The Expendables New Mission Megaways: Overview
Developer Stakelogic revives everyone’s favourite mercenaries in their mouthful of a slot, The Expendables New Mission Megaways. Most of the team are back, in a game that takes cues from the third instalment in the popular action movie series, and which takes heavy visual inspiration from Grand Theft Auto V.
The first Expendables slot was well received by the gaming public, but it felt a little starchy, as though it was capable of more. Expendables New Mission isn’t a complete break from the first, but it does feel looser, less restrained, and kitted out with more features than a merc has safe houses.
One sign the game has loosened up is that the gang has swapped their all-black uniforms for civvies. Each character keeps up the steely-eyed look, so you know they’re still all business. The actual business takes place on a 6 reel Megaways grid, on license from Big Time Gaming, where 2-7 symbols appear on the individual reels providing up to 117,649 ways to win. Bets vary from 20 p/c up to £/€ 40, unless players activate the Super Stake option which doubles the cost.
Interestingly, there is no mention of whether the Super Stake affects RTP, which appears to remain constant on 96.08%. Check before playing though, as some operators may offer the game at a lower 94% setting. What’s not low is the high volatility, working hand in hand with equally high potential.
Winning symbols are made up of 3 or more matching symbols left to right from the first reel. The exception to the rule is Sly, who only needs 2 of a kind. When wins hit, a cascade feature kicks in, removing winning symbols to let new ones drop into place. In this way, consecutive runs of wins are possible on single spins, and continue to cascade until no new combinations appear.
When it comes to the symbol department, we get Terry Crews in a Panama hat, alongside Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, and Sylvester Stallone starring as the four premiums. Sly is worth by far the most at 62.5x for six of a kind - compare that to the next premium down, Jason Statham, at 12.5x for a line of six.
The remaining regular symbols are a bunch of metallic-looking, bullet-ridden low paying 9-A royals. Helping score wins are two wild symbols. The dynamite one conducts standard substitute for pay symbol duties; while the second has a multiplier we’ll at look shortly.
The Expendables New Mission Megaways: Features
There are a few similarities to the original, but on the whole, features are another area of Expendables New Mission that has been revamped. Players can look forward to Free Spins, Super Stakes, Golden Skulls, Mystery Symbols and Multiplier Wilds.
These last three are easy, when Golden Skulls appear on the reels they transform into the same matching symbol. Multiplier Wilds perform the same task as the regular wild while also adding a multiplier of x2, x3, x5, or x10 on for good measure. Combinations of Multiplier Wilds are multiplied together. Last in this set are Mystery Symbols which can transform into scatter symbols, extra wilds, matching regular symbols, or multiplier wilds.
Fans will be stoked so know their man Sly Stallone makes more of an appearance in Expendables New Mission Megaways. Every so often he randomly pops on screen to toss grenades onto the reels. Grenades function like mystery symbols, modifying a spin as described above.
From skulls to dog tags as the games scatters this time around. Having 4 dog tags in view at the end of a cascade sequence awards 12 free spins, while any extra scatters in view awards an additional 5 free spins each. Free spins begin with a win multiplier starting at x1 which may increase at random on any spin by x1 to x5 - without a set limit. You'll also benefit from an increase in rate of which Stallone appears to reward modifiers. Moreover, landing 3 or 4 scatters during the feature wins an extra 5 or 10 free spins respectively.
Stakelogic’s trademarked Super Stake feature also makes a return. The first time we ran into it was via the Ancient Egyptian slot Gods of Death. There it had two benefits, one of which was helping trigger the bonus game. In The Expendables New Mission Megaways, it’s not quite so useful, though the cost is the same – double the bet.
The benefit is randomly adding extra Golden Skulls to the reels while they spin, providing higher chances of bigger wins. Up to 222 Golden Skulls may be added, which has an average hit frequency of one in every 38 spins.
Lastly, the Stakelogic special - a gamble feature. Real simple, this can be activated after a win, provided auto-spins are disengaged, for an extra chance at winning (or losing). Players guess the correct colour or suit of a blind card for double/quadruple or nothing.
The Expendables New Mission Megaways: Verdict
Expendables fans will be happy to know the lads are back, and bigger than ever. Like most branded slots, Expendable New Mission Megaways will appeal more to enthusiasts, but the new features and better graphics will help broaden its appeal. The changes aren’t revolutionary, but there is a lot more action going on this time around making New Mission a better use of the brand.
For one it just looks nicer, for another, Sly makes more of an appearance in the game, adding more personality. The first time he popped up, we hadn’t fully absorbed the paytable, and he lobbed a grenade onto the reels which turned into what looked like a handbag. There were chuckles all round before the bag became an x5 multiplier ending up in a tidy return. From there it was kind of game on, racking up more entertainment miles than the first Expendables slot.
What hopefully hasn’t changed is the impressive potential of over 20,000x which the first one was capable of. No doubt New Mission packs a solid potential, though there is no official word at the time of writing. Alongside big potential, the math model feels like it’s had an overhaul too. Trying to trigger free spins when playing The Expendables part one could be quite a painful experience. While it’s not a walk in the park, features were more frequent here, better pace, more fun, and the result felt more like how a branded slot should.
Stakelogic’s first Expendables slot proved to be somewhat popular with punters, and with the new enhancements, there is no reason to suspect New Mission won’t be even bigger. Stakelogic has stepped up the explosions; it’s livelier, there’s more character involvement, so an overall enjoyable game.
Stakelogic steps up the action in The Expendables New Mission Megaways that easily eclipses the original by packing in more explosions, better features, and a higher fun factor.
