It's a more unusual idea than most of the mechanics appearing in new cluster slots, although the crowded presentation doesn't always make the action particularly easy to follow.
Clusters of at least 5 matching symbols produce wins, with those symbols disappearing and new ones cascading into the empty spaces. Every position involved in a winning cluster is then covered by a Cursed Mark for the remainder of the cascade sequence. These marks don't do anything immediately, but they effectively create a record of where successful symbols have previously landed.
The payoff comes through Vatica's Grasp. If a Vatica symbol appears while Cursed Marks are active, both Vatica and every marked position transform into the same randomly selected paying symbol. With enough marks scattered across the 6x5 grid, this can suddenly turn a fragmented board into a large connected cluster and potentially start another sequence of cascades. It's a clever mechanic, although its effectiveness naturally depends on Vatica arriving while there are enough useful marked positions available.
Relics of Eternity develops the concept further by allowing Cursed Marks to persist between free spins until Vatica's Grasp eventually claims them. The number of initial free spins is determined by the number of triggering Scatters, while landing another 3 Scatters adds an extra spin. Judgement of the Underworld is the more powerful version, where Vatica's Grasp can transform marked positions only into Wilds, Wild Multipliers or Extra Free Spin symbols rather than ordinary paying symbols.
There are several enhanced betting options as well. BonusHunt FeatureSpins cost 3x the normal stake and increase the chance of reaching a bonus, while the much more expensive 50x Oracles FeatureSpins guarantee both a win and at least one Vatica symbol. The mechanic, however, is also dependent on Vatica appearing at the right time, so promising collections of Cursed Marks won't always amount to much. Vatica: Voice of Lost Souls has more originality than many recent Cluster Pays releases and deserves credit for that, but awkward visual presentation and the reliance on its trigger symbol prevent a good central concept from becoming a truly standout game.
