Lord Venom: Slot Overview

Lord Venom is the debut online slot from software provider Backseat Gaming. Good name, too, conjuring images of that annoying little brother or friend telling you where to move your character, what to jump, what to shoot, while they watch you play video games. Anyway, Lord Venom is released in conjunction with Hacksaw Gaming on the latter studio's Open RGS content distribution platform, so if you squint (actually, even if you don't squint), Lord Venom looks very much like a Hacksaw Gaming product. Quash those thoughts, though, as we trek through the dense bush with new studio Backseat Gaming's very first release.

Dense is a pretty good word to describe Lord Venom's set-up, as players definitely find themselves somewhere with a lot of greenery in the background. Lord Venom's got a steamy, misty, murky look about it as if set in a jungle which can get super humid and muggy at times. A mysterious snake charmer-type music plays across the airwaves, and all in all, Lord Venom lays on a pretty nice set-up to kick the game off with.

Lord Venom slot - base game

Draped in creeping vines in the middle of the screen is Lord Venom's 5-reel, 5-row gaming grid. It's got 19 paylines, triggering a payout when matching symbols land along them over successive reels from the leftmost side of the grid. Available in four RTP configurations, the highest return to player value is 96.2%, rising to 96.35% when buying the bonus round, which costs 150 times the stake. Bets can be selected from 10 p/c to $/€100 per spin, and the math model is highly volatile (5/5).

One of the nice things about Lord Venom, especially from a debut slot perspective, is that Backseat Gaming refrains from falling back on any cliched slot components. Even the pay symbols look unique, consisting of a low-pay chopped orange, grapes, avocado, and dragon fruit, then for highs, a monkey, crocodile, elephant, and tiger. Landing a 5-of-a-kind win is worth 2 times the bet for the lows and 10 to 20 times the bet for the highs. A snake (could it be Lord Venom?) is displayed on the wild symbols, which appears on all reels. Wilds replace any regular pay symbol and are worth 30x the bet if 5 wilds create a winning line.

Lord Venom: Slot Features

Lord Venom slot - free spins intro

Backseat Gaming has kept things relatively simple in terms of features. Here we find Jungle Bush mystery symbols and a Bonus feature with a rising multiplier.

Jungle Bush

When Jungle Bush symbols land, they transform to reveal one of the paying symbols. All Jungle Bush symbols in view will transform into the same type of symbol.

Bonus Feature

Landing at least 3 scatter symbols in the base game at the same time triggers the Bonus feature. When 3, 4, or 5 scatters hit, players win 12, 14, or 16 free spins. During free spins, Jungle Bush symbols may reveal Golden Egg symbols. Each revealed Golden Egg symbol will have a multiplier value of x1-x10, x25, x50, x100, or x200. Each multiplier value is added to a global Win Multiplier shown at the top of the reels. The global Win Multiplier does not reset until the feature ends. The Win Multiplier multiplies the value of all winning lines by its current value. Players win +5 free spins when 3 scatter symbols land during the feature.

Lord Venom: Slot Verdict

There you have it, fairly short and sweet but well packaged together all the same. In short, Lord Venom is a decent first effort of a slot that was neither super wow check out these guys, nor did it elicit any negative reactions either. It probably didn't hurt that Backseat Gaming had an established studio like Hacksaw Gaming in its corner, possibly helping iron out crinkles and presenting Lord Venom in a recognisable form in terms of UI and game sheet info. In fact, the gameplay, in general, with its growing win multiplier, fed by special Golden Egg symbols, feels like something Hacksaw Gaming might have created. The game seems to have drawn inspiration from external sources as well, with gameplay elements that unmistakably channel the spirit of Push Gaming's Big Bamboo slot.

Well, let's say something Hacksaw Gaming might have made back in the day before the team built its confidence and began experimenting with more intricate ways of using multipliers in a slot. In fact, playing Lord Venom for a while fostered a greater appreciation for the innovative ideas Hacksaw Gaming regularly slings out to the gambling community. Not meaning to take anything away from Lord Venom, though. For a first-time slot, Backseat Gaming hasn't really put a foot wrong. Lord Venom has a decent amount of individuality about it; the graphics are good, the sounds an ideal match, and while the gameplay ideas might be simple in some ways, they can still potentially blow up when Golden Eggs drop sizable multipliers in there. The system as a whole is good for wins of up to 15,000 times the bet, so there is plenty for prospective gamblers to play for.

Add it all up, and Lord Venom is a promising debut. It's not exactly a slot to play to experience the latest evolution of multiplier features - for now; Hacksaw Gaming remains one of the leaders in that particular area. Even though what Lord Venom has is a tad on the simplistic side by comparison, it can still put what it has to good use.

Lord Venom’s might be a bit simplistic in some ways, but every part of it has been neatly brought together to create a promising debut.
