Super Wild Megaways (Stakelogic): Overview
Tracking down Stakelogic's original Super Wild slot proves quite the task. Enter the two words ‘Super’ and ‘Wild’ into Google and prepare to dive down a fruit rabbit hole. The two words have been used in conjunction with a ton of slots. Yet, even trolling through Stakelogic’s back catalogue didn’t help. Perhaps the game slipped through some crack in the Flash to HTML shift? Perhaps it never made the cross over online? No matter. Suffice for now to know that Super Wild Megaways is an all-out retro remake, with Megaways on board to give it a contemporary update.
Even within the Megaways category, Super Wild Megaways has a few competitors to contend with. Red Tiger has popped out a couple with mixed results. Of the two, Mystery Reels Megaways is probably the closest visually, though all three are fairly distinctive when it comes to gameplay and features. It's obvious what Stakeogic’s angle here is - Super Wild has been made to look like a physical cabinet with plain white reels, old school symbols, and a blurry background that looks like you’re in a real-life gaming hall. In other words, Stakelogic has gone for the casino in your pocket experience with this new slot which might appeal to more mature players in the right circumstances.
Megaways brings with it 6 reels with up to 7 symbols on each as well as a 1x4 extra reel on top. Win ways vary widely depending on how many symbols are on rows from 324 up to 117,649 at full power. A box at the top left of the screen displays win ways, while the top right box displays wins in a classic, digital watch font. The menu bar along the bottom also has a physical vibe and is where players select bets - depending on the operator, that might be 20 p/c - £/€20, or it could be 20 p/c up to £/€40 a spin. Every other setting is the same regardless of provider, which means an RTP of 96.07%, and a fairly high volatility rating of 4/5. Actually, there is one setting that providers have control over and that is the Bonus buy feature which will depend on market territory.
Symbols used in the game are almost all fruity icons. They do look kind of low quality, but it’s likely they have been crafted that way on purpose to fit the theme. In ascending order are cherries, lemons, oranges, pears, plums, bells, strawberries, grapes, and watermelons – a veritable fruit salad. The lucky ‘7’ is the best paying symbol and dishes out 50 times the stake for six of a kind. The gold and blue star is the wild which can substitute for any symbol except scatters.
Super Wild Megaways (Stakelogic): Features
Along with masses of reels and wins ways, Megaways brings with it a Cascade feature. This removes winning symbols from the reels to let new ones fall into the gaps. More wins are possible from the new symbol alignments, and the feature will keep cascading new symbols as long as winners are formed.
Like the original Super Wild, the crown symbol is the Scatter Mystery Symbol - 3 or more of these symbols on the reels awards Scatter Mystery Prizes. During the base game, we get:
- 3 scatters award a mystery prize of 2 – 50 coins.
- 4 scatters award a mystery prize of 4 – 100 coins.
- 5 scatters award a mystery prize of 10 – 200 coins.
- 6+ scatters award a mystery prize of 40 – 500 coins.
During the bonus game 3, 4, 5, or 6+ scatters award set values of 10, 25, 50, or 200 coins respectively.
The final symbol is the ‘SW’ which is the Scatter Free Spins symbol. When 4 or more of these symbols land they trigger the Free Spins feature, with each additional SW symbol in view awarding 5 extra free spins. The free spins feature has a win multiplier that starts at x1 and increases by +1 after each cascade. The multiplier does not reset for new spins but keeps its level. SW scatters continue to appear on the bonus reel and three or more award additional free spins to the round. The crown Scatter Mystery Symbol also appears during free spins always awards the maximum prize when 3 or more land. Not only that but the free spins multiplier is also applied to the value of the mystery symbol prize for better returns.
For those who can’t have too many opportunities for trying their luck is the Gamble feature. This simple feature appears after a win and players can double or nothing their money on the flip of a coin.
Finally, depending on provider and location, players may also get the chance to buy the feature and skip waiting for it to drop. There are 4 options:
- 5 free spins for 25x the stake.
- 8 free spins for 50x the stake.
- 10 free spins for 75x the stake.
- 12 free spins for 100x the stake.
Super Wild Megaways (Stakelogic): Verdict
What Stakelogic has gone for in terms of visuals and atmosphere works quite well. The Megaways reels looks good in the physical cabinet display and a fair amount of atmosphere is drummed up in the process. If you’re in the mood for some live-style fruit action and can’t be bothered leaving the house, it might just fit the bill. When it comes to features, Super Wild Megaways doesn’t have a huge bag of tricks but what it has works just fine and the retention of the crown symbol is a nice touch. Even the feature buy offers reasonable value compared to some of the price tags we’ve seen elsewhere.
So the setup works in its own way, how about the payoff? Well, potentially it is surprisingly high at up to 24,635 times the stake. Landing a good number of mystery symbols during the bonus round with a solid win multiplier and wins could be quite tidy. Obviously, the real magic happens during the bonus round which make that feature buy option tempting indeed.
It might have taken a Megaways license, but Stakelogic’s Super Wild slot is a pretty good game. Of course, if fruit slots drive you up the wall, there is not much it can do about that. But for a taste of the good old days it could be worth a spin as its live-type format has been done pretty well overall.
Super Wild Megaways is a virtual fruit machine, characterized most notably by its fusion of Megaways and old school gameplay.
