Tomb of Gold: Slot Overview
Imagine preparing a lavish tomb for your body's final resting place, filling it with elaborate artwork and high-value items, spending a fortune to have everything set up just so for posterity. Then, 5,000 years later, troops of somnambulist tourists tramp through your private space, gawking at the things you treasured in life, taking pictures they can flaunt on social media. This thought pattern was kicked off when reviewing Tomb of Gold by developer Play'n GO. If there is one software provider who has shown immense love for this part of the world, it's PnG, and this particular slot fills its tomb with a Lock'n Gold feature and free spins bolstered by a rising multiplier.
After so many Ancient Egypt releases, you'd hope a designer would be able to craft superlative examples of this type of game. Tomb of Gold is evidence that Play'n GO does indeed have the skills and know-how to construct a lush Ancient Egyptian slot. From a sultry soundtrack, which evoked thoughts of languorous Cairo days, soaking up the sun and antiquity, to the detailed background with its myriad animations and visual effects. In other words, fans of this form have the chance to dip themselves in highly stylish surroundings.
Between the burning braziers is Tomb of Gold's gaming grid. For the most part, it comes equipped with 6 reels, 4 rows, and 4,096 ways to win, but it does expand by one extra row when the Lock'n Gold round triggers. With a 7 out of 10 rating, Tomb of Gold is a medium-high volatile slot, and of its handful of RTP configurations, 96.29% is the default return value. As for bet levels, the lowest stake available is 10 c while the highest is $/€100.
Since there are no paylines, winning symbols may land in any row, just as long as matching symbols hit on at least 3 adjacent reels from the leftmost reel as their starting point. Card ranks 10 to A are the low pays, where 6 matching symbols pay 1-1.4x the bet while hitting 6 of the Ankh, scarab, cat, or face high pay symbols is worth 3-5 times the bet. Wilds assist in creating wins by substituting for any regular paying symbol. Wilds hit on all reels, and a 6 wild winning way pays 6 times the bet.
Tomb of Gold: Slot Features
Tomb of Gold divides its feature into two – a Lock'n Gold streak respin style bonus round and a free spins feature, which benefits from a rising win multiplier.
Lock'n Gold
Landing 6 Coin symbols triggers the Lock'n Gold feature. However, if 4 or 5 Coins land, then a second chance sort of feature activates. For it, the triggering Coins remain while the reels with no Coins on them spin for the chance to land the required 6 Coins. For the Lock'n Gold feature, the triggering Coins move up and unlock the top row. The reels are cleared of symbols, and 3 respins are awarded. Only Coins or blank spaces may land during the feature. Coins stick when they hit and reset the respin counter back to 3. When the feature ends by running out of spins or filling the reels, each Coin flips to reveal a bet multiplier value of x1 to x100. The multipliers are added up, and the total value is awarded.
Free Spins
Landing 3 Sphinx scatter symbols trigger the free spins round. If 4, 5, or 6 Sphinx scatters trigger the feature, a cash prize of 5x, 10x, or 20x the bet is awarded, as well as the free spins. The next thing to happen is a wheel spins to award 10 to 30 free spins with a starting multiplier of x1 to x5. During the free spins feature, landing a Sphinx scatter increases the free spins by +1, and each wild that lands increases the multiplier by +1. The cap on free spins is 65. No cap on the multiplier was mentioned.
Tomb of Gold: Slot Verdict
Tomb of Gold was a slot that dazzled at the first look but slowly faded in interest as time drifted by. Not to drastic levels where repugnant hate was the overriding emotion or anything, but after clocking how vanilla the two bonus rounds were, Tomb of Gold lost some of its initial spark. As stated, Tomb of Gold is a looker, and it sounds nice, too, so Ancient Egyptian enthusiasts get to lap sweet audiovisuals up for a bit. A deep affection for the theme may help in overlooking the humdrum nature of the bonus features, too.
One positive thing about the features is they seemed to trigger quite often. The second chance helped here, at times turning a less than 6 Coin hit into a Lock'n Gold entry. The Lock'n Gold, yeah, it's pretty plain. All there is to do is keep landing Coins till the respins evaporate or the positions are filled. It was a bit odd not seeing Coin values until they flip over to reveal their prizes when the feature had finished. Till then, you're just staring at fancy placeholders. Kinda fun when they do the reveal, though, like opening a bunch of anonymous gifts to find out what they contain. The free spins feature didn't trigger nearly as often as the Lock'n Gold. Not sure why, since it came across as about as entertaining as the hold 'n win feature. Free spins with a multiplier that increases when wilds hit, okay, not bad, not great, but arguably where players are most likely to be able to achieve Tomb of Gold's 7,000x the bet max win.
Despite the uninspiring extras, for those with a soft spot for the theme, Tomb of Gold should have an appeal. It won't hurt if the fairly stock features are acceptable to any potential participants because Play'n GO has brought them to life in an attractive example of Ancient Egyptian gaming.
Fair
Tomb of Gold’s features are old news, but the highly polished packaging helps the game gleam.
