Arthur’s Fortune Slot: Overview
Swedish developers Yggdrasil Gaming have decided to go all mythical in their latest slot Arthur’s Fortune. Instead of conjuring up Thor and the lads, they have shifted their focus to the British isles and the Arthurian Legends. Originally dubbed Camelot Gold, the slot received a last-minute name change, and that choice is just one of many inspired decisions that went into making the game. The rest revolve around excellent features, whose simplistic nature in theory bely how effective they are in practice. The graphics and sound have been done in typical Yggdrasil style to a high standard, and bring the Middle Ages to life on the reels in all its romanticised glory.
If you play Arthur’s Fortune on a mobile phone the screen is taken up almost completely by the reels. On a desktop or larger device, players are treated to view of a green landscape, with mythical Camelot sitting triumphantly on a hill overlooking the scene. The soundtrack is suitably theatrical; in fact, if you ever used to play the first Battlefield 1942 game, it sounds a lot like the load screen music. The background might be pretty complex, but the game area is not. Made up of 5 reels, 3 rows, and 20 paylines, the setup is straight forward gaming. Perfect for low rollers, bets can be set as low as 4 p/c per spin or changed to a maximum value of £/€100. Pick a bet, spin manually or on auto and that’s all there is to it.
Simplicity goes for the rules, which require combinations of three or more matching symbols on a payline for a reward. Yggdrasil has done a nice job with the symbols too, which come in two types – low and high pays. A ‘Ye Olde England’ font has been used to draw the 10-A royals to start the table off. These are followed by high pay character symbols. There is a turquoise knight, a blue knight with an epic mustache, a green night who might be Lancelot, Guinevere, and last but not least King Arthur. Five of the Arthur's worth 25 times the stake, with the rest of the crew not bad either. There is a wild which substitutes for the pay symbols and is worth 27.5 times the stake for 5 of a kind. It also doubles as the scatter which we will look at below.
First though, a few facts and figures, starting with the all-important RTP which comes in at a solid 96.2%. Volatility, meanwhile, is quite high but not brutal with a hit rate of 22.17% and the free spins frequency clocks in at once per 130 spins on average. Not bad numbers at all.
Arthur’s Fortune Slot: Features
So far so, straight forward, but Arthur’s Fortune can pull out some real surprises via its features. First, a Wild Transformation feature can come into play at any moment during the base game and turn up to 10 symbols wild for that spin. When that happens, a wheel spins above the reels, and whatever symbols it lands on are converted into wilds.
Wild transformation come to a head during Free Spins which are triggered by the wild/scatter symbol (or via the Orb symbol as explained further below) - 3, 4, or 5 scatters anywhere in view will award free spins and starting wild conversions accordingly:
- 3 scatters - 7 free spins and 1 symbol to wild conversion.
- 4 scatters - 10 free spins and 2 symbol to wild conversions.
- 5 scatters - 14 free spins and 3 symbol to wild conversions.
All symbol to wild conversions last for the full duration of the bonus feature. Scatters are also part of the bonus game and landing 2 or more adds more free spins and converts more symbols like so:
- 2 scatters: +1 free spin and 1 additional symbol to wild conversion.
- 3 scatters: +2 free spin and 2 additional symbol to wild conversions.
- 4 scatters: +3 free spin and 3 additional symbol to wild conversions.
- 5 scatters: +4 free spin and 4 additional symbol to wild conversions.
Sounds basic on paper maybe, but it’s worth checking out because it can go off the chart when a bunch off wilds are in action. On a further note, the game also contains an Merlin's Orb Bonus symbol. This symbol appears at random during the base game or free spins, and one in view is enough for a reward. In the base game, the orb can contain an instant prize of up to 25 times the stake or 7-14 free spins, with 1-3 symbols wild. If it appears during free spins, it can contain a cash prize of 50x, or 1-14 additional free spins.
Arthur’s Fortune Slot: Verdict
Arthur’s Fortune is one of those solidly built games, simple, but one in which every aspect has been expertly put together. This being Yggdrasil, the game is pleasant to the senses, but its elegance goes deeper than that. Each aspect complements the other and works together to climax in an epic bonus game when firing on all cylinders.
It doesn't always work your way, of course. Arthur's Fortune dishes up a fair number of dead spins when he’s not in the mood and bonus games are not guaranteed to be wild fests. But, when he is feeling benevolent, the game literally goes medieval, in a Marsellus Wallace meaning of the word. Sitting back and enjoying the last few spins of the bonus round with a bunch of wild transformations in play (as seen in the video) is quite the experience.
Another good thing is that Arthur’s Fortune isn’t one of those slots that hypes up a feature like a wild conversion and then plonks one or two symbols on the fifth reel. Instead, the reels can end up showered in wilds, and when a load of symbols have been converted, wins rack up on practically each free spin. Arthur’s Fortune might not possess the highest potential around, but maxing out at 7,510 times the stake means not too many squires will be complaining.
All of these details add up to an excellently constructed slot that covers the basics well while holding back something special for the features. It does it all in an unpretentious way that players looking for a straight forward slot with plenty of sting in its tail will appreciate. If you need a break from cascading features or endless reel options and want a rock-solid slot with an epic bonus game, Arthur’s Fortune is a fine choice.
Arthur’s Fortune might be short on features and rather basic, but is one of the best slots to come from Yggdrasil Gaming in quite a while.
