Tomb of Nefertiti (Nolimit City): Overview
Yet again players are immersed in an ancient Egyptian theme while they spin reels for treasure. Tomb of Nefertiti, looks thoroughly modern, with a physical slot vibe, big bright symbols, and one very familiar looking character. Okay, let's get this out in the open, the lady on the wild symbol looks exactly like Lara Croft from Tomb Raider. Whether the owners of that franchise are aware of the resemblance and will let it go remains to be seen. Let's fire up the game and see what it can do, while we can.
Apparently, the Tomb of Nefertiti was a real thing. It was located in a side chamber in the larger Akhenaten complex when it was unearthed. It's said that Nefertiti was a real looker, the most beautiful in all of Egypt. Being the Queen, people kind of had to say though that for fear of insulting someone who had the power over life and death.
Nolimit City has captured the spirit of her beauty in Tomb of Nefertiti, which is also a bit of a looker. The background is clear, moody, and the game has an outdoor location instead of being set in a dingy temple or tomb. The symbols also burst with colour. The 9 - A low pay symbols have a nice Egyptian touch, while the high pay symbols are classics of the era such as pots, cats, scarabs, Anubis, and Horus. All symbols pay out when at least three of a kind land on a payline. Horus is the most valuable base game symbol at 25 times the stake for five of a kind. As mentioned, the Lara Croft–esque raider is the game's wild and has multiple attributes as you will see.
Stakes can be placed from 20 c/p up to £/€100 to spin the games 5x3 grid. Lining the reels are numbers indicating the 20 paylines which add further emphasis to the physical slot feel. Paylines expand during the Raider Spins feature which we will see shortly. Like the looks, RTP is above average on 96.19% and has been coupled with medium to high volatility. So far it sounds like any other modern ancient Egyptian slot. However, Nolimit City has added few original features that inject a healthy dose of originality.
Tomb of Nefertiti (Nolimit City): Features
When a winning combination lands, the tiles involved in the win Re-Spin and more combos are possible. Wilds and bonus symbols remain Sticky through all re-spins. Re-spins are limited to two in the main game and come with multipliers of x2 and x3 respectively.
One of the random features is the Wild Raider which can appear at any time. When it does, the middle three reels are highlighted, and up to 9 wilds can drop onto these tiles. Another random extra is Nefertiti's Curse. When this one drops, all tiles on the middle three reels synchronise with the same symbol which can be anything except the bonus symbol.
The Nefertiti bonus symbol can appear on any reel. Land 3 of them to trigger 10 Raider Spins. During this round, paylines are doubled from 20 to 40, and the Wild Raider feature is present on each Raider Spin, providing at least 1-9 wilds every time. Not only that, but the re-spins feature mentioned above has no limit and continues to re-spin as long as winners continue to land. There is technically no limit to how high the multiplier can go.
Tomb of Nefertiti (Nolimit City): Verdict
Any 5-reel Egyptian themed slot runs the risk of drowning in a sea of similar slots. Nolimit City has managed to avoid mediocrity by tweaking the extras to provide a fresh slot experience. Tomb of Nefertiti shows that just a few additions can avoid complete anonymity. And they don't have to be huge changes either. The tweaks that Nolimit City has introduced are subtle, but save Tomb of Nefertiti from being an all-out clone. That's not to say that Tomb of Nefertiti has revolutionised the genre in any way, but fans of the theme will generally be intrigued by the gameplay on offer.
Nolimit City further cements the playability by giving the game a decent top payout as well. Get the features working to their full potential, and the game is capable of wins of up to 3,768 times the stake. What might frustrate people though is the game's volatility and symbol values. With its medium to high setting, you do get a steady rain of wins and feature drops, but they tend to be on the low side. Symbols offer okay value - but only if five of a kind land, anything less and the values drop off steeply. And after a solid test run, five of a kind was a rare occurrence indeed.
Tomb of Nefertiti is more likely to appeal to the casual set. Those looking for an intense game will find it lacking. That’s a shame and it feels like a missed opportunity. As it is, it's quite entertaining, and what Nolimit City has done with the extra features is interesting. However, hardcore players will be put off by its limp math model and win mechanic.
