Lost Vegas: Overview

If you’ve ever randomly wondered what Las Vegas might look like after a zombie apocalypse, then you can wonder no more. Developer Microgaming fills Sin City with a horde of the mindless brain-eaters for your slot playing enjoyment. In an unusual twist, if you aren’t in the mood to run for your life, you can take on the other side of the deal. That’s right; players can spin the game from the zombie point of view as well as from the group of survivors.

The vivid action takes place on a 5 reel slot, using 3 rows, and 243 ways to win. Fortunately for squeamish players, Microgaming has presented the zombie day of reckoning in a cartoonish, slightly humorous fashion. In saying that, the graphic standard is high, so some of the zombie stuff might be ever so slightly unsettling perhaps. It’s all in jest though, with the gore and effects adding to the undead fun.

Lost Vegas is playable from 30 p/c to £/€45 per spin, across any device. Before selecting bets, however, you must choose whether you will play as a survivor or a zombie. This does affect which features will be active, but don’t worry, you can change this setting during the base game. If you’ve seen everything one mode has to offer and wish to experience the other, switching sides can be done at any time in the base game.

Similar to the steady plod of the undead, the math model powering Lost Vegas has been locked on a medium volatility setting. Smaller, more regular wins, keep the suspense up, while solid wins are possible during features - single free spin potential can be particularly enticing. The RTP is slightly below the average figure, though if you are cool with zombies, then a rating of 95.77% shouldn’t be much of a deterrent.

Lost Vegas’ 243 win ways mean that combinations are formed of three or more adjacent matching symbols, left to right. Just as the features alternate, so do the premium symbols, depending on which mode is active. Survivors get 5 high pay humans in various poses, while zombies get the same number of undead symbols. Values for five of a kind here range from 4.17 to 8.33 times the stake. The bottom half of the paytable is made up of 10 to A royals worth 1.5 to 2 times the stake.

The task of making combinations is assisted by the logo wild which substitutes for any other symbol in the game, except the scatter. Wilds are also the most valuable symbol, where five of a kind is worth 10 times the stake.

Lost Vegas: Features

Lost Vegas comes with a few features to cover - two random pop-ups and two different rounds of free spins. The two base game bonus features may appear on any non-winning spin, regardless of which mode is active. The first is the Zombie Fist of Cash. This one is easy, quite literally, a giant green hand appears on-screen to reward players an instant cash prize.

The second is the Blackout Bonus where the reels are scanned and only premium symbols revealed. Each one on-screen awards a random cash payout. An extra benefit of this bonus is that if just one scatter symbol is in view in any position, it triggers the respective round of free spins.

If you are in Survivor mode, three or more hazard scatters on the reels trigger Survivor Free Spins. This round includes the Stash feature which removes 10-A symbols from the reels and collects them. Each symbol removed adds a cash prize to your stash. Then, any winning combinations are paid again after the symbols have been stashed. Free spins continue to roll until all low pay symbols have been collected. When this happens, the feature ends and the value of the stash prize is awarded.

During Zombie mode, three or more scatters triggers Zombie Free Spins. The main event here is the Infection feature, which is more desirable than it sounds. This feature turns wilds into stacked wilds that remain infected in this way for the duration of the round. Like its Survivor counterpart, there is no set number of Zombie Free Spins. Instead, the feature continues to play until all five reels are infected, with a set upper limit of 50 free spins. Should players make it all the way to survive 50 free spins, they receive an extra cash prize on top of any winnings.

Lost Vegas: Verdict

Technically, Lost Vegas might sound like fairly standard stuff, but the excellent aesthetics give the game some oozing x-factor, pushing it onto uncommon ground. It’s not every day you get to run from a Zombie Elvis lookalike along the Vegas Strip, and Microgaming has pulled it off in a slickly comedic style. Giving players the chance to play the game from the zombie and survivor angle is another clever twist, in a game full of them.

The features have their moments. The base game benefits from those two randoms that can appear without a moment’s notice clutching handfuls of rewards. Pushing the game to its limit during free spins is naturally what you want. At full power, Microgaming claims wins of up to 2,125 times the stake are possible. It’s too bad they couldn’t have pushed that figure out to a cool 5,000x+, but few will be complaining.

Add it all up, and Lost Vegas deals out some nicely satisfying gaming. It might not appeal to everyone; zombies rarely do. But for players after something a little darker, yet somewhat comical, why not suspend disbelief for a while to step into a world gone to ruin.
