Pulped The First Cut Slot (Mini Review)

Pulped The First Cut is a fruit-themed slot from Light & Wonder that mixes expanding ways-to-win gameplay with a chef-inspired slicing mechanic and a pair of fairly traditional bonus rounds. Running on a 5x5 setup with up to 15,120 ways to win, the slot targets high-volatility players while offering a maximum payout of 5,000x the bet.

The main gameplay hook comes from the First Cut Wilds. Whenever one lands, a chef character above the reels can activate and slice nearby symbols either vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. This splitting mechanic creates additional symbol positions and increases the number of possible winning combinations on the grid. It is easily the most interesting part of the game because it gives the reels a slightly more dynamic feel than the usual static fruit-slot layouts. Watching symbols get chopped apart into extra win positions adds a bit of chaos to otherwise fairly standard gameplay.

The Jackpot Picker feature can also trigger in the base game whenever a Fruit Skewer symbol appears. Players then choose doors in an attempt to uncover matching jackpot symbols or chef's hats. Matching three jackpot symbols awards one of four fixed prizes, ranging from 10x up to 1,250x the bet. Chef's hats act as modifiers instead, adding bonuses such as jackpot multipliers or extra picking opportunities that can lead into additional jackpot reveals.

The main free spins feature is triggered by landing 3, 4, or 5 bonus symbols, awarding between 9 and 12 free spins. During the bonus, First Cut Wilds remain sticky once they land and continue activating the chef split mechanic throughout the entire feature. This creates the potential for increasingly crowded reel layouts and larger chains of connected wins as more split positions accumulate across the screen.

There is also a direct feature buy available for 100x the stake, instantly triggering free spins with either 3, 4, or 5 bonus symbols. Despite the slicing mechanic being fairly entertaining initially, the overall feature set still feels surprisingly dated. Free spins, jackpot pick bonuses, sticky wilds, and symbol splitting are all systems players have seen countless times before, and the slot never really evolves beyond those foundations.

The fruit theme also does little to elevate the experience. While the visual presentation is polished enough, it often feels like the game is relying heavily on familiar casino aesthetics rather than building any real identity of its own. The low RTP for a modern high-volatility slot does not help either, especially considering the game lacks the kind of explosive bonus potential or standout mechanics needed to justify the slower pacing.

Pulped The First Cut is not terrible by any means, but it feels strangely caught between eras. The chef slicing mechanic gives the game a small spark of originality, yet everything surrounding it feels like a throwback to older slot structures rather than a genuinely modern release. Players looking for a simple feature-driven slot may still find some enjoyment here, but there is very little that feels especially memorable once the novelty of the splitting symbols wears off.
