’Let it rain yo!’ Okay, we’ll try to keep the hip-hop references to a minimum, which will be hard when testing a game like Pimped from Swedish developer Play’n GO. Pimped lets players indulge in their hip gangsta fantasies from the comfort of whatever device they choose to spin on.
Play’n GO has gone to town with the bling, the look, and of course, the sounds associated with this popular segment of society. Pimped is all about money, expensive consumer goods, rap music, and straight forward slots gaming. So you reckon you’re a real OG? Let’s find out.
As the title suggests, this diamond-encrusted slot presents an MTV version of the hip hop lifestyle. A crib, if you will, set high up on the top floor of a downtown luxury apartment block is where you’ll find the 5 reel, 3 row grid.
Stars and high rises make up the background through the floor to ceiling windows, accompanied by some banging tunes. Plenty of lux styling wraps around the lounge suite completing the scene, making it a fly pad for entertaining the crew. Pour yourself some Cristal or Grey Goose, load up a bet from 1 p/c to £/€100 per spin, and prepare to get gangsta.
Players can spin from a penny since the paylines are alterable from 1 to 10, making it an ideal choice for low rollers. Play’n GO has chosen to take the simple approach with Pimped, so players are rewarded for hitting 3 or more matching symbols on a payline. Like the actual gangsta lifestyle, the game is highly volatile – rated 10/10 by the developer.
It does mean Pimped sessions can be pretty all or nothing at times, especially since excellent single line wins are possible. Partnering with the high volatility is a rather high default RTP of 96.52%. Remember though, this is the default setting, and operators have the opportunity to lower it which is something to keep an eye out for.
Nowhere is Pimped more blinged out than on its paytable which has ten symbols, split into 5 low pays and 5 premiums. The five premiums start with a bundle of dollars rolled up in a rubber band, a chunky golden ‘P’ signet ring, a couple of girls, brother man one with a handful of cash, and a Snoop Dogg lookalike as the lead.
Low pays aren’t so interesting, but the 10-A royals are still as gaudy as you’d like, done in a gleaming ‘thug’ tattoo font. Five of a kind values across the board are quite good, ranging from 50 to 750 times the coins staked per line. The knuckle duster wild brings in even more at 1000 times the coins staked per line for five of a kind while also substituting for any other pay symbol to form a winning combo.
Like a lot of mumble rap, there isn’t a whole lot of depth to the extra features. However, their effectiveness lies in their simplicity which can shower cash money when symbols align just so. Players get two extras to contend with – free spins and a gamble feature.
The large gold dollar sign is the scatter, which might look supersized at first but is actually a 1x1 sized tile. Scatters can land anywhere and 3 in view are good for an award of 5 Win Spins. There might not be many spins, but as the name suggests, every single Win Spin is guaranteed to pay something. It won’t be lines of Snoop each time, yet players will pile up some form of reward each time.
If your luck is in, then the feature can be extended as well since each scatter that lands awards an additional 2 Win Spins up to a limit of 20 in total. You’ll know when you are playing Win Spins too because the game rains down dollar bills the whole time the feature is in motion.
The second feature, for those that like to push their luck is the optional gamble round. The objective here is to guess the colour or suit of a face-down card. Guess the right colour to double your prize, or quadruple the prize if you pick the right suit. The gamble round can be played up to five times in succession, or up to a set limit of 2,500 coins.
Like rap exploding onto the music industry, Pimped is a breath of fresh air for the slots world and one that hasn’t really been replicated since. Aside from the singular theme, the gameplay is a proven crowd favourite as well. Pimped certainly isn’t a complex slot with loads of intricate rules to absorb. This is straight forward, highly volatile gambling that may pay out big when five of a kind or Win Spins hit – preferably both at the same time.
When it comes to prizes, players spin for potential wins of up to 10,000 times the stake. Enough for the latest fully kitted out Maybach? Probably not, but that figure still makes Pimped one of Play’n GO’s higher-paying slots. So if you don’t like rap music or the scene will you still enjoy Pimped? Sure why not? The ostentatious display of wealth is all in good humour, and the high-performance math model provides some intense gaming to go with the respectable prizes.
If you like Pimped, then be sure to check out Play’n GO’s sequel That’s Rich. This modern upgrade is just as up in your grill as Pimped is, but tosses in expanding wilds to mash things up a bit more. There is also a female equivalent to Pimped titled Blinged.
