Chasing balding wizards instead of handsome alpha males in Barcrest's Lady of Avalon
Another "Book of" clone
You guessed it - expanding bonus symbols
Lady of Avalon (Barcrest): Review
The last Barcrest slot we reviewed was nothing short of a disaster and actually one of the worst slots we've played in quite a while, which says a lot given all the Microgaming products we've had to wade through as of late. Their latest effort, entitled Lady of Avalon, is less of a drama queen and more of a safe bet. Played on a 5-reel, 3-row, 10-payline reel set, what you get here is essentially a highly volatile "Book of" clone but with a fantasy theme.
It's all about the free spins here, where expanding symbols can result in significant wins. As is typically the case, Barcrest likes to target high rollers and as an incentive to raise your stakes, Barcrest will reward you with a higher RTP if you set the bet size to 2€ or higher (96% as opposed to 94%). Not something we agree on, but at least they're transparent about it. You can play Lady of Avalon from 10 cents to 500 Euros per spin on mobile, tablets and, of course, desktop computers.
In line with other Barcrest creations, Lady of Avalon is simple in design. Set against a moonlit lake backdrop, symbols include A to 10 royal values as well as black horses, spellbooks, medieval castles and wizards. The latter is the equivalent of the Explorer symbol in Book of Ra (Novomatic), with 5 of them on a full payline giving you 500 times your stake. Lady Avalon herself doubles as both the scatter and the wild and will give you 250 times your stake should you land 5 of her on a payline.
Lady of Avalon (Barcrest): Features
It's all about the free spins feature in Lady of Avalon which is activated when you land at least 3 scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. You start with 10 free spins, but before the round begins, a special symbol is randomly chosen as your expanding symbol. When it lands on the reels, it will expand to cover the full reel. Furthermore, the symbols do not have to connect in order to form winning combinations.
If you land a full screen of the wizard symbol, you'll pocket the maximum payout of 5000 times your stake. You can also retrigger the feature - if 3 or more scatters appear on the reels, you'll get 10 extra spins. There are no limits to how many times you can retrigger the bonus.
Lady of Avalon (Barcrest): Verdict
What you get here is a rather bland "Book of" clone and if you're a low-roller, there is no reason whatsoever to choose Lady of Avalon over Book of Ra or Book of Dead (unless your casino has set the RTP on said slots to a setting below the default value). There's also something about the playability when it comes to Barcrest, the count-ups in particular, that makes them a bit unattractive to play in our opinion, although not a dealbreaker if the game is good.
If for whatever reason you don't have access to Novos or Play'n GO, Lady of Avalon is an ok substitute. After all, the paytable is identical to the "Book of" slots, as is the 5000x max win potential. Unexpectedly, the best part about Lady of Avalon is the soundtrack. You have to put it on auto-spin to be able to appreciate it, however, as Barcrest otherwise normally don't play music between spins.
