Candy Corner: Slot Overview
We've probably said it before, and we'll likely say it again, but software provider Pragmatic Play does like its sugary goods. Sweet Bonanza 1000, Sugar Rush 1000, Candy Stars, Candy Blitz, Sweet Kingdom, and on and on it goes. If, like Prag, you're a sugar guy or gal, then you better start fast clapping with glee because the studio has gone and made another. This one is Candy Corner, and it lives up to its name by being both a candy slot and a game that drops sweet little treats in the form of modifying symbols in the corners of its gaming area.
Hopefully, the gameplay is something special because the background imagery is not. While there's nothing eye-wrecking about the visuals, they're the run-of-the-mill, pinky, apricoty, blue, candy land special-type stuff. A candy house sits in a candy land, of, okay we get it, this is a candy game. As such, the atmosphere is light, buoyant, pleasant, and easy-going enough to encourage a quick spin or two to see how it all falls together. Or apart.
Candy Corner has a big 7x7 gaming screen, though the four corner positions may be vacant, as that is where special modifying symbols may land. Bets of 20 c to $/€240 per spin may be placed in what is a highly volatile game. Max RTP is 96.5%, and to win in this cluster paying slot means connecting at least 5 matching symbols in vertical or horizontally adjacent positions.
Cakey, fruity stuff are Candy Corner's pay symbols. There's a banana, a berry, a watermelon, a kiwi fruit, a star, a blue block, a doughnut, and a red blob item. Six-of-a-kind clusters are worth 0.2 to 1 times the bet, while the biggest clusters have 30 to 49 matching symbols in them, paying 10 to 200 times the bet. The wild symbol appears on all reels, counting for any regular paying symbol. The tumble mechanism means after winning combinations have paid, they disappear from the reels. Symbols drop downwards, and new ones come in from the top to fill the gaps. If a new win appears, tumbling triggers again, ending only when no new win is created after a drop.
Candy Corner: Slot Features
Candy Corner gets its name in part from the 4 positions in each corner of the grid that can land modifying symbols. In the free spins round, a certain number of modifiers are guaranteed to hit, and the bonus can be bought.
Modifier Corners
The four corners of the gaming matrix have special empty spots. On any spin, a random number of modifier symbols may land in the special spots. In the base game, only one modifier of the same type may land on the same spin.
- Direct Money Award - lands with an amount of 2x to 50x the bet which is instantly won.
- Win Multiplier - lands with a multiplier of x2 to x100 that applies to all symbol wins on the spin. More than 1 Win Multiplier symbol adds their values to each other.
- Add Wilds - 2 to 8 wilds are randomly added to the reels when it hits.
- Big Wild - when landed, a 2x2, 3x4, 4x4, or 5x5 big wild is placed on the reels.
Free Spins
Hitting 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 scatter symbols awards players 6, 8, 10, 12, or 14 free spins, respectively. In free spins, up to 4 modifiers of the same type can land, except Big Wild, where only two can land at the same time. It is also possible to land Extra Free Spins modifiers, which award up to +5 free spins. In the normal free spins mode, at least 2 modifiers of any type are guaranteed on each free spin.
However, when free spins trigger, there is a chance the golden version is awarded. In golden free spins, before the round begins, a random modifier is chosen to appear on every free spin as the third guaranteed modifier. If Extra Spins are chosen as the random modifier, players get an extra +10 free spins, and only 2 modifiers are guaranteed on each free spin.
Bonus Buy
The free spins round can be instantly bought from the base game by buying it. Paying 100x the bet gets regular free spins triggered by 3-7 scatters, or paying 250x the bet gets golden free spins triggered by 3-7 scatters.
Candy Corner: Slot Verdict
For a casino game maker with so many candy slots under its belt, Candy Corner was… okay. There's nothing wow magic special going on, no freaky new unmissable machination the developer has unleashed on the world. The tricks Candy Corner does let loose are able to put a positive spin on the board, but the game lacked the suspenseful build-up of Sugar Rush's marked positions and multiplier accrual or the insta-dopamine whack of Sweet Bonanza's multiplier symbols system.
Multipliers are a possibility, but they were relatively rare and generally quite low value, so they failed to ignite much interest when compared to those other two mentioned Prag candy slots. Wild symbols seemed to be one of the most common modifiers - regular wilds and the big ones. They could be productive, and a win cap of 10,000x the bet is a big old pile of sweet stuff. The thing is, when you're playing a game with marked positions all over the place, each position potentially holding an x128 multiplier it is easy to envisage max win achievement. Visualising Candy Corner hitting full capacity required a bit more imagination.
Just to reiterate, Candy Corner provided, on the whole, a cheerful candy land indulgence, juicing cluster paying wins with a handful of modifying features. By the end of the review, Candy Corner's lasting impression was a positive one, but the game lacked a killer hook that the likes of Sugar Rush or Sweet Bonanza had, meaning the thought of a repeat visit was harder to get excited about.
Fair
Candy Corner is a fun, sweet slot, but one which lacks a killer hook.
