Loki Lord of Mischief: Slot Overview

For their third slot, Blueprint Gaming sister studio Lucksome has picked the so-called trickster god to colour the action in Loki Lord of Mischief. Loki is one of the most interesting gods in any pantheon, sometimes represented as the bad guy, sometimes good, yet never predictable. Somewhat morally hard to pin down, he seemingly shifts from one side to the other as the mood strikes. Loki certainly makes for relatively unique subject matter, as he's usually the side character in games that focus more on Thor or Odin, of which there are many.

Whether the decision to use Loki to headline his own slot was an inspired choice or influenced by the Marvel TV series coming out around the same time is debatable. However he got there, Loki pops up throughout the game at various points, bringing his unique brand of unpredictability. It all begins in the base game, in what looks like Jotenheim, the icy land of the giants. In the Marvel books, Loki can often be found residing here, and he was said to be the son of a giant named Fárbauti too, so it fits. A 5-reel, 20-payline game grid sits smack bang in the middle, where three of its rows are revealed to start with. The two covered rows may be unlocked later during the bonus games. A heavy chanting soundtrack caps a scene which has a strong Fantasma Games feel to it. One comparison that sprang to mind was Hades River of Souls though the two are miles apart in terms of gameplay.

Loki Lord of Mischief slot

As is the case in Lucksome slots, opening the paytable wholesomely provides every stat needed to get a complete picture of how Loki Lord of Mischief operates. First of all, we've got volatility, rated at 8 out of 10, then bonus frequency and win frequency of 4/10 and 6/10, respectively. The RTP during regular gameplay or when hitting the Lucksome Locks spin feature is 96%, rising a smidgen to 96.01% when buying the bonus. Available on all devices, Loki Lord of Mischief provides stakes of 20 p/c to $/€200 per spin.

Moving to symbols, which Lucksome calls the 'Winplan', we find eight regular pays and a high-value wild. Four card suits start the Winplan off, then come serpents, horses, birds, and wolves. The nicely chosen animal icons range in value from 4 to 100 times the stake for five symbols in a winning combination. The wild symbol is worth an enormous 2,500x the bet if five of them land across a payline, but most of the time wilds substitute the other pay symbols to complete wins.

Loki Lord of Mischief: Slot Features

Loki Lord of Mischief slot

Loki Lord of Mischief has quite a lot of features that tie into each other, including mystery symbols, Lux Reels, Super Lux Reels, Lucksome Locks, a Feature Upgrade, a bonus buy, and a gamble option.

Loki is the mystery symbol, and in the main game, he converts into a money scatter symbol, helping to trigger Lux Reels features. If Loki and a Thor's Hammer symbol land at the same time, one symbol on each reel between them is converted into a money scatter.

When 6 or more money scatters symbols are in view, the Lux Reels feature is triggered - 3 spins are awarded on a grid only displaying the triggering money scatters. If new money scatters hit, spins are reset to 3, and the feature ends when all positions are filled, or spins run to zero. Moreover, it is also possible that 1 or 2 of the covered rows is activated, providing extra positions to land scatters. If Loki lands, he turns into a big value money scatter.

On the middle three reels, Tree of Life bonus symbols appear - 3 of them in view triggers the Super Lux Reels feature. Extra covered rows may be revealed for this feature as well. Before Super Lux Reels start, players choose one of these 3 options:

  • Low volatile option where money scatters are worth up to 50x and multipliers of x4-x5 are possible.
  • Medium volatile option where money scatters are worth up to 100x and multipliers of x2-x5 are possible.
  • High volatile option where money scatters are worth up to 500x, and a multiplier of x5 is possible.

Super Lux Reels begin with an empty grid, awarding 6 initial spins to land money scatters on before the 3 normal Lux Reels spins are played. Keep in mind, landing money scatters on the 6 initial spins does not reset them. When Loki lands in Super Lux Reels, he either reveals a money scatter or multiplies the money scatters up to the values mentioned above.

Next is a bunch of optional extras that cost a bit more to potentially win extra cash. One is the Feature Upgrade option when Lux Reels is triggered. Players can either collect the Lux Reels feature or pay an extra 69.85x the bet to upgrade to Super Lux Reels. Another is the Lucksome Locks feature. If 2 tree bonus scatters land, players can lock them in place and spin all other positions. The cost for this is 5 times the regular stake per spin. Also, if available, players can elect to buy the bonus outright for the cost of 116.10x the bet – the next spin lands 3 bonus symbols to trigger Super Lux Reels.

Finally, there's a gamble feature you can activate when the Super Lux Reels or Lux Reels bonus games have concluded. If selected, players spin a wheel divided into green and grey segments. Land on a green segment to move along a multiplier trail, increasing the win by up to x5. Land on grey moves you back a step on the trail, potentially losing it all.

Loki Lord of Mischief: Slot Verdict

Now we're three slots in from Lucksome, one thing is clear - you never know where the studio is going to go next in terms of theme or features. Though in saying so, they have shown a tendency to lean towards mythology and hold & win style bonus games. This brings us to Loki Lord of Mischief, which displays a different side of the studio once again. This one has an almost video game quality and feels strongly influenced by the Marvel handling of the Loki story.

There might not be any telling where Lucksome will lead players next, yet one thing they can be counted on is to lay out loads of game information, lessening the chance of stumbling into an unsuitable slot. As a further goodwill gesture, Lucksome not only states potential max win but also something called 'Win Focus' which sounds like a realistic target for players to shoot for. Thumbs up for that.

In Loki Lord of Mischief, the Win Focus is 500x, with possibilities of winning as much as +5,500 times the bet. One dream spin would be landing 5 wilds across a payline, though players are more likely to trigger Lux or Super Lux Reels for better wins during a session. Both are quite straightforward bonus games that might suit those who enjoy uncomplicated hold & win features. Having control over the volatility is always a nice touch, too.

It is a little ironic in a way since Loki is often portrayed as being all about random mischief, yet players have quite a bit of control over how Loki Lord of Mischief behaves. This is due to the host of feature buys, upgrades, and volatility choices - jurisdiction dependent, of course. Couple these with a depth of math model information, and players have a higher degree of influence than usual on how the game pans out.

With Loki Lord of Mischief, Lucksome has shown another facet of their personality. It doesn't feel like the breakout slot to put other studios on notice, but it's a playable game, totally transparent about what it does, and gives players several handy ways of influencing how the action unfolds.
