Wilhelm Tell (Yggdrasil): Overview

Though known as little more than just a bedtime story for most of us, the legend of Wilhelm Tell actually has quite a profound meaning. A folk hero of Switzerland and an excellent crossbow marksman, the legend has it that Wilhelm assassinated a tyrannical ruler that encouraged the people to open rebellion, eventually marking the very foundation of the Swiss Confederacy. So what's up with the kid and the apple? Well, having refused to bow to the tyranny, Tell was consequently sentenced to death for his defiance, as was his son. However, Tell was told he could redeem their lives by shooting an apple off the head of his kid Walter in just one try, which he did.

Based on the famous Swiss legend comes this 5-reel, 20-payline slot from Swedish provider Yggdrasil Gaming. It's relatively simple in gameplay and only involves two features - Stacked Wild Reels that can nudge into position and a Free Spins bonus with 3 games to choose from, one offering a multiplier of up to 50x. Wilhelm Tell comes shipped with a relatively high RTP of 97.0% which is always appreciated and can be played on any device from between 0.10 to 50€ per spin, making it a suitable slot for all gambling budgets.

Set in a summery mountain valley, in the backdrop you'll see green hills, snow-capped mountains and a sleepy village. What immediately stands out with great effect, however, is the background music. The waltz soundtrack includes two tracks, a relaxed version that plays when you leave the game on idle and a more intense waltz that plays when you spin the reels. The sound effects, on the other hand, have been recycled from the old Yggdrasil database and will be recognisable to most who have played their games.

The reels are dominated by 4 low-value card suit symbols - hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades. The high paying symbols are represented by various characters - the knight's guard, Wilhelm Tell himself and his nemesis, Gessler, the evil tyrant. It is Gessler that is the most rewarding out of the standard symbols, giving you 7.5 times your stake for 5 on a full payline.

The wild symbol is represented by Wilhelm's son Walter, illustrated by an image of him tied to a tree with an apple on his head as we know him from literature. Walter is actually the leading character in Yggdrasil's interpretation of the legend. Not only is he the wild, but he also appears fully stacked on the reels as well. Furthermore, the wild comes with a nudge feature which means it will nudge to cover the full reel if a winning combination is guaranteed. It's possible to land a full-screen wilds this way which will give you 150 times your stake in the base game. Where you really want to do it, however, is in the free spins, which leads us to the next chapter in the legend of Wilhelm Tell.

Wilhelm Tell (Yggdrasil): Features

Free spins feature

With minimal potential in the base game, Wilhelm Tell is all about the Free Spins bonus which you are granted access to when you land 3 or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. We always appreciate slots that give something extra for landing all 5 scatters. If you do so in this game, you'll pocket the scatter jackpot of 500 times your total stake. Anyway, once having activated the free spins, you'll be faced with 3 options:

  • Play the bonus with 10 free spins and a multiplier of x5 (750 times your stake per spin).
  • Play the bonus with 5 free spins and a multiplier of x10 (1500 times your stake per spin).
  • Play the bonus with 1 free spin and a multiplier of x50 (7500 times your stake per spin).

You cannot retrigger the bonus so make good use of that single free spin if you choose to opt for the x50 multiplier option. Extremely volatile as this option may be, it can potentially lead to wins of up to 7500 times your stake, although as you should understand, it's extremely unlikely ever to happen.

Wilhelm Tell (Yggdrasil): Verdict

Wilhelm Tell is a hit or miss in the literal sense of the word. With little potential in the base game, it's a waiting game to gain access to the free spins. To us, the 5 free spins option seemed like the most sensible choice as you get some playtime along with a reasonable chance of landing some decent wins. The 1 free spins option is really only for the more adventurous gambler or those who have an adequate balance.

Production-wise, there's nothing negative to say though we're not overly impressed either. While Yggdrasil slots are generally of very high quality when it comes to design, there's often something slightly off with the gameplay that is hard to pinpoint. It could just be that we haven't had much luck playing their games, and judging by the big wins shared on social media, others don't seem to be very lucky either.

Overall, Wilhelm Tell is a decent slot that is more or less saved by its high potential, giving it the necessary kick needed to keep you from nodding off from the rhythmic beat of the waltz.

Good

Wilhelm Tell is a fairly good slot that hits close to the mark.
