Big Bad Wolf Megaways: Slot Overview

If you've been playing slots for any length of time, there's a good chance you've put Quickspin's Big Bad Wolf timeless classic through its paces. Released in 2013, Big Bad Wolf was an early breakout hit, going on to become one of Quickspin's highest-performing slots and picking up several awards along the way. Since then, players have been treated to a Christmas Special and now have a Megaways version to contend with. Quickspin has kept much that made the original so popular, but the conversion has resulted in a much larger game in all respects.

Graphically, there has been an improvement as well, the visual representation of country living looking more refined than before. The game progresses through several locations, where the base game takes place in the first little piggy's house of straw. The grid has grown from the 5x3 sized action area of the original to one made up of 6 reels + a horizontal bonus reel. All of the characters are back, and the symbols look familiar, giving Big Bad Wolf Megaways a strong connection to the original, while the high definition graphic upgrades make the experience extra idyllic.

Playable from 20 p/c to £/€100 per spin, stats and maths have received an even greater shakeup than the outer shell of the game. The default RTP on the first was rather high, so that has taken a drop, though still well within the realms of acceptability at 96.05%. There are lower versions available as well, so make sure to check the paytable before you hit spin. As expected, volatility is now high, as is potential, increased to an exceptional degree at 30,540x.

Hit the spin button, and 2-7 symbols land on the main reels plus 4 on the upper reel, producing up to 117,649 ways to win. Quickspin has made a few revisions to the pay symbols as well. The main change is the wolf is now the highest value pay symbol instead of the scatter, joined by the three pigs, a trowel, an axe, and pitchfork as the mid pays - the red pig is the most lucrative, giving you 6 times the stake for a full line. Lows remain the weatherboard designed J-A card symbols worth 0.10 - 0.50x for six of a kind. Toolboxes are displayed on the regular wild, landing on reels 2-4 to replace any paying symbol. This wild is joined by Piggy Wilds, mentioned next.

Big Bad Wolf Megaways: Slot Features

Big Bad Wolf Megaways uses more or less the same features as the original, with Quickspin tuning them to make the most of what Megaways gives. They've also added a progressive multiplier to the Blowing Down the House Bonus Game and bolted on a feature buy where permitted.

It all starts with tumbles, previously called Swooping Reels, which blow winning combinations from the reels like a gust of wind. This allows remaining symbols to tumble into the gaps - repeat wins may occur from a single spin, ending when no new combination hits.

Tumbles also feed into the Piggy Wild feature, formerly known as Pigs Turn Wild. How this one works is every second tumble in a sequence turns one of the premium pig symbols wild. Like regular wilds, these Piggy Wilds only land on reels 2-4. Piggy Wilds revert back to regular pays on new spins.

Triggering the Blowing Down the House Bonus Game occurs when 3 Moon Bonus Scatters land in the base game, awarding 11 free spins. During this bonus, a win multiplier is added to the game, starting on x1, increasing by +1 following every win.

It doesn't end there, as collecting Moon Bonus Scatters will see the multiplier increase as followed;

  • Collecting 3 scatters awards +3 spins and increases the multiplier by +5.
  • Collecting 6 scatters awards another +3 spins and increases the multiplier by +10.
  • Finally, 6+ scatters awards +1 spin for each scatter collected.

One more extra for good measure is the bonus buy feature. By paying 90x the bet, players can buy entry into Blow the House Down Bonus Game. Buying the bonus improves the RTP by 0.39%.

Big Bad Wolf Megaways: Slot Verdict

It sometimes seems like every 'iconic' slot has either had a Megaways makeover or is poised to do so, yet some make more sense than others. It's not quite a revolution, but Big Bad Wolf switches to Megaways as smoothly as you like. It helps that the original already used a tumble mechanism, so there was a natural progression to the larger Megaways format. Like Gonzo's Quest, Big Bad Wolf was practically born to function this way. The changes might not seem significant at first, yet Quickspin has enlarged the game in every way, keeping the Big Bad Wolf experience alive and kicking.

Some may level criticism that this is simply a bigger version of Big Bad Wolf, and while there is some truth to that, each bit is just so much bigger. Everything that charmed and entertained about the first is still here, such as the cinematic cut scenes or the lively wolf blowing down houses; there's just a whole lot more of it to enjoy. The base game benefits from the extra reels, rows, and ways, plus the Piggy Wild Upgrade can be extremely useful in connecting the occasional massive win across the grid. Even more so in free spins, when the win multiplier drops in. It might not be the height of Megaways creativity to just bung on a progressive win multiplier for free spins, but there's no doubting its effectiveness, fitting nicely with Wild Upgrades and Moon Bonus Scatter feature to create some fun, fairy tale gaming.

While some experienced gamblers with a soft spot for Big Bad Wolf will have been tempted back for old time sakes, newer players might have found the original a little outdated. It's still a charmer, yet its low potential can't compete with what modern releases have to offer. This charge certainly cannot be levelled at the Megaways version, Quickspin opening up the floodgates where wins as high as 30,000 times the stake are now possible.

As mentioned, Big Bad Wolf Megaways isn't exactly a paradigm shift, but it is a perfect example of an older game making a seamless transition to the Megaways platform. Quickspin has done a great job of stepping up the magic of the original to a larger stage as if it was meant to be.
