Wings of Riches (NetEnt): Overview
While conducting research for this review, we came across quite a few fairy themed slots. It appears that there is a relatively small, yet lively, market out there for this sort of thing. Huge, epic, mythology-themed slots are obviously popular, but it appears that there is also demand for the lighter side of the fantasy genre as well. NetEnt is the latest developer to don wings and flutter into the fray with this new slot Wings of Riches. The subjects here are fairies, bugs and plant life - and that sentence will either produce a flush of excitement or, make your blood curdle. There is little middle ground when it comes to Wings of Riches.
As you would expect from NetEnt, the graphics are good, and the setting bursts with life and colour. The overall effect is like a magical mid-summer strawberry about to pop and shower players with glitter. The transparent reels have been shrunken down and placed at fairy height amidst towering blades of grass. Played on a 5-reel, 3-row reel set with 20 fixed paylines, stake choices are wide with bets starting at 20 c/p or raised as phenomenally high as £/€400 per spin. Info on volatility was unavailable at the time of writing, but the game plays and feels like a medium variance slot. This, in combination with an RTP of 96.5%, wins are generally of the frequent yet low value variety. The technical settings match the game’s light atmosphere and subject to a tee.
Along with the verdant green background come a host of colourful symbols which are all tailor made to fit the theme. In the lower side, we get three different flowers, while the mid-table is made up of three different bugs. The high pay symbols are all, you guessed it, fairies - a purple, green, gold, and pink one. With the last fairy worth up to 75 times the stake for five of a kind.
Wings of Riches (NetEnt): Features
Wings of Riches contains a couple of extra features to help improve the win rate that are also deeply influenced by the theme. The image on the wild symbol, for example, is a couple of dandelion flowers. Yes we did just write that. You might remember picking and blowing on them as a kid to watch the seeds fly off with the wind. Appearing on the three central reels only, the Dandelion Wilds have a similar effect in the base game because when they land, they spread and turn 2 - 4 nearby symbols into wilds as well.
The purple dragonfly is the scatter and when 3 or more land during the base game they trigger 10 Free Spins. During free spins (which uses a different set of reels), a multiplier symbol comes into play. It appears on the 5th reel and looks like an ascending ladder of dropping flower bulbs. Each time the multiplier symbol lands, it increases the win multiplier by 1x, up to a maximum of 5x. The multiplier symbol is removed when the 5x multiplier is reached and all remaining spins will benefit from a 5x multiplier boost.
The bonus round can be extended further by landing more scatter symbols. If 2 Scatters land, then 5 more free spins are added to the remaining total. If 3 Scatters land then the total increases by 10 additional free spins.
Wings of Riches (NetEnt): Verdict
Sometimes in life we come across things that are so polarising that we either love them or hate them. We can now add Wings of Riches to that list - and that’s fine. It's, after all, what makes us interesting as humans with our weird and wonderful tastes. Wings of Riches finds itself firmly in that category - players will either love it or hate it. If you're the type of player that enjoy playing games like Butterfly Staxx 2 and Wild Pixies, it's likely you will be able to get something out of this one as well.
If, on the other hand, the theme isn’t to your taste, you will struggle to find a single reason to play Wings of Riches. For most parts, the payouts are low, the visuals are ok but far from spectacular, and the mathematical model just doesn't bring much excitement. The key to winning big is to get the 5x multiplier, but even then the max win in a single spin will be around 400x. Add a few re-triggers to that and it can probably deliver some ok wins.
For the sake of an unbiased review, even when we put the theme aside and view the game through the cold steel of detached objectivity, Wings of Riches fails to excite. Casual players who like to dabble in the lighter side of fantasy can buckle in and prepare to have their hair blown back. But, those looking for a high volatility, high potential beast of a slot just aren’t going to find it in a garden full of fairies and flowers this time.
Wings of Riches is interesting beginning, but the gameplay quickly wears thin.
