Leprechaun’s Magic Slot: Overview

Roll up leprechaun fans for another dose of shamrocks and Guinness courtesy of developer Max Win Gaming, a rather low-key developer with just a couple of releases since their inception in 2015. The last one was a one-line fruit slot, so the team clearly like to take a simplistic approach to gaming. Their latest, Leprechaun’s Magic, is yet another Irish themed slot powered by Red Tiger’s platform. It’s a simple game with an old school feel where the magic has been heavily inspired by older classic slots. There has been a slight addition to the central feature, so it’s not a straight copy; a dose of originality has been injected, however small.

The funny thing about the Irish/leprechaun theme is that developers are never subtle when using it. They all seem to believe that you need to feel like you’ve knocked over a shelf in a Dublin tourist shop and been showered in green and gold trinkets. Leprechaun’s Magic manages all of that, and fans of the theme will be happy knowing that the game is packing in the Irish clichés department. Interestingly, Ra fans might also be intrigued by what else Leprechaun’s Magic is packing which we will cover in the features.

There are no surprises when it comes to the location of where the action takes place. Set deep in the Irish countryside, in an old forest where the grass is lush and overgrown, clovers grow in abundance, and a couple of hanging lanterns provides ambient lighting. The scenery is pleasant, and exactly what we have come to expect from these sorts of games. On the technical side of things, the game runs on a 5-reel, 3-row, 10-payline layout. Paylines light up on wins in a way that nods respectfully to its slot forbears, especially with expanding symbols. Volatility has come out at a raging 5/5 on Red Tiger’s meter and is matched by a decent default RTP rating of 95.95%.

A rundown of the paytable is a mandatory step in any review, but you will probably already know what is coming up. Max Win has included 9 base game pay symbols - 5 low and 4 high. Low pays are 10-A royals that have been decorated with a cute wee Celtic pattern carved into them. The high pays start with a pipe, a top hat, and a horseshoe. The table wouldn’t be complete without a leprechaun somewhere. Here he takes pride of place as the game’s highest paying symbol worth a hefty 500 times the stake for five of a kind. All hackneyed symbols to be sure, but what is a little irregular is the exclusion of a wild symbol. Max Win has filled that gap by adding a couple of features that will feel very familiar to a lot of players.

Expanding Symbols is the most common feature and appears in both the base and bonus game. The first thing to be aware of is that above the reels is a bar that displays all of the game’s pay symbols. When a win occurs, the winning symbol is lit up on the bar and turned into a Golden Symbol. On the very next spin, if 3 or more Golden Symbols land they expand to cover their respective reel.

What’s good, and 'Ra-like', is that they create winning lines no matter which reels they are on. For example, if Golden Symbols cover reels 1, 2, and 5, that’s good enough for a bunch of three of a kind wins. The win lines light up when this happens and wins are paid. During base game spins, Golden Symbols last for one spin and return to normal once concluded.

Golden Symbols get a significant expansion during the Magic Spins Free Spins feature. To gain entry, you need the pot of gold scatter symbols to land. They can land anywhere, and at least 3 in view triggers a spin on the Magic Wheel. The Wheel is split into segments with different values with a chance to score up to 16 free spins. However, if 4 or 5 scatters triggered the round, then they add an extra 4 or 8 free spins to the Magic Wheel’s result. The free spins round is similar to the base game, except that when winning symbols are turned into Golden Symbols, they stay that way for the full duration of the feature.

Leprechaun’s Magic Slot: Verdict

Endless reams of Irish themed slots roll off the production line so let’s do our best to be objective here. It would be easy, and somewhat enjoyable, to hack Leprechaun’s Magic into tiny pieces, and then hack each of those tiny pieces into more tiny pieces, but it’s not so bad. The lack of originality in both theme and features doesn’t exactly garner it points, but the true test comes with gameplay and rewards which can be quite enjoyable at times.

Fair dues, expanding symbols that pay anywhere are so last decade - and beyond, but Max Win Gaming has conjured up the obligatory twist to freshen up the old device. The twist is a small one, but quite nifty when it works your way, and that is the inclusion of expanding Golden Symbols during the base game. It’s a nice touch and improves the game’s appeal.

The real magic is in its potential though. Wins of 5,000 times the stake might not create headlines, but they do raise an eyebrow when you realise that figure is technically possible on one spin with a grid of the leprechaun symbols. Sure, that is bound to be a very rare occurrence, but the possibility increases the appeal all the same.

So yes, Leprechaun’s Magic is one more nauseatingly generic leprechaun slot with all the clichés and a borrowed feature. But, it might still appeal to fans of the genre, and possibly other players interested in experiencing Ra dynamics in a different setting.

Fair

Max Win Gaming rehashes a classic ‘Book of’ feature to liven up their latest Irish themed slot with excellent single spin win values up its sleeve.
