For many players, 2020 was Nolimit City‘s year, kicking it off with a big, brash bang. The studio blazed into the new year with Punk Rocker, a slot oozing confidence, impressive potential, and a trick bag of clever features to serve it up. Punk Rocker isn’t overly complicated, but it has intricacies that take a few spins to get a grip on. The game is more manic than confusing though, capturing the anarchic, punk ethos.
Thematically, Punk Rocker is like a trip back to the late 70s when the 100 Club Punk Festival chundered Punk onto the mainstream over two days of debauchery on London’s Oxford Street. From there, a movement which shocked the establishment quickly spread, and a common saying amongst bands of the time was ‘No future’. On the contrary, the player featured in this Punk Rocker clip has a decidedly rosier future after one highly volatile roller coaster of a bonus game.
Punk Rocker comes with two bonus games – Anarchy Free Spins and Civil War Free Spins which are triggered when 3 or 4 bonus symbols land. The difference is the first feature has three jumping wilds altering position on each spin, while the other has four. Here, off a €10 bet, three scatters land, triggering the lesser feature and it’s time to cross your fingers.
One critical element is that roaming wilds not only replace regular symbols, but trigger additional modifiers such as xWays, multipliers, increased reels, or add more jumping wilds. A train rumbles along the top of the reels, and if its doors open to reveal a modifier above a reel containing a wild, the modifier is applied. There is a taste of this on the second spin when xWays stuff a bunch of extra Einstein symbols onto the reels, though they don’t contribute to an actual win this time.
xWays do light up the game several spins later when all three jumping wilds activate modifiers on the three rightmost reels. Two ram a bunch of extra anarchy symbols onto reels 4 and 6 via xWays, while the fifth reel pulls in an x15 multiplier. As luck would have it, several anarchy symbols also land on the first three reels. Anarchy symbols might not be one of the premiums, but as the most valuable low pay, the resulting win works out at 4,500x the stake and €45,000 in the bank.
Obviously, that single spin changed everything since the rest of the round only added €120 to the total. A crazy result overall, especially when considering the high stake choice with €298 left in the balance. Such is the gameplay Punk Rocker brings to bear, merging features, potential, and insane attitude. Bundle it up, and it’s no wonder Punk Rocker is a strong contender for Bigwinboard’s game of the year. Has it done enough, or is it a little too cocky? Be sure to vote!
