Tyrant's Fall: Slot Overview

The Roman Empire lasted over a thousand years, from 27 BC when Octavian took charge until the fall of Constantinople in 1453, and thanks to online slots, it might well last another thousand years, virtually speaking. Adding fuel to the fire is developer Slotmill and its online slot Tyrant's Fall. Not only has Slotmill been inspired by one of the most infamous world civilisations in all of known history, but it appears to have taken one or two cues from the equally infamous (in online gambling circles) 300 Shields slots from Nextgen/Light & Wonder. As well as reliving a brutal chapter of the past, players get an equally brutal slot where levelling up Roaming Multiplier Wilds with values of up to x150 are the name of the game.

If looks are any guide, then Tyrant's Fall isn't one to mess around. With its background done in dark tones, Tyrant's Fall depicts a scene where it seems something violent has just taken place or is about to. The Roman character in the game looks about as tyrannical as it gets, a little psychopathic even, as if getting the order to obliterate a captured enemy village or to decimate his own legion would be an absolute delight for him. In other words, he isn't someone who messes around, and neither, once it kicks into life, is Tyrant's Fall.

One reason is that the volatility in Tyrant's Fall is rated 'very high', while producing a default RTP of 96.03% when betting 20 c to $/€60 per spin. Activating the Xtra-Bet increases the stake by 50%, increasing the chance of triggering free spins by 2.4 times and having an RTP of 96.34%. For the most part, this is a straightforward, uncomplicated game, and the same goes for the setup where 20 bet lines pass across a 5-reel, 3-row grid. Winning combinations are formed on paylines, starting from the leftmost reel onwards, hitting across adjacent reels.

As the lower value pay symbols, Tyrant's Fall has Jack through Ace card royals, then shackles, a bag of coins, a bloody blade, a bloody wreath, and that psychotic-looking warrior chap. Hitting a full line of matching royals awards 3.5 to 6 times the bet, whereas 5 identical highs in a line pay 14 to 40 times the bet. A 5 wild winning line is also worth 40x the stake.

Tyrant's Fall: Slot Features

What you want to see in Tyrant's Fall is its Multiplier Wild symbols, which appear in the base game and roam about the board in free spins. Bonus features may be bought from the Fast Track, and Slotmill's no mucking around Burst Mode is available, too.

Multiplier Wild

The Multiplier Wild symbol can appear on any spin with values of x2, x5, x10, x30, or x150. The Multiplier Wild symbol appears, then moves to a random reel position. It can substitute for regular paying symbols as part of a win, and when it does so, it multiplies the win by its multiplier value.

Free Spins Bonus

The free spins bonus is triggered by landing at least 3 scatters on a single spin. Triggering the feature with 3, 4, or 5 scatters starts the bonus collection at 3, 4, or 5, respectively. Players start with 5 free spins and an x2 Roaming Multiplier Wild. The Roaming Multiplier Wild moves to a new position before each new free spin. Landing 3 or more scatters on a spin awards +5 extra free spins at the current stage. To unlock stages goes like this:

  • Stage 2 - collect 6 scatter symbols in total to gain +5 free spins with an x5 Roaming Multiplier Wild.
  • Stage 3 - collect 9 scatter symbols in total to gain +5 free spins with an x10 Roaming Multiplier Wild.
  • Stage 4 - collect 13 scatter symbols in total to gain +5 free spins with an x30 Roaming Multiplier Wild.
  • Stage 5 - collect 17 scatter symbols in total to gain +5 free spins with an x150 Roaming Multiplier Wild.

Each unlocked stage begins when the previous one ends. Landing a single Bonus Maximus symbol during free spins upgrades the round to the super free spins bonus.

Super Free Spins

This feature is triggered by upgrading free spins or by landing 2 or more scatters plus 1 super bonus scatter (the Bonus Maximus) on a single base game spin. In the super free spins bonus, 2 Roaming Multiplier Wilds are present for the duration of the round.

Fast Track & Burst Mode

Players can gain direct access to Tyrant's Fall's features from the base game using the feature buy options. From here, you can get the Super Bonus Hunt (RTP 96.21%), which costs 5x the bet, where every bonus triggered will be the super bonus or free spins for 100x (RTP 96.27%) or super free spins for 300x the bet (RTP 96.32%). Burst Mode is available in Tyrant's Fall, as well, which is a super fast way of playing the game, removing most of the front-end graphics.

Tyrant's Fall: Slot Verdict

From the burning hint of violent deeds to the blood and the murderous look in the main character's eye, Tyrant's Fall makes clear this is not a slot to be trifled with. It is, however, an ideal fit for gamblers who fell for the charms of 300 Shields, 300 Shields Extreme, and later on, 300 Shields Mighty Ways. Tyrant's Fall isn't a straight copy, but it pays a certain homage to these slots of the past, building on them while doing things the earlier games did not, in a similar manner to the way the Romans borrowed bits of Ancient Greek culture then forged their own conquering path through history.

One of the notable upgrades in Tyrant's Fall is the roaming nature of its Multiplier Wilds. It won't always roam where you want it to, of course, but a Roaming Multiplier Wild is guaranteed to be on the screen somewhere for the full duration of a bonus round. Two Roaming Multiplier Wilds, if you are lucky enough to trigger the super free spins round, or buy it. However, just cos there's at least one Roaming Multiplier Wild in view at all times doesn't mean it's going to go where you want it to or link up with a massive number of matching symbols. But that's part of the fun and challenge, as is collecting scatter symbols to level the bonus round up. Tyrant's Fall might not get to x300, yet its x150 is good for helping draw out wins of up to 10,000x the stake.

Naturally, Tyrant's Fall should appeal to players who liked the 300 Shields slots, which were in themselves renowned for being brutal, if potentially rewarding, games. And hey, the good news is, if you like the look of this game but find the action a little too much on the rough side, Slotmill has done Tyrant's Fall as part of a double release, with plans to drop a 'softer' version titled Emperor's Rise not long after this one.

Drawing inspiration from the market’s most dynamic Roman-themed slots, Slotmill’s Tyrant’s Fall beautifully pays homage to their legacy in a single, well-crafted game.
