Scudamore’s Super Stakes (NetEnt): Introduction
NetEnt's portfolio of branded slots is a hit or miss affair. While there are a few decent ones, such as the recently released Vikings slot, most have been rather disappointing. Visually, most NetEnt productions are on point. In fact, they're some of the best designed and most sophisticated casino games you'll ever come across. Mathematically, however, titles such as Jumanji, Planet of the Apes and Emoji Planet have all been rather weak.
Seeking to further expand its portfolio of branded slots the company has partnered with eight-time Champion Jockey Peter Scudamore to produce its first sports branded slot. Utilising Scudamore's image rights, the game includes real racing content as well as themed in-game features. Exciting news for horse racing enthusiasts and fans of equestrian performance sports, although the rest of us are probably just hoping for a good game with a chance to land some decent wins.
In Scudamore’s Super Stakes you're invited to a day at the race tracks where you'll get to experience the buzz of horse racing from the comfort of your home. Playable from 0.10 to 100 Eur per spin across all media devices, this 5-reel, 20-payline NetEnt slot comes loaded with random wilds and two headlining features - the Bet Slip feature where you'll play with a bet multiplier and Peter's Classic Cup feature which is played on a dedicated reel set with a chance to win up to 5000x.
Let's be honest, Scudamore’s Super Stakes is not the visually most appealing slot to come out of the NetEnt production line. With that said, it's far from terrible mind you and some may even love it. It's just that, knowing exactly what the designers of this company are capable of, it's only natural to hold them to a higher standard.
As you may expect, green is the principal colour here with a horse racing track serving as the backdrop. While it does capture the spirit of horse racing and all that goes with it, as a slot machine it's a bit basic for the lack of a better word.
Looking at the paytable you'll find 8 standard symbols that include low-value A, K, Q and J royals as well as 4 jockeys and their horses. The jockey dressed in red, riding the white Cremello is the most valuable of the group, giving you 12.5 times the stake for 5 on a full payline. The wild, featuring Peter Scudamore himself, substitutes for all symbols except the scatter and the Bet Slip symbol.
Scudamore’s Super Stakes (NetEnt): Features
There are 3 features to benefit from in this game. First, you have the random wild feature which can trigger randomly upon any given spin. When activated, it will provide you with 2 to 5 wild symbols randomly positioned on the reels.
There's also a Bet Slip feature. In the main game, players are offered the opportunity to purchase a bet slip. It will ask you to choose a symbol to be collected within a set number of spins. There are 4 "bets" to choose from:
- Collect 11 wilds or scatter symbols in 10 spins - pays 5.85x
- Collect 23 red, purple or green jockeys in 20 spins - pays 16.4x
- Collect 46 blue jockey or A and K royals in 40 spins - pays 75x
- Collect 92 Q or J royals in 80 spins - pays 1242x
The feature will keep track of how many times your symbol has landed on the reels and if you manage to land your collectable symbol in the selected number of spins, a cash prize is awarded based on a multiplier value times your bet value.
The main event in Scudamore’s Super Stakes is the Peter's Classic Cup feature. Triggered upon landing the trophy scatter on reels 1, 3 and 5, the game transitions to an extended reel set featuring 5 reels, 4 rows and 32 paylines. Before you can proceed you will be asked to pick 1 of 4 horses to compete for you in the race, each representing a different level of risk and volatility.
- Divine Fortune: Red A symbols + red jersey (5000x potential)
- Berry Max: Purple K symbols + purple jersey (500x potential)
- Gonzo's Quest - Green Q symbols + green jersey (100x potential)
- Tin Foil Hat - Blue J symbols + blue jersey (50x potential)
Once your choice has been made, the race can begin and the free spins played out. All 4 horses are now positioned on the track and for every winning combination you land, your horse will move 1 spot on the race track. The first horse to advance 4 spots takes home the trophy, ending the feature. Most players will for apparent reasons likely be tempted to go for the 5000x win, but keep in mind that it's also the most volatile option with low probability of winning the race. In contrast, Tin Foil Hat (a pun towards gamblers who believe slots are rigged) is a low-risk horse with a very high chance of winning.
Scudamore’s Super Stakes (NetEnt): Conclusion
If you're into horse racing and gambling, Scudamore’s Super Stakes is a no brainer. Even if you're not, it's definitely a game worth investigating. It's an interesting concept slot and NetEnt has managed to transfer the spirit of horse racing into the slot format quite well here. The potential is not too shabby either. While most of the potential is allocated to the Classic Cup feature, there's an acceptable top prize of 500x on offer in the base game. The Bet Slip feature offers some thrill as well with a whopping 1242x potential.
Preferably, we would have liked to see the payouts being distributed a little bit different in the free spin feature as the jump from 500x to 5000x is quite high. As such, it feels more or less like an all or nothing deal. 50x or even 100x is utterly useless and would offer no excitement at all on any race track in the world.
All in all, however, it's an ok slot with a bit of an unusual twist and quite decent potential. We'll likely be flogging a dead horse, but with our bet on Divine Fortune, there will undoubtedly be some exciting races to look forward to.
Scudamore’s Super Stakes is a competent slot charged with sufficient horsepower.
