Spinsane (NetEnt): Review
Admittedly, it took us a bit longer than usual to wrap our heads around Spinsane, a slot that still made little sense after we finished up this review. What's even more strange is that it comes from NetEnt, a provider otherwise known for its consistently solid productions, even if the paytables have been hit or miss in recent years. Ironically, what you get here is a game with good potential but with a production quality that makes us wonder if NetEnt has decided to go down the same route as Microgaming, allowing the world and his wife to do the work for them.
Firing up Spinsane for the first time leaves you with many questions - why are there symbols missing on the reels, what's up with the budget look and feel, and why wolves? Playable from 10 cents to 500€/£ a spin across all devices, it comes with 5 reels and 27 paylines. Playing Spinsane, you'll benefit from Super Symbols that will replace identical symbols to give you the best winning combination. There's also a Free Spins bonus where you get one wild reel on each spin.
The narrative, if there even is one, makes no sense to us whatsoever. Based on wolves, the reels appear to be set inside a laboratory of some sort with disco lights illuminating to celebrate your wins. Also, the reels have a strange curved design, possibly to mimic some sort of compression chamber, who knows. Above the reels you'll also see the pixeled silhouette of a howling wolf that starts running during the bonus, but seems to be of no practical use.
On the reels you'll see wolf claws, paws and wolf heads. You will also observe the same symbols with scratch marks on them - these are known as Super Symbols and will offer increased value. The top paying symbol, the wolf head, will give you 50 times your stake for 5 of a kind. It's Super Symbol equivalent, on the other hand, is worth 500 times your stake for 5 across a full payline. The Super Symbols can substitute for the standard symbols of the same kind to give you the highest possible winning combination. The "W" is the wild and substitutes for all symbols except for the scatter - it appears on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 only.
The symbols will never fully cover the reels as you will see. Instead, the developers have decided to include blanks for some reason.
Spinsane (NetEnt): Features
Aside from the Super Symbols feature, the only other feature is the Free Spins game which is played when you land 5 or more scatters anywhere on the reels. 1 scatter equals 2 free spins, which means you'll start with a minimum of 10 spins or a maximum of 30 should you land a full screen of scatter symbols.
During the free spins game, each scatter that appears in view will give you an extra spin. Additionally, you will always get one fully stacked wild reel on each spin to help you along the way, something NetEnt oddly refers to as an "Overlay Wild Reel" here. Either way, the max you can win on a single spin here is 500 times your stake.
Spinsane (NetEnt): Verdict
We're honestly in a state of confusion here and not really sure what to make of this. In terms of payouts, it's not bad. In fact, Spinsane has the capacity to land you wins of up to 5000 times your stake, although there's likely a snowball chance in hell for this to happen. Visually and mechanically, on the other hand, it's dreadfully boring to play and hideous to look at. Spinsane makes the worst of NetEnt games look like god given gifts in comparison.
Frankly, the only single string to hold this mess together is the winning potential. It's evident that something has gone horribly wrong here and only NetEnt themselves will ever know why. Maybe they allowed an intern to design it, or even worse, a group of casino streamers. Whatever the case, Spinsane is a limping wolf that needs to be put out of its misery.
