Blazin' Bullfrog: Slot Overview
For such humble wee critters, frogs are certainly not underrepresented in the iGaming space. Partly due to their charming looks, partly to their connection with Asian culture, where they are perceived as symbols of fortune and luck, they habitually pop up to brighten a slot. Bullfrogs are not quite as numerous, being more aggressive than their cute green siblings. They get their name from the bull-like bellowing sound they make during the breeding season. Bullfrogs might secrete poison from glands located behind their ears, yet they still manage to end up on the dinner, their legs do at least.
It is this misunderstood creature Play'n GO has chosen to star in their slot Blazin' Bullfrog. In an unforeseen plot twist, Blazin' Bullfrog is an attempt to follow on from Fire Toad, yet aside from flaming frogs and toads, the two games bear few similarities. Blazin' Bullfrog is a toned-down slot that offers little to attract the discerning gambler. Let's not get too judgemental before a full dissection, but the initial response was 'filler' after a preliminary glance, and it never really recovered from there.
Played over a 5-reel, 3-row game panel, putting up 243 ways to win, Blazin' Bullfrog has an old school look, kind of plain, with just a fiery red background to contrast the gold-lined grid and copious amounts of jewels. It doesn't come across as related to Fire Toad at all. Instead, the tenuous link seems like it was used as the minutest justification for Blazin' Bullfrog's existence. Players who liked the volcanic world Play'n GO created for Fire Toad will be bored by Blazin' Bullfrog's design. There's mention of Blazin' Bullfrog being the Fire Toad's retirement, and if so, then the poor chap needs a hobby.
Playable on smartphones, tablets, and full-blown desktop devices, Blazin' Bullfrog allows stakes to be selected from 10 p/c to $/€100 a spin. Play'n GO has dropped the volatility to a medium setting (5 out of 10), while the default RTP is 96.20%, though it can be found lower depending on operator configurations. Everything has been pulled back for Blazin' Bullfrog, not just the math model. This means fewer features, less excitement, and ultimately, less potential as well.
Six regular symbols make up the paytable, split between 4 gems on the lower side of the table and 2 high pay symbols. These are BARs and 7s, the two of them worth 1.5-3 times the stake when a five of a combination hits. The other two symbols used in Blazin' Bullfrog are a scatter and a wild, which are sort of the same thing as you will see in the next section.
Blazin' Bullfrog: Slot Features
Players looking for a cutting edge Play'n GO slot will not find it in Blazin' Bullfrog. The game comes with one simple feature, revolving around wild respins along the lines of the iconic Starburst.
Golden bullfrog scatter symbols appear on the middle three reels, and landing them triggers the Blazin' Respins feature. The triggering scatter transforms into a stack of wild symbols, covering all tiles on its respective reel.
A respin is then awarded, where the wild stack is locked in place. If another scatter lands, it also turns that second reel wild, and another respin is awarded. On this respin, two stacked wild reels will be available. The best-case scenario is to have all three middle reels covered in wild symbols, in conjunction with premiums on the outer two.
Blazin' Bullfrog: Slot Verdict
Maybe some will go for the simplistic, frog and jewels mash-up Blazin' Bullfrog presents, but even then, the game is unlikely to have much of a shelf life. There is nothing noteworthy to rave about, and really, Blazin' Bullfrog seems out of place in the Play'n GO line-up. There are similarities to Crystal Sun – Play'n GO's answer to Starburst, though on a lesser scale. Usually, if the team designs a simple game, there'll be an interesting theme or imagery colouring the screen or a feature with at least a trace of originality about it. Blazin' Bullfrog is empty of anything like that, raising more question marks than interest.
Big win vehicle this is not, and while respins with middle reels stacked in wilds have their moments, they are limited. At full blast, Blazin' Bullfrog is capable of wins as high as 1,215 times the bet, which fair enough would be a pretty exciting respins sequence. Compared to what others are doing, including Play'n GO themselves, it's nothing special, though.
It feels like Play'n GO might've missed a deadline on this one and had to quickly ship something out the door to keep up. It's hard to see who it might appeal to. With the widespread use of frogs in Asian themed slots, you might go in expecting some sort of Caishen experience, though it's not at all. It's not really a fruit slot either, despite the presence of sevens and bars. Blazin' Bullfrog winds up being a disconcerted heap of disparate elements that function, just.
In Short
All of Blazin’ Bullfrog’s components are average at best, lacking any one outstanding feature or notable aspect.
