Monopoly Grand Hotel (Shuffle Master): Review
After over 80 years as one of the most popular and timeless board game designs in the world, Monopoly is a game that is instantly familiar to most. Having become part of international popular culture and licensed in over 100 countries as well as being available in close to 40 languages, it's rare to find someone who's never, at least once, rolled the dice to send their token hopping past Go.
Needless to say, Monopoly is a game that strikes a chord with a lot of people, something the video game industry, as well as the iGaming industry, has tapped into. There have been many slot machine adaptations of Parker Brothers' highly successful board game, both land-based and online, and just recently Evolution Gaming launched Monopoly Live, an all-new special edition of the popular Dream Catcher wheel.
The very latest addition to the family of Monopoly slots, however, comes from SG Digital partners Shuffle Master and is called Monopoly Grand Hotel. This 5-reel, 50-payline slot is playable across all devices from 25 cents to 200 Euros per spin and comes with a GO feature where you can land cash rewards, access to the free spins or jackpots up to 1000x. In the Free Spins round, there's up to 240 spins up for grabs as well as a Free Parking Bonus game each time you land the required symbol.
Visually, there's nothing revolutionary about Monopoly Grand Hotel and unless you're a super fan of the series, you may even have a hard time telling some of them apart. With golden Rich Uncle Pennybags coins and banknotes in the background, along with the world-famous logo in the top left corner, there's no mistaking the brand. With a post-war feel, symbols on the reels include the usual A to J card values as well as dice, cruise ships, propeller planes, classic cars, dogs and free parking symbols. The dog and the parking symbols are the most valuable with 5 of a kind giving you 5 times your stake.
Uncle Pennybags represents the wild and replaces all standard symbols bar the house, hotel and GO. The wild appears on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 only. You'll also come across house and hotel symbols which we will get to later on. There is yet another symbol to look out for - the GO symbol which only appears on the three middle reels.
Monopoly Grand Hotel (Shuffle Master): Features
When the GO symbol appears on the three middle reels, you'll trigger the GO feature. It gives you 1 spin on the GO reel and prizes include access to the Free Spins feature, cash prizes ranging from 2x to 20x total stake as well as Mini, Minor, Major and Grand jackpots where you can win 10, 25, 100 or 1000 times your stake respectively.
The alternative way to trigger the Free Spins is by landing 6 or more hotel and/or house symbols. You'll also win the cash prizes associated with each house and hotel symbol which can be up to 25 times your stake per symbol. The number of spins you get is decided by how many houses/hotels you landed to trigger the feature - this can range from 6 to 15 free spins. During the feature, 6 or more house/hotel symbols will give you a retrigger with potential for up to 240 free spins in total.
Now, the combined value of the hotel/house symbols that activated the free spins feature will be attached to the Free Parking Bonus symbol. When it appears in view, the total you won when triggering the feature will be added to your winnings. For example, if the combined value of the houses/hotels was 40 times your stake when activating the feature, that is what you will win each time you land the Free Parking Bonus symbol.
Monopoly Grand Hotel (Shuffle Master): Verdict
We enjoy a round of the Monopoly board game as much as anyone. Unfortunately, your experience with Monopoly Grand Hotel will be limited and could end up boring you before very long. The presentation is rather basic and the gameplay lacks any sort of innovation or twist which means you're left with a slot that comes across as a bit dated. Medium variance, don't expect any explosive hits (except for the Grand jackpot of course), although there is potential to accumulate quite decent wins in the Free Spins game.
Monopoly Grand Hotel is an ok slot with decent potential that relies too heavily on its brand. If you're specifically on the lookout for a Monopoly-themed slot, Big Event is still the best version in our opinion.
Is it the equivalent of Mediterranean Avenue or Park Palace, that’s the question.
