The Great Albini (Foxium): Introduction
Ok, so news of new Foxium slots is not something that make our mouths water, and you should most definitely not believe the hype that affiliate sites out there are trying to sell to you. The truth is that, up until now at least, the games have all been mediocre at best and some actually downright vile. With so many outstanding developers flexing their might and with tons of great games on offer, there's really no reason to play bad slots.
Having partnered up with Microgaming in 2017, this Estonian/Swedish provider creates exclusive content for the Quickfire platform. Despite claims of having a decade of "gaming experience", the catalogue of this studio is rather sad. These guys certainly have a knack for visual design, and it's even likely that they have a long history of creating great mobile games or whatever, but from what we've seen so far, they appear more like hired programmers rather than casino enthusiasts.
Going through our list of providers in search for content to review, we soon realised there wasn't much to choose from. Due to the bon vivant nature of the iGaming industry and most employees probably still recovering from new years eve, the choice fell on Foxium and their magician themed slot The Great Albini. One of the first things we did was to Google this Albini guy, for background research y'know, but turns out it's a fictional character. Like all great magicians he's got his own sidekick, Lily - a fair lady with pink hair and big...talents.
Anyways, on to the technical aspects. The Great Albini is a 5-reel, 3-row slot with 25 paylines that extends to 6 rows and 50 paylines in the bonus. Playable on all devices from between 0.25 to 30 EUR, here you will benefit from the Mystery Box Respin feature and a bonus game with multipliers. The RTP follows industry standard and sits comfortably at 96.6%.
The story takes place in the 1920s - the golden era of illusionists and stunt performers, out of which Harry Houdini, noted for his sensational escape acts, is most likely the best known. The actual game, however, is played on a stage with Albini himself seen standing to the left of the reel set, frantically waving his magic wand from time to time. Visually, it looks ok, for the lack of a better word, although it's nothing that will make your eyes pop out of your sockets. Except when Lily shows up possibly.
The Great Albini (Foxium): Symbols, Paytable & Features
Looking at the paytable we find 10 standard symbols in addition to the wild (which only appears on reels 2 to 5) and the special Mystery Box symbol. Don't expect much from the basic A, K, Q, J and 10 card suit symbols - it is the premiums you're looking to land. These are represented by Lucky Cups, Knives, Canary Birds, Lily the sidekick and the Great Albini himself who's the top ranking fellow, giving you 40 times your stake for 5 across a payline.
There's a Mystery Box Respin included in the base game that activates when a full stack of Boxes lands on the middle reel. These are then held in place while the rest of the reels spin again. Now, any additional Mystery Boxes landing anywhere on the reels during the respin will also remain sticky while the respin counter is set back to 3 again. The feature continues until either no new boxes land on the reels or the player runs out of respins. Once the respin feature is completed, the boxes are replaced with a random symbol, thus substantially increasing your chances of big wins. Land a full screen top symbol here to win 1000 times your stake.
The Great Albini (Foxium): Free Spins
The main attraction of this magical performance is the free spins game and to enter it you will either need to land the 3x3 free spin symbol on the 3 middle reels or use the buy-in feature. Triggering the bonus organically will award 12 free spins whilst buying it will give you 8, 10 or 12 free spins at the cost of 100x, 125x or 150x your stake respectively.
Here you will benefit from an extended reel set play on a 5x6 grid with 5o paylines. Furthermore, the Lily Feature may come into play at any time to give you a full stack of x2 multiplier wilds on reels 2, 3 or 4 with a random number of respins. With lady luck on your side, or Lily rather, players can land wins of up to 4000x in total.
The Great Albini (Foxium): Conclusion
The Great Albini is undoubtedly one of the better games produced by Foxium and we really don't have much to complain about. The base game does tend to get a bit tedious at times, even with the addition of the Mystery Box feature, but the bonus makes up for it, keeping players on their toes as it's capable of delivering quite massive wins.
It's not a game we see ourselves returning to repeatedly, especially with the endless of options on the virtual shelves, but could be worthy of a few spins for those who enjoy trying new slots. It's a volatile game, however, so don't be surprised if it swallows your balance like a seagull gulping a sausage.
