Bookie of Odds (Triple Edge Studios): Review

With the Cheltenham Festival fast approaching and the Grand National on the horizon, Microgaming partners Triple Edge Studios have made sure you'll have a binary thoroughbred of your own to cheer on. However, it was NetEnt that first called dibs on the great British sporting event when publicly announcing the release of its branded slot Scudamore's Super Stakes earlier in the year. To NetEnt's annoyance (we have to assume), Microgaming more or less hijacked the whole thing by ordering their subordinates to pick a slot from their catalogue to clone, re-skin and release one day before their competitors NetEnt. Business strategy at its finest.

Bookie of Odds is a straight up clone of Book of Oz, a game that actually turned out to be Triple Edge Studio's best work to date. It has the same 5-reel, 10-payline setup, the same 96.31% RTP and the identical features that include paid respins in the base game and expanding symbols in the bonus a lá Book of Ra. Just like before, you can play this horse-themed slot from 0.10 to 25 Eur per spin across all devices.

Mechanically and mathematically identical to Book of Oz, all that's changed is the appearance. Visually, it's colorful and quite soothing on the eyes we have to admit. It's not a very sophisticated design, however. For example, the abstract-style background is nothing but a simple wallpaper that conveniently stays the same throughout the whole game, even in the bonus. To be fair, simplicity is one of the core factors of Book of Ra, so we'll let this one slide.

On the reels you'll see A, K, Q, J and 10 royals as well as 3 jockeys - red, purple and blue in colour. The explorer symbol, or Rich Wilde if you will, is represented by a Bookie guy and is the most rewarding - 5 of him on a payline will give you 500 times your stake. As in most other slots in the category, the book is a combined scatter and wild, replacing all other symbols.

The game comes with a paid Respins feature. Underneath each reel you'll see a Respin button along with the price for each respin. Based on a mathematical formula, the price will, of course, vary depending on what symbols you currently see on the reels. For example, chasing a third scatter will, of course, be more expensive and trying to land 5 bookie symbols on a full payline even more so.

Keep an eye out for the book symbol - 3, 4 or 5 of them anywhere on the reels will give you 2, 20 or 200 times your stake as well as allowing you entrance to the free spins bonus with 10, 12 or 25 free spins. Just like the classic book slots, it can retrigger quite generously and there is no limit to how many times it can retrigger. Before the bonus is played, one of the standard symbols is randomly chosen as the special expanding symbol. When it lands on the reels (3 required for low-value symbols and 2 for premiums), the symbol expands to become fully stacked.

Bookie of Odds (Triple Edge Studios): Verdict

Book of Oz is undoubtedly a great slot and naturally, being a clone, so is Bookie of Odds. The lack of originality, however, makes it a rather pointless release, unless you're a great horse racing enthusiast that also happens to be into online slots.

For players who were around when Book of Oz came out, there's really nothing new to explore or discover here. Bookie of Odds only really feels like a hasty re-skin, released with the sole purpose of cashing in on the horse racing hype NetEnt promoted over the past few weeks. How do you rate a clone? Not A for effort, that's for sure.
