Captain Xeno’s Earth Adventure: Slot Overview
Editor’s note: This review evaluates Captain Xeno’s Earth Adventure based on its early access state and may still be under development. We plan on revisiting Captain Xeno’s Earth Adventure once it gets a full release.
Software Provider Play’n GO has been on a roll with their splitting symbol feature, and the concept has another whirl in an online slot titled Captain Xeno’s Earth Adventure. The studio has developed quite a fondness for the splitting device, having popped up in games like Shimmering Woods and The Last Sundown, to name just two. Captain Xeno’s Earth Adventure leans a little more to the latter, being a sci-fi themed slot as well, though it’s not as heavy as The Last Sundown‘s dystopic setting was. This game pairs the splitting symbol feature with a group of feisty aliens, Electric Shocks, Emergency Wilds, Engine Recharges, and free spins.
First up is Captain Xeno, who looks like a huggable version of Davy Jones, all tentacled and eye patched. He leads a ragtag crew from an off-world conquest to earth to repair his ship, which is a little beat up now – without being discovered by the planet’s population. The base game takes place in a rocky desert-like area, the reel-set sitting at the back of the Cap’s spaceship before shifting to a tripping-at-lightspeed view for free spins. The game’s got a fun, Guardians of the Galaxy sort of vibe; well, it is on the outside at least, while things might not be so friendly on the inside.
This dual nature is largely due to a highly volatile math model, which Play’n GO has rated as 10 out of 10, so as high as it gets. Checking the game docs will reveal the particular RTP version you’re playing since Captain Xeno’s return value is configurable. The one to go for is 96.2%, dropping away into the sub-90s depending on the market. Lastly, fixing Xeno’s ship has been made possible on any device, where players choose stakes from 20 p/c to £/€100 per spin before blasting off.
Held on a 5-reel, 4-row game panel, players have 1,024 ways to win – in the start at least. Once symbols start splitting, ways to win increase, up to a maximum number of 100,000 at full splitting capacity. Sci-fi-ish 10 to Ace royals make up the low pays, slinging out wins worth 0.3 to 0.4 times the stake for five of a kind. Five high paying symbols appear on the reels as well, all characters named Atom, Drox, Boon, Chief Mechanic Filla, and Captain Xeno. When five premium symbol combinations hit, players collect rewards of 1 to 3 times their stake. Also, wild symbols may land anywhere, possessing the same value as the highest premium while also being able to substitute everything except the scatter.
Captain Xeno’s Earth Adventure: Slot Features
Splitting symbols bring about some extraordinary reel expansion properties, seriously increasing ways to win in the process. As well as the core mechanic are base game modifiers and free spins, where a collection system increases the power of splitting symbols.
With this feature, 1 symbol type is randomly selected to be the splitting symbol. All instances of this symbol type in view are split into 2. This can be anything except scatters or wilds.
On any normal spin, 1-5 wild symbols may be added to the reels. When this happens, a win is guaranteed to hit.
Also, on any normal spin, 2 scatters may be added to the reels to increase the chance of players triggering the free spins bonus round.
Landing 3, 4, or 5 scatters awards 8, 10, or 12 free spins, respectively. The first benefit of free spins is that players have a higher chance of scoring splitting symbols. In addition, the triggering scatter symbols are collected in the scatter collector and carried over to free spins. Any new scatters landing in free spins are also collected in the scatter collector. Now, filling the scatter collector upgrades the splitting symbol feature and awards extra free spins. When 7 scatters have been collected, splitting symbols split into 3 and +4 additional free spins are won. If 4 more scatters are collected, splitting symbols split into 4 from then on, and +4 further free spins are awarded. Once the collector has reached this level, scatters are removed from the reels.
Captain Xeno’s Earth Adventure: Slot Verdict
Chalk up another polished futuristically sci-fi slot with splitting symbols and a high playability factor. Captain Xeno’s Earth Adventure isn’t a major visual feast, but like just about everything else Play’n GO does, there’s no way the game is going to hurt your eyes either. There are no slip-ups anywhere, really, so players can reliably expect a well-oiled, well put together slot that is capable of dishing out thrilling entertainment when the ship’s repairs are going to schedule.
Similar to what Nolimit City is doing with their xWays feature, Play’n GO continues to evolve their splitting symbols system as well. The progress is relatively subtle in Captain Xeno’s Earth Adventure and isn’t apparent unless you collect the requisite number of scatters in free spins. If you do, though, then symbols splitting into 3 or 4 have the ability to rocket ways and wins. For some reason, Captain Xeno’s Earth Adventure brought to mind Infectious 5 xWays, too, and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Play’n GO injects some sort of sticky element in future splitting symbols slots. As it is, Captain Xeno’s Earth Adventure works just fine without any stickiness, producing wins of up to 10,000 times your stake when the ship’s been fully patched up.
It’s hard to shake the feeling Play’n GO is following the pack rather than leading it in regard to its splitting symbols feature, but that doesn’t stop Captain Xeno’s Earth Adventure from being a ton of fun when it fires. Other than that minor observation, there are no major niggles in Captain Xeno’s Earth Adventure, which ended up being another potential hair-raiser from the masters of turning out high-quality slots with astounding regularity.
Captain Xeno’s Earth Adventure follows rather than leads in terms of gameplay trends, but it’s still a highly playable slot by most measures.
