Olympus Infinity Reels: Slot Overview
Aussie designer GamesLab teams up with fellow compatriots ReelPlay once again, licensing the latter studio's Infinity Reels engine. This time, Olympus Infinity Reels uses one of the more common themes found in slots, Ancient Greece, and follows on from the equally common Asian theme found in GamesLab's previous Infinity Reels slot, Royal Dragon. As well as a fairly unimaginative choice of theme, the features in both games are very similar as well, where you'll find Frenzy Spins, Infinity Bonuses, and free spins with a progressive symbol multiplier.
Visually, Olympus Infinity Reels shares a similar look to the one found in Royal Dragon. Not so much the subject matter, but the towering cliffs, luminous seas, and moody skies give off the same dreamy vibe as before. It looks quite unique as far as Ancient Greek slots go, so let's give the game that. The 3-reel, 4-row grid is fairly captivating, with nicely drawn symbols that have a solid, mythological quality to them. A sweepingly dramatic soundtrack reinforces the approach GamesLab has chosen to tackle Hellenic mythology. Some studios use an easy-going cartoon approach; others, like Olympus Infinity Reels, take everything very seriously.
Olympus Infinity Reels is available on any device, where stakes vary from 30 p/c to £/€120 per spin. The game is a bit of a mixed bag numerically. A highly volatile math model would tend to suit hardcore gamblers, but the game fails to back it up with solid potential – unless you are willing to lay it all on the line via a gamble feature. The RTP is a little up and down as well. The regular value hovers between 95.61% and 95.72% depending on the feature accepted (more on this below), rising to a generous 97.38% if buying free spins instead.
Casting your eye over the paytable reveals 10 regular pay symbols, split into 4 low-value gems and 6 characters such as owls, cyclops's, minotaurs, Medusa, Cerberus, plus a ram. Mighty Zeus appears on the reels as the wild, substituting for all symbols except the Lightning Bolt tile, covered next.
Olympus Infinity Reels: Slot Features
Tying in with the Infinity Reels feature is a symbol multiplier, Frenzy Spins, an Infinity Bonus, a Feature Trail, Free Spins, and a Free Spins Gamble option – yeah, there's a lot to cover.
Built using the Infinity Reels mechanic, all spins begin with 3 reels. If the rightmost reel improves a combination of at least 5 or more matching symbols, another reel is added. The new reel spins, and if it again improves the combination, the process repeats until no new winning symbols appear. Olympus Infinity Reels lives up to its name, technically speaking, as there is no limit on the number of reels that can be added.
While reels are being added as wins grow, a symbol multiplier also comes into play. It starts at x1, increasing by 1 every time a new reel is added. There is no upper limit to the win multiplier, which resets between paid spins. In addition, should 12 or more reels be added in one spin, then players pick up an additional Infinity Bonus worth 200x the bet. Symbol multipliers do not apply to the Infinity Bonus.
Also, in the base game, any spin may activate a Frenzy Spin. A Frenzy Spin applies a multiplier of x2, x3, x4, or x5 to prizes for that spin only.
The last symbol is the Lightning Bolt, and when a win occurs using this symbol, free spins with a specific feature is offered. This feature may be taken or rejected in order to play on for a better one. A 12 segment wheel spins to award normal, super, or mega free spins. How the feature part plays into this is that the Cerberus, Chimera, and Zeus features have increasing chances of landing better free spins rounds. Based on the level you are on, the segments will be as described below:
- Cerberus: 11 normal free spins + 1 super free spins segment.
- Chimera: 6 normal free spins, 5 super free spins + 1 mega free spin.
- Zeus: 6 super free spins + 6 mega free spins segments.
Normal free spins award 8 regular spins, while super free spins have at least one guaranteed wild on reel 2. Or, mega free spins have at least two guaranteed wilds on reel 2. During free spins, the symbol multiplier does not rest, and it increments by +1 to +5. Winning spins increase the increment level, and non-winning spins decrease it. Any lightning bolt win retriggers 8 extra free spins. When free spins conclude, players have the option of collecting their coins or gambling them for up to 5 times their value.
Finally, non-UK punters can buy the bonus game for the cost of 83.33x the total bet. This spins the 12 segment wheel to award normal, super, or mega free spins.
Olympus Infinity Reels: Slot Verdict
There is a feeling of having seen it all before when playing Olympus Infinity Reels, or most of it at least. The game follows Royal Dragon Infinity Reels closely, which in turn mirrored ReelPlay's Egyptian themed slot Giza Infinity Reels. From the varying symbol multiplier increments to the gamble feature, not a heck of a lot is new, if anything. Okay, the setting has shifted, but Olympus and the Greek Gods aren't exactly new kids on the iGaming block. On the whole, Olympus Infinity Reels is so lacking in genuine originality you start to wonder what the point was. Perhaps for players absolutely rapt by all things Infinity Reels it'll be a hit, yet others may question its very existence.
Gaming-wise, it's business as usual, meaning Olympus IR makes use of Infinity Reels to an acceptable level and is content to leave things there. The question of potential is an interesting one. The most you can win during the base or bonus game is 1,845x your stake, though the gamble feature opens this up to 10,000x the bet. However, since the gamble feature is limited to 5 times what was won from free spins, it's safe to say the win cap should be secure.
If you haven't caught the Infinity Reels hype train by now, Olympus Infinity Reels won't tempt you to the other side either. It doesn't offer much we haven't experienced before, making it all seem like an attractive copy and paste job.
Olympus Infinity Reel’s mediocre gameplay and run-of-the-mill presentation keep it from succeeding on any level.
