Well of Wilds Megaways: Slot Overview
There are certain types of games that, before they’ve had a chance to strut their stuff, have already been savagely prejudged and need to work hard to make it back to neutral. One type walking a dangerous line are Irish themed slots – simply because there are so many of them, and they tend to be a cultural train wreck of clichés. So it was with a huff of jaded resignation that we fired up Red Tiger slot Well of Wilds Megaways for a Celtic blast. It didn’t help that Red Tiger already has similar sounding game titled Golden Leprechaun Megaways in their line-up. However, life is full of unlooked-for happy surprises, which is what Well of Wilds Megaways turned out to be.
The first positive impression was made by Red Tiger’s handling of the theme. Unusually for this slot genre, Well of Wilds Megaways is quite unassuming, where a 6-reel Megaways grid floats upon the surface of a calm pond, full of lucky coins and multi leaved clovers. There are obvious Irish references via symbols on the reels, but when Well of Wilds Megaways loads, you don’t feel like you’ve been head-butted in the face by a leprechaun, then painted green and rolled through the hills of Ireland while Celtic sprites play cláirseacha and down flagons of Guinness. Thus an unexpected level of intrigue was raised over what other surprises might be in store.
Hitting the spin button reveals a different number of symbols on each reel, from 2 to 7, altering the number of Megaways in play from 64 up to 117,649. Wins trigger a cascade feature in all phases of the game, removing winning symbols for the chance to link additional combos together with the new symbols that drop in. Any device is suitable to play Well of Wilds Megaways, providing stakes from 10 p/c to £/€10 per spin. Beneath the surface, the game’s math model generates a theoretical return value of exactly 96%, in a highly volatile environment.
Moving on to pay symbols, we find 10-A card royals, followed by 4 luck-based icons. These are a ladybug on a four-leaf clover, a horseshoe, a bag of something, and a rabbit’s foot – landing a six of a kind combination triggers a payout worth 1 to 3 times your stake. Lucky Coins may land on any of the four middle reels during the base game, and in this phase of play, they act as a regular wild, standing in for any pay symbol.
Well of Wilds Megaways: Slot Features
Triggering Lucky Spins is Well of Wilds Megaways’ ultimate aim, while the side feature is a Well of Wilds modifier. At any point in the main game, the Well of Wilds symbol may appear on one of the middle four reels. When it does, 2 random symbol types on these reels are turned wild for the following cascades.
Landing at least 3 Lucky Spin scatter symbols awards the Lucky Spins round. The first 3 scatters award 9 free spins, and each additional scatter brings an extra 3, up to 18 at most. All wins during Lucky Spins increase a win multiplier by +1 up to a maximum of x40. During Lucky Spins, any symbol types turned wild stay that way for the rest of the feature.
Also, Lucky Coins are collected whenever they land on a Lucky Spin. Collecting 5 of them triggers the Lucky Wishes feature. Out from a well may pop either 3-6 extra spins, double the current win multiplier, or Well of Wilds. The Well of Wilds can turn up to 3 symbols into wilds for the bonus round, with up to 2 in a single activation.
Well of Wilds Megaways: Slot Verdict
Red Tiger has managed to design an Irish themed slot that may very well entertain players not super into the Emerald Island subject matter. Some Irish slots literally shower players in Leprechauns at every turn while stuffing every cliché onto the reels as inhumanly possible. There is no confusion as to Well of Wilds’ personality, but it’s not so showy, look at me. Instead, it is completely comfortable in its own skin, not needing to express itself to everyone within earshot. Red Tiger has turned the theme down to craft a rare entry in the genre – a relatively subtle Irish slot.
What’s even better is the gameplay is good too. Megaways performs to its usual standard during the base game via consecutive cascading wins and the occasional extra wild on the reels from the Well of Wishes feature. The real magic arrives when Lucky Spins trigger. Here’s when the Celtic influences are more apparent as a jolly tune kicks in, the clovers are bathed in a mystical purple light, and Lucky Spins take over. The coin collector turned out to be a lot more exciting than initially suspected. From it, additional free spins stretched the round, as symbols turned wild, and the Double Multiplier caused the odd adrenal spike.
The features are quite simple, but they tie in perfectly with the muted use of the theme to create a nicely balanced package. No element crowds out the other; everything works like Irish zen, if there is such a thing. If not, maybe there should be. Anyway, zen would go out the window should you hit Well of Wilds Megaways’ max win, a well respectable total of 10,500x the stake.
It probably helped that we approached Well of Wilds Megaways with a cynical mind-set, yet it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It won’t shake the iGaming world to its foundations, but it does offer a nicely balanced Megaways experience. If Well of Wilds Megaways had been more over the top, Rainbow Riches style, our reaction probably wouldn’t have been as positive, but big green hats off to Red Tiger for showing a more classy side of Irish culture.
