Viking Wilds (Iron Dog Studio): Review
Upon receiving a request directly from Iron Dog Studio a few months ago, asking us to review an upcoming video slot of theirs, we brushed it aside, disregarding it as just another generic video slot developed by some obscure provider. We quickly came to the conclusion that it would generate little interest on our site, and with limited time and resources on our hands (unlike most other sites we do not hire content writers to do the job) we felt compelled to focus on products of a more mainstream nature.
On Bigwinboard, we carry out tests day in and day out and as gambling enthusiasts with an insatiable passion for slots, evolution has fine-tuned our senses to identify the shiny nuggets. Most of the time it's something obvious, such as a splash screen screaming big win potential, but in other cases a subtle distinction may entice us to further explore it. Viking Wilds is one such game it turns out.
In this Norse-themed slot hosted by the stunning winged warrior Valkyrie and the equally dazzling Viking Berzerker, you'll journey through wintry isles and snow-capped mountains in a quest to open the gates of Valhalla where you'll be invited to play a free spins bonus with increasing multipliers and expanding win ways. Available across all devices from between 0.20€ to 50€ per spin, Vikings Wild is played on a 5-reel, 1024 win ways reel set which can offer up to 3125 ways by random expansions of the reels.
Set against a wintry landscape, on the reels you'll come across Viking style A to J royals as well as axes, shields, helmets and hammers. The premium symbol set is represented by three banners out of which the red one is the most lucrative, giving you 5 times your stake if you land 5 of a kind.
Viking Wilds (Iron Dog Studio): Features
Viking Wilds is designed around a cascading game engine, here referred to as tumbling reels. Winning combinations trigger an avalanche mechanism - winning symbols are removed and replaced as new ones tumble in to replace them, repeating until no more winning combinations appear.
There's also some extra focus on wilds here. Aside from the standard wild you'll also benefit from a sticky wild that only appears on the middle reel. In contrast to the standard wild, the sticky wild is not removed following a tumble win. Instead, it drops one position on the reel. There's also an expanding wild appearing on all but the first reel. As the name suggests, it expands to cover the full reel.
The Valhalla free spins bonus is activated by landing all three wilds in one series of symbol drops and will set you off with 12 free spins along with a starting multiplier of x1. Now, if one or more of the reels are expanded on the triggering spin you'll get an even better start:
- 1 expanded reel: 14 free spins with a x2 multiplier
- 3 expanded reels: 16 free spins with a x3 multiplier
- 5 expanded reels: 18 free spins with a x4 multiplier
In the free spins you'll benefit from incremental multipliers and expanding win ways. As a result of landing an expanding wild or by triggering the expanding reels feature, the multiplier meter will increase by 1 and the win ways expand. Added multipliers and win ways persist throughout the bonus.
Viking Wilds (Iron Dog Studio): Verdict
Though not a bad game by any means, Viking Wilds is not a slot that will win Iron Dog Studio any awards. The narrative is hollow, the features are nothing out of the extraordinary and the visual design is rather plain. With that said, there are still some qualities to it that shine through. The playability is excellent and the game runs smoothly without any annoying hiccups. Furthermore, the 96% RTP is where it should be and the 6000x max win potential alone is worth giving it a spin or two.
Viking Wilds won't be the big breakthough Iron Dog Studio is hoping for, but it's undoubtedly of good enough quality to establish the company as a serious competitor. First, however, the slot needs to prove itself in a live environment. Is the potential really there or is it all talk. That remains to be seen.
