Pilgrim of Dead: Slot Overview

The abundance of 'book of' slots is pretty common knowledge, but there is also a significant number of 'of Dead' games as well. The vast majority have come off the Play'n GO production line with Book of Dead being perhaps the best-known and most beloved of the lot. Here's another to add to the growing list going by the name of Pilgrim of Dead. Like a lot of its kin, Pilgrim of Dead largely sticks to a well-used blueprint while injecting one or two tweaks to give fans something a little different to try out. In Pilgrim of Dead, that means free spins where a randomly chosen symbol expands and pays from anywhere with an unusual sticky element.

While some people have looked at cryonics to provide a possible future resurrection, for the Ancient Egyptians, death was simply a temporary event on an eternal journey. For them, when the physical body ceased to be, it wasn't the end but the beginning of the next phase of a person's voyage through immortality. There's something deeply reassuring about that viewpoint, and the culture it came from also created some of the most striking art, architecture, and literature the world has ever seen. Some of it manages to work its way into Pilgrim of Dead, which has a heavy vibe, not quite Hand of Anubis heavy, yet thick with a Pharaonic/temple/tomb atmosphere. It still retains clear visual links to Book of Dead, so fans of Play'n GO's 'book of' style should feel right at home.

Another one of the links is Pilgrim of Dead's set-up, as it's played on a 5-reel game grid, each reel holding 3 symbols and crossed with 10 fixed paylines. Players can expect a highly volatile session with a maximum theoretical return to player maxing out at 96%. Just like in the old days of Play'n GO, the provider insists on using coins to represent a lot of its values; which is either quirkily old school or kinda annoying. This means users can pick coin values and coin numbers when it comes to stake selection, with monetary values of 10 p/c to $/€100 per spin.

Along the 10 paylines, if at least two premiums or three low pays land left to right from the first reel onwards, wins are formed. For five symbol winning lines, payouts equate to 4 to 6 times the bet for the 10-A card ranks or 12.5 to 100 times the stake for the scarab, scales, Anubis statue, or Pharaoh symbols. Lower than normal, perhaps, though the sticky symbol aspect in free spins helps tip the scales back.

Pilgrim of Dead: Slot Features

Pilgrim of Dead slot - free spins with special expanding symbol

Pilgrim of Dead doesn't have a book as its wild/scatter symbol (the book was removed from Book of Dead, likely due to legal reasons), but a tomb instead. The tomb symbol lands anywhere and can replace all paying symbols to help complete winning lines – with the exception of expanding symbols. It also pays out, having the same value as the Pharaoh top premium. When 3 or more tomb scatters land, 5 free spins are awarded.

The first part of the bonus round involves a pay symbol randomly being selected to be the special expanding symbol. When the symbol is revealed, players can reject it, and another one will randomly be picked. Players must accept the second symbol; it cannot be rejected.

In free spins, when the chosen symbol lands on at least two reels if it's a high pay, or three reels if it's a low pay, it expands to cover all positions on its reel. This occurs after any regular line wins have been awarded. Expanded symbols pay all lines from any position. What's different is that the first chosen symbol to land on each reel becomes sticky. So after it has expanded and paid, it reverts to 1x1 size and is locked in position until the round ends, capable of creating another win on the next spin. Should 3 tomb scatters hit, additional spins are granted, up to 30 at the most.

Pilgrim of Dead: Slot Verdict

If anyone knows how to pull off one of these 'book of' type slots with a twist, it's the team over at Play'n GO. The studio has a good number of them stashed away under its belt already, and they don't seem keen to quit any time soon. For fans of this style of play, that's a positive thing because Play'n GO are pretty darn good at making them. Pilgrim of Dead is a prime example. It looks the business, comes from a respectable line of previous slots, and most importantly, its twist is a good one.

There is a case of checks and balances going on, however, which may not sit right with some. You can take quite a beating trying to trigger free spins, and to make sure the sticky symbols don't go too wild and crazy during the bonus, Play'n GO has reigned in the symbol values and decimated the number of initially awarded free spins. This tightens the bonus round-up, making it a tad more frantic than usual, as the race is on to get as many sticky expanders in place before the free spins run out. Retriggers are a technical possibility, of course. Being able to reject the first chosen symbol can be a blessing or a curse depending on what the second one might be. Great when it's an upgrade but you gotta laugh when turning down the King to get the Queen instead, as happened in one of the earlier triggers.

Then there's the other side of the coin. When Pilgrim of Dead is on a repeat win run, with sticky symbols in place, expanding on every spin from then on out, it can be hella fun. Add everything together, and it's time to chalk up another entertaining Play'n GO 'book of' style slot. Pilgrim of Dead is probably different enough to put off some fans as much as it excites others, but well worth investigating if this style of gameplay is of interest.

Great

Pilgrim of Dead is another well-made entry in Play’n GO’s book collection for fans looking for an intriguing twist to the regular format.
