Coin Quest: Slot Overview

Up for a bit of trekking through nature on a coin hunt? Software provider Slotmill is, and the team is taking interested players to the well-trod ground of Central America in an online slot titled Coin Quest. A cluster paying grid slot with an Avalanche win system, Coin Quest comes bundled with a collect system, three types of bonus rounds, and several feature buying options. So, while the theme might not be the most original, Coin Quest has plenty to get stuck into, so slap on some mosquito repellent and join us if you're up for it.

Coin Quest gets off to a positive beginning by presenting a clean, pleasantly rendered, if a little clinical view of an Aztec temple setting. It's got a bit of jungle, some chunky stonework, and more than enough Aztec inspired imagery to set the mood. It didn't inflame passions right away yet is agreeable looking enough to prompt further investigation.

Coin Quest slot

Played on a 5x5 game grid, Coin Quest is a highly volatile slot that provides eligible players with a number of ways of approaching the game. When playing in the normal mode, the RTP can be found at two settings – 96.12% or 94.36%, while stakes range from 20 p/c to $/€40 per spin. Other modes are covered below in the features section, where players in certain jurisdictions can find three bonus buys and the unusual Burst Mode to choose from.

Getting the wins rolling begins when at least five matching symbols land adjacent to each other in vertical or horizontal directions. Winning clusters trigger the Avalanche feature, and there are seven regular paying symbols to work with. These start with three lower value red, green, and blue tiles paying 0.25-0.3x for five of a kind, rising to 6-10x the bet for clusters of 12+ symbols. Then we get three animals and a skull as the four higher paying symbols, worth 0.3-1x the bet for 5 of a kind, up to 12.5-40x the bet for 12+ sized clusters.

Coin Quest: Slot Features

A lot of the big thrills in Coin Quest begin with the Avalanche feature. This removes winning clusters from the grid to make way for a symbol drop to fill the gaps. If a new cluster is created after the symbol drop, the Avalanche feature triggers again. In addition, before symbols drop, a wild symbol is added to one of the empty spaces.

Collect Meter

Avalanches feed into the Collect Meter, which is available in the base and bonus game. Each symbol removed in an Avalanche progresses the Collect Meter by +1. When 25 symbols have been collected, the Sun God feature triggers, adding Coins and Wilds to the game panel. At the end of each base game spin, the meter resets.

Coin Clusters

As well as normal symbols, Coin symbols can land bearing values of 1x to 500x. When Coins land in clusters of five or more, their values are added together and multiplied by the bet. The win is paid out, then the cluster explodes, and an Avalanche occurs; however, one of the empty spaces is filled with a new Coin symbol carrying the total multiplier of the Coin cluster.

Coin Quest Bonus

Coin Quest Bonus symbols appear on reels 1 or 5, and landing 2 of them at once triggers this feature. When you do, 5 free spins are awarded, where the collect meter does not reset until the bonus round ends. During the Coin Quest, Coin symbols remain on the grid, dropping to the bottom of the reels between spins. There they can potentially accumulate into larger clusters and values. Landing a +1 Spin symbol awards one additional free spin. Landing 3 Bonus symbols on reels 2, 3, or 4 upgrades the feature to Super Free Spins and awards +4 additional free spins.

Free Spins

Landing 3 Bonus symbols on reels 2, 3, or 4 in the base game awards 8 free spins. During free spins, whenever the collect meter is filled, it adds random Wilds and Coins to the grid as normal, but it also increases the win multiplier by +1, up to a maximum of x20. Landing the +1 Spin symbol awards an additional free spin, or landing Coin Quest symbols on reels 1 and 5 upgrades the bonus to Super Free Spins, whilst also awarding +4 extra free spins.

Super Free Spins

As well as the two ways mentioned above, landing Coin Quest symbols on reels 1 and 5, plus Bonus symbols on reels 2, 3, and 4 triggers 8 Super Free Spins. Super Free Spins is a mix of Coin Quest and Free Spins.

Fast Track

If this option is visible on screen in your jurisdiction, clicking it opens up three ways of playing Coin Quest. These are:

  • Coin Quest40x the bet buys a Coin Quest trigger with an RTP of 96.21%.
  • Free Spins – regular free spins trigger for 100x the bet with an RTP of 96.36%.
  • Super Free Spins – buy the super version of free spins for the cost of 480x the bet. RTP is 96.58%.

Burst Mode

Another way of possibly playing Coin Quest is in Burst Mode. This is a hyper-fast, no-frills mode that removes the grid, then lets the math model do its thing unhindered. Players select the number of spins they want, plus the stake. Then any wins simply appear on screen as bare numbers.

Coin Quest: Slot Verdict

Slotmill games often feel like the stereotypical nice guy at an office everyone gets along with. The dude who doesn't talk smack behind peoples' backs and always has a pencil to borrow. These are games which are also easy to get along with, yet their all-around nice disposition and lack of edge mean they tend to fall in the middle of the slot hierarchy, being neither outcast nor one of the cool crew. That's fine, though we don’t think Slotmill is aiming for average. This is a studio that turns out perfectly playable slots, with fine features and decent winning totals, but there's a feeling they could do so much more if given a little push.

Coin Quest is a classic example. In Coin Quest, Slotmill has nailed the basics, given the game an attractive look, and included some interesting features. As a thought experiment, let's cast our minds to Print Studios as a comparison, which started out relatively safe with a Book slot before diving into uncharted territory. Not saying all studios have to be daring innovators every single time, but to break into the top clique, that might be the sort of spirit Slotmill will have to adopt.

For now, we're fine playing games like Coin Quest. It's a well-made cluster paying slot with a fun use of symbol collections, multipliers, and coin features, capable of cranking out wins worth up to 10,000x the bet. There's not much more you could ask for, nor little that warrants a major overhaul. Slotmill has made an inoffensive game, but again, one lacking the sort of glittering star quality which would likely make it the first pick in a line-up.

Perhaps, and it feels like we've said this before, Slotmill might do well to put their well-honed design chops to use in a braver theme. It doesn't have to be a psychological thriller set in a Victorian-era psychiatric institute or be too out there. However, perhaps by picking something a little bolder the team might be inspired to step up to the next level?

Coin Quest is a finely tuned if slightly unadventurous game with everything necessary to entertain players looking for a jungle-based grid slot.
