Well of Wishes (Red Tiger): Overview
Well of Wishes is an Irish-themed slot delivered by Red Tiger partners and in-house developers R7 - or "development lab" as Red Tiger themselves have referred to them as. Not that we've spent much time researching them, other than trying various search combinations on Google, but R7 appears to be a rather shy studio with little info about them. Although we're intrigued to learn more, what really matters is that, unlike so many other of these independent partnering studios in the industry, R7 has delivered a consistent stream of decent games. The first one, for example, Devil's Number, was quite a bold first release with an original theme and entertaining features. Undoubtedly, they made a great first impression.
Well of Wishes is the second release from R7 and one where the studio has decided to play it a bit safer when it comes to the theme. Visiting the land of the leprechauns, this slot is built using a standard format of 5 reels, 3 rows and 10 paylines. A bit disappointingly, the RTP is slightly lower than industry standard, coming in at 95.66%. Whether that is a deal-breaker or not cannot be said without some long-term perspective, but like all of us who enjoy playing Novomatic machines know, if a game is entertaining enough, we're ready to accept it. Either way, just like Devil's Number, this game comes with a symbol transformation feature, but rather than just upgrading symbols to one of higher value this one will turn them directly into wilds. Allowing you to adjust your stake from between 0.10 and €/£20, you can play this game across all devices, including mobiles and tablets.
As you would expect, the design here is dominated by the typical luck of the Irish colour palette, meaning lots of pink and green. Visually, there are some weak spots, such as the rather dull wallpaper-like backdrop that looks like it could have been taken straight from aunt May's gardening website. The reel area, encased in gold and with a faintly Celtic feel, is much more pleasing on the eye, thankfully. When it comes to symbols, it stays true to the Irish genre as well. Aside from the classic collection of card suit symbols, you'll also see more rewarding clovers, horseshoes, moneybags, and rabbit feet - the latter being the most lucrative, giving you 30 times your stake for five on a full payline.
Well of Wishes (Red Tiger): Features
In the base game, Lucky Coins may land on any spin. These will act as wild symbols, and each of them will also be collected and added to a progress bar that you'll see above the reel area. When 5 coins have been collected, they are tossed down the Well of Wishes which in return will reveal a random symbol (of those currently in view) to be transformed into wilds (for that spin). The well may also grant you a second symbol to be transformed into wilds which seems to happen with a frequency of around 1 in 10-15 times.
Well of Wishes is all about the Free Spins. It comes into play when 3 or more Lucky Spins symbols land in view anywhere on the reels. If fewer than 3 land on a spin, the scatter symbols will lock in place for the next spin, giving you a second chance to trigger the bonus.
Starting with 10 free spins, the Lucky Coins feature applies here as well but with the added benefit of any symbol transformed into wild will remain as such throughout the round. Moreover, any coins collected in the base game will be carried over to the bonus where five of them will grant you extra spins. Some symbols, such as the rabbit feet, for example, appear stacked which means that if transformed, you could be playing with fully stacked wild reels. If you manage to transform all symbols into wilds during your round, you can look forward to 300 times your stake wins on each spin that's left to play. During simulation, the game has paid out a maximum win of 5499.9x.
Well of Wishes (Red Tiger): Verdict
Overall, Well of Wishes is another good release from R7. The audiovisual presentation may not be the most exciting, but it doesn't suffer as bad from that generic ambience many other slots do in this particular category. The collection feature adds some flavour to a base game that is otherwise rather bland, although the free spins round, which can be quite challenging to trigger due to the relatively low frequency, is the main course that allows this dish pass approval.
Coming from an independent studio, Well of Wishes is significantly better than much of the drivel established providers will often churn out. The visuals are, for the most part, of acceptable quality, the soundtrack fits the game well and, more importantly, it's got great potential.
