The Wiz - Introduction
Sourcery is on offer in this fantasy-themed ELK Studios creation that is played on a 5-reel, 4-row reel set with 178 ways to win. It's a rather simple slot that, although being far from innovative, still delivers an element of surprise. Furthermore, the features included in the game have all been tried and tested for years and are usually enjoyed by players when done right. However, there are some downsides to it that we will get to in our conclusion.
Playable on all devices from between 0.20 to 100 EUR, The Wiz benefits from a bonus game with enhanced reels as well as special wilds. The 96.1% RTP follows the industry standard, and regarding variance, it sits somewhere in the upper medium range of the volatility scale.
A medieval kingdom is the setting for The Wiz. In the background, a majestic castle towers into the blue skies and, riding his dragon, the wizard himself is seen standing on a hilltop trail looking out over the verdant mountain valley. It's a nice wallpaper-like backdrop, although we do feel that the lack of dynamics is a bit lazy maybe.
The Wiz - Symbols, Paytable & Features
There's quite a leap in value between the top low-value symbol and the lowest high-paying symbol, a jump from 0.5x to 3x. On the reels you'll find 4 low-paying symbols represented by various magical objects - spoons full of magic dust, keys, brooches and rings.
On the premium side of the paytable you'll see glass jars of magic potion, golden moons, chests and sun symbols, the latter being the most valuable one giving you 10 times the stake for 5 across a payline. All symbols appear fully stacked on the reels in both the main game and the bonus.
In the main game, players can also benefit from multiplier wilds ranging from x2 to x5. If more than one appears on a winning payline, they will combine to form more substantial wins.
The Wiz - Bonus
Two Wizard scatter symbols appearing anywhere on the reels will award 1 Wizspin bonus spin. Land 3, 4 or 5, however, will award 5, 7 or 10 Wizspins respectively. It's also possible to re-trigger the bonus game by landing 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 scatters, adding 1, 2, 5, 7 or 10 extra free spins respectively to your total.
In the bonus, players will benefit from enhanced reels where all low-value symbols are replaced by their respective high-value symbol accordingly:
- Spoon -> Potion
- Key -> Chest
- Brooch -> Moon
- Ring -> Sun
What is more, the multiplier Dragon wild now also turns into a walking wild, moving leftwards one reel for every spin until falling out of view. With most of the potential allocated to the bonus, it's undoubtedly the main attraction of the game as there is a maximum payout of 5000 times your stake here.
The Wiz - Conclusion
The Wiz is quite a mediocre and simplistic slot lacking innovation and ambition. In fact, it's rather uninspiring and bland compared to many of the other games produced by this company. It's not a horrible slot by any means and the potential is quite alright, though we do struggle to understand why anyone would choose to limit a 4-row reel set to 178 paylines. In our opinion, at least, it's a bit of an oxymoron. Furthermore, the base game is tedious and could really need a kick in the behind.
On the positive, the bonus frequency being relatively high, you won't have to wait too long for it to save you from the boredom of the base game. All in all, The Wiz is an ok slot but doesn't really reach all the way in spite of its great potential.
