Ocean Hunter: Slot Overview

Seriously, what's up with all the fish-based games of late? It's been a bumper season for slot anglers, with every developer and their dogfish seeming to jump on the bandwagon. iSoftBet's having a crack now, and if you're going to pick fish, you might as well pick the one sitting at the top of the food chain. At least, that seems to be the studio's thinking since they've built their online slot, Ocean Hunter, around great white sharks, or Carcharodon carcharias as they're also known. Since great whites are considered oceanic apex predators, they make an ideal candidate for iSoftBet's Apex Predator series, sharing the reels with a Wild Frenzy feature as well as up to four active game grids during its free spins bonus rounds.

While we're on apex predators, others that apparently share the title are animals such as leopard seals, sperm whales, Atlantic Torpedo Rays, orcas, and polar bears. We have to say that since there've been shark slots in the past, it might have been interesting, not to mention brave, to see a studio base a game on one of those animals instead. Then again, Atlantic Torpedo Ray Megaways sort of stumbles off the tongue, and Sperm Whale Gold might be a little risqué.

Ocean Hunter slot

Anyway, back to Ocean Hunter, and right off the bat, it's not anywhere near as impressive as Tyrant King Megaways, the initial Apex Predator slot was. The reels look a little cheap, the symbols a little blurry, though the background underwater scene isn't bad. Light filters in from above, and fish wriggle around. That's it, really - not terrible, but it doesn't feel like iSoftBet brought their A-game for this one.

Sharks would seem to be highly volatile creatures, or are we just pigeonholing them? Yes or no, Ocean Hunter is a medium volatile game, producing a theoretical return to player value of 95.99%. It's playable on tablets, mobiles, or desktop devices, and punters are able to select bets of 20 p/c to $/€20 per spin. A 5-reel, 3-row game area is where the action takes place, and there are 20 fixed paylines to land winning combinations of three or more of a mind across.

Chunky looking 10-A card royals have been used as the low pay symbols, slinging out payouts of 1-4 times the stake for five of a kind hits. Moving up to the high pays, we come across treasure, a treasure chest, a female adventuress, a male adventurer, and a shark tile, worth 5-50x the bet for five of a kind. Another shark is displayed on the wild symbol, which can replace any normal paying symbol to form winning lines.

Ocean Hunter: Slot Features

Ocean Hunter slot

The last Apex Predator slot was powered by the Megaways engine, so Ocean Hunter is very different in terms of features. Here, players need to keep an eye out for Wild Frenzies, free spins, and a couple of optional betting choices.

Wild Frenzy

At random on any spin, sharks attack the reels as part of the Wild Frenzy extra. Where sharks hit the reels, symbols are transformed into wild symbols. If sharks attack the same symbol more than once, its win multiplier increases by +1 each time, up to a maximum value of x5.

Extra Bait Bet

Activating the Extra Bait Bet puts half an extra virtual worm on the hook. In other words, the stake is increased by 50%, which, in turn, also increases the chance of triggering the Wild Frenzy.

Free Spins

Landing 3 radar bonus symbols on reels 1, 3, and 5 awards 15 free spins. Once in, four reel-sets appear on the screen for free spins, each with 20 paylines. One reel set is active when the bonus round starts, while the other three are locked. On any free spin, oxygen tank symbols may land, and are collected when they hit. When 10, 20, or 30 oxygen tanks have been collected, then reel-set 2, 3, and 4 are unlocked. Each unlocked reel-set not only adds more ways to win but turns reels 5, then 4 and 5, then 3, 4, and 5 wild on each reel-set for the remainder of free spins.

Buy Feature

As well as waiting for three scatters to hit, some players may have access to the feature buy button. If it's there, clicking it allows you to pay 100x the bet to instantly trigger free spins.

Ocean Hunter: Slot Verdict

Whilst Ocean Hunter was an okay game to playthrough, it does feel like the standard dipped between this one and Tyrant Gold Megaways. At a push, players keen on diving who can't make it to the water often enough might find Ocean Hunter something of a substitute. We were kind of grasping at straws there with the diving reference, so on a serious note, players for which quad grid arrangements are a forte might be enticed. If not, there isn't much else about Ocean Hunter to really go wild and crazy about. It looks average, comes across as an imitator rather than an innovator despite the new bits, and, doesn't feel like iSoftBet put their 10x coders on it.

Some of the more positive things about Ocean Hunter. Okay, well, the Wild Frenzy can indeed get pretty frantic, and the chance of adding wild multipliers to the reels is generally a good thing. The relatively innovative addition of wild reels in free spins has merit too. If wild reels on one grid gets you going, then slapping them on up to four grids at once might be just the ticket. Admittedly, having reels 3, 4, and 5 display a big, teeth bearing wild shark on four grid matrices at once is quite a sight. Having all three reels wild will also go a long way in helping players crack the game's potential.

All in all, Ocean Hunter was a pretty average game, though an interest in sharks might aid its allure. Perhaps with all the sharp pointy teeth and talk of apex predators, we were expecting something with a bit more bite than what Ocean Hunter delivered.

Mediocre

Ocean Hunter might not be the worst shark slot out there, but if it was a Jaws film, it’d probably be straight to DVD.
