The Sword and The Grail (Play'n GO): Overview
With two to three scheduled releases per month, peaking with four new games in May 2019 alone, the Play'n GO production rate is unparalleled in the industry. In terms of consistency, most games have been surprisingly well built in spite of the large quantity, although there have been a few bumps in the road, of course. Contact is one such example, a grid-slot with cascading symbols that seemed exciting when showcased during the London iGaming conference, but turned out to be a serving of mediocrity once released.
One game that shows more promise is The Sword and The Grail. For this release, Play'n GO has decided to go with a traditional setup of 5 reels and 3 rows where winning combinations can be formed on one or more of the 20 fixed paylines. Don't let the old-school setup have you fooled, for this Arthurian-inspired slot is capable of delivering huge wins with the help of its Holy Grail wilds which can boost your wins with multipliers up to 100x in the main game. There's also emphasis on the multiplier wilds in the progressive free spins round where up to 10,000 times your stake can be won. You can play The Sword and The Grail across all devices from only 10 cents up to 100€ per spin.
The Sword and the Grail is visually pleasing with excellent artwork and high attention to detail. With a majestic medieval castle looming in the backdrop, symbols on the reels include lower value A, K, Q, J and T symbols represented by a selection of coins. More rewarding are the character symbols with images of Merlin the enchanter, Lancelot the knight, and Lady Guinevere. Most rewarding is King Arthur himself giving you 25 times your stake for 5 of a kind. The legendary Holy Grail is the wild, it replaces all symbols except the scatter and will give you 50 times your stake if you land a wild line.
The Sword and The Grail (Play'n GO): Features
Aside from performing its regular substituting duties, the Holy Grail wild is also capable of boosting your wins with Wild Multipliers of 2x, 5x, 10x or a whopping 100x, which can result in substantial wins in the main game.
It gets more interesting when you land 3 or more Excalibur sword scatter symbols anywhere in view on the same spin. Starting with 5 Free Spins, the objective is to collect scatter symbols to progress through the 4 levels. At level 1, your wild multiplier is set to 2x and increases as you advance through the stages. The levels are as follows:
- Level 2 - collecting 6 Excalibur scatters will give you 5+ free spins and a multiplier wild of 5x.
- Level 3 - collecting another 5 Excalibur scatters will give you 5+ free spins and a multiplier of 10x.
- Level 4 - collecting 7 more Excalibur scatters will give you 5+ free spins and a multiplier of 100x.
In total, you can win up to 20 free spins with a maximum payout of 10,000 times your stake in the free spins round.
The Sword and The Grail (Play'n GO): Verdict
The Sword and The Grail is a highly volatile slot with some similarities to NextGen Gaming's classic hit 300 Shields. While the potential in The Sword and The Grail is double that of the usual high variance offerings from Play'n GO, it's not quite as explosive as what's on offer in 300 Shields. On the other hand, The Sword and The Grail offers more balanced action with a chance to land huge wins even in the main game, which makes it less of an all or nothing slot compared to the unforgiving beast that is 300 Shields.
This is a great release from Play'n GO that will appeal to most, if not all, fans of high volatility. The production is of excellent quality, the progressive free spins round unceasingly intense, and knowing you could hit big on any spin is incentive enough to stick to this game. Just a word of warning - though it's not as insanely volatile as some other slots we've seen, the mathematical design can be borderline merciless nonetheless. Proceed with caution.
