Jewel Scarabs (Red Tiger): Overview

One of the most popular slot categories over at Red Tiger is ancient Egypt. Jewel Scarabs is the third slot flavoured with the theme to come off their production line. This time around, instead of Pharaohs, or gods, or books, the star of the show is the humble scarab. To many people, the scarab is just an annoying beetle that might give you a nip if you get to close. Though, it is unlikely to burrow under your skin like they do in that movie The Mummy. To the ancient Egyptians, this creature symbolised immortality and resurrection. You won't find benefits like that here, but the insect is the key to Jewel Scarabs's most profitable moments. It has turned up in many other Egyptian slots, so does Jewel Scarabs have anything new to offer?

Red Tiger does have a talented graphic and sound team who have done a good with Jewel Scarabs while being restrained at the same time. A subtle Egyptian spirit is captured by the desert at dawn, or sunset, while an appropriate soundtrack plays in the background. Visually it's not astonishing, but the resolution is high, and the game is pleasing to look at. This highly volatile game runs using 5 reels, 3 rows, and just 9 fixed paylines. Bet levels are rather modest and start at 10 p/c per spin and go as high as £/€10. RTP is calculated at 95.77%, which is just a shade under the current 96% average that slowly seems to be creeping downwards. Altogether, these settings offer some good chances to work with the solid payout potential.

The paytable is short and sweet, with not much in the way of extras that need to be understood. Symbols come in low pay and high pay groupings with a mix of old and new. The older, low pay symbols are 9 to A royals. Each one has been decorated with a theme inspired flourish such as serpents and ankhs. The premiums are made up of Eye of Ra, Falcons, cats, and an Anubis bust which is the most valuable at 20 times the stake for a five of a kind combination. The base game ticks along alright. A 5/5 hit rating helps ensure a steady trickle of small wins to keep the flow going while you wait for the feature to open the game up.

Jewel Scarabs (Red Tiger): Features

wild scarabs
Main game

Jewel Scarabs is a rather simple and straightforward slot that aims for some good old retro style gaming. There isn't a whole lot of features involved, but those included still carry the game quite well.

As you probably have already guessed, the scarab symbol is the main event, and it affects the game in several ways. The first is as the wild which substitutes for any of the regular pay symbols. It is also worth the same as the Anubis symbols when five land on a payline.

Where the scarab brings the game to life is as the scatter - if 3 or more land then they trigger the Golden Spins round. During this free spins section, the scarabs that triggered the feature remain on the reels. They also each get a multiplier attached to them that starts at x1. Whenever they are used as part of a winning combination their multiplier increases by 1x without limit. When more than one wild multiplier is used on a payline, they multiply by each other to create better returns. For example, a x2 and x4 multiplier in a combo results in a total multiplier of x8.

The wilds remain in the bonus round for the full duration, but in between spins, they fly around the reels and stop in random positions. Other wilds are able to enter the round and also become flying, multiplier wilds.

Jewel Scarabs (Red Tiger): Verdict

Did the world need one more Egyptian themed slot with a symbol that is both a wild and scatter? Not really, but that's okay. Jewel Scarabs isn't a bad slot at all. It's not the best example from the category, but it is far from being the worst. It sits comfortably in the middle of the bell curve with enough elements to give it some relevance. So no, it is not super original but the way the scarabs are both wild, multipliers, and move around the reels in between free spins does have a fresh feel to it. For one, it lets the scarabs spread their wings - literally.

Again, it might not be super original, but it's pretty enjoyable all the same. Graphic standard is good, and it's one of those quick fire slots that don't take much effort to get into. When compared to other Red Tiger Egyptian slots it is an improvement on Ra Legend. Though it is not quite as intricate or as good looking as Mega Pyramid was.

When it comes to potential it doesn’t quite live up to the load screen’s promise of ‘Untold Ancient Riches', but it's no slouch either. Get the flying scarabs to do their thing, and wins of up to 5,245 times the stake can theoretically be achieved - a respectable figure given the simple rules and nature of the game.

If we were to offer a little constructive criticism it would be that Jewel Scarabs might have benefited from an additional feature. Even something small like a different wild to mix things up? What it does is fine, but it relies solely on one symbol for all of its best moments, and as you might expect, there can be lengthy waits for the bonus round to be triggered.

Overall, Jewel Scarabs is a reminder that as long as a slot offers something slightly original it can bring relevance to a thrashed genre. Jewel Scarabs' tweak is probably not enough to win hordes of new Egyptian slot converts to the fold, but combined with the volatility and potential it is enough to give fans something new to try out.
