one of the collected Ice Jokers is again placed on the reels. When no more collected jokers can be added, the feature ends. As before, players can win up to 51 free spins.
Ice Joker: Slot Verdict
Well, there’s not a whole lot to say really. Ice Joker does its thing in an adequate manner without arousing much passion either way. Unfortunately, it’s not bad enough to tear shreds out of, nor interesting enough to elicit much more than a breathy ‘okay then’ once the gaming is done. It feels like shelf filler Play’n GO could have hammered out in their sleep.
A significant chunk of the RTP appears allocated to the base game Frozen Spins feature, making it that little bit harder to trigger the full bonus round. When snowflake scatters do eventually trigger, the main feature a ton of free spins can be awarded. If you win a high number of Ice Jokers from the Winters Wonder Wheel, the bonus can end up being pretty lengthy indeed. Almost too lengthy at times, the process occasionally descending into the kind of drag you just wish would end. Wins do add up over time, but it often amounts to a few pennies here, a few pennies there. Sure, luck is luck, and ours might not have been firing on this occasion.
Should a player’s good fortune be in when playing Ice Joker, full screens of lucky seven symbols are worth 1,000 times the bet which isn’t bad at all, building to a total potential of 3,000x when the snowflakes align. Not massive perhaps, though quite decent for this sort of light, fruity gaming.
Add it up, and Ice Joker is a so-so fruit slot set in a slightly different location than usual. If you’re not big on the style, then Ice Joker isn’t one you’ll hurry back to after a test run. Unless perhaps you fall for the flirty giggles of the Ice Joker when she lands, or the Arctic thing catches your fancy.
Play’n GO fires off a place holder to keep up with demand, in a game that might entertain fans of relatively light, fruity filled gaming.
