Football Glory Slot: Overview
With the World Cup mere months away, Yggdrasil is the first developer out of the gate to capitalise on football fever. No doubt others will leap on the bandwagon and release their own versions soon enough, but the first one is often the benchmark to which the others are judged. Football Glory is an okay start to the season with good and not so good points. It’s certainly not short of features, Yggdrasil has stacked the game with loads to land, trigger, and collect. And the result? Have fans found something to play during half time, or in between games perhaps? Time to blow the start whistle and put Football Glory through its paces.
When locating a football-themed slot, there aren't too many places it can logically be set. Yggdrasil has plumped for the most obvious - smack bang in the middle of a raging stadium. Where else could it be really? A locker room? Let's see if later competitor slots can be a bit more imaginative. Not to worry, the setting is perfectly natural, and the grid is made up of 5 reels, 4 rows, and 25 fixed paylines. Not the most exciting setup, but let's see. Visually, it looks a bit dated and far from being Yggdrasil's most beautiful game which is a little ironic given football's motto. After lacing up, the next step is selecting the appropriate bet with a wide range from 25 p/c up to £/€125 per spin to choose from. Technically, it's powered by a medium volatile math model along with a solid 96.1% RTP setting. Nothing to complain about there.
The rest of the UI consists of the usual spin/auto spin buttons, but under the reels are four intriguing meters. These are the Glory Meters which are filled when the appropriate wins occur. Winning combinations, incidentally, are formed when three or more matching symbols land consecutively from left to right. The symbols are pretty average and haven't exactly been given free rein with the theme.
On the low side are four J-A royals, while the high pays are four anonymous soccer players in green, blue, red, and yellow kit. The yellow guy is the most valuable at 2.5 times the stake for five of a kind. Obviously, the game would have been a lot more enticing, and costly, if it had included actual superstars. But, that is not really the kind of slot Football Glory is. It feels more banged together with speed in mind to get out there as quickly as possible rather than a no expenses spared project. There is also a golden wild symbol that can substitute for any of the pay symbols and comes into play more during features.
Football Glory Slot: Features
Football Glory is not short of features. Whether you manage to see half of them is the real concern. So let's run through them. First up is the Gold and Silver Cup feature which can trigger randomly at any time no matter what game mode is active.
The Silver Cup awards:
- During base game: 50 – 1000 coins. 7 – 21 free spins.
- During free spins: 50 – 1000 coins, +2-4 free spins, Wild reel, 1-2 extra wilds.
The gold offers:
- During base game: 250 – 10,000 coins, 7-21 free spins, All Star glory Spins, Glory Boost.
- During free spins: +2-4 free spins, Wild reel, 2 extra wilds.
The next symbol of note is the Free Spins scatter. When 3, 4, or 5 of these are in view they award 7, 14, or 21 free spins respectively. The bonus game cannot be retriggered, but extra free spins can be awarded from the Gold and Silver Cups. Now, during free spins, high pays have the chance to score goals and if successful they turn into sticky wilds. Also, before the feature begins, one of these bonuses is randomly awarded:
- All players have Superstar Mode activated.
- Start the round with 1 sticky wild in a random position.
- A random sticky wild reel.
- 5 extra Silver Cups, or 5 extra Gold Cups are added to improve the chance of landing these extras.
On a final note, each time a high pay combination lands, the respective meter is filled with Glory. When a Glory Meter is filled, it triggers 7 free spins with that specific player in Superstar Mode. What that means is that whenever that player symbol lands he is guaranteed to score a goal and transform into a sticky wild.
Football Glory Slot: Verdict
Although Football Glory is a clone of Yggdrasil's Vikings slot, it still manages the feat of being a total borefest which just goes to show what kind of impact the visual presentation can have on a game. We mentioned a slot that could be used as a half time diversion, but if you are shopping around for a quick fire slot, Football Glory probably won't fit the bill. It's a game that suits a long term time approach, rather than used as a quick thrill. This is due to many of the features taking their sweet time in showing up. It's a long haul slot, and filling Glory Meters can take an absolute age.
If you are a player with an aversion to collecting items to trigger features, you probably won't appreciate Football Glory's glacial pace. We are talking about England managing to win the world cup again before the Glory meters are filled. Maybe twice.
If Yggdrasil's first football slot for the World Cup sets the bar, it isn't a particularly high one. There is plenty of room for other developers to swoop in and dazzle fans of the beautiful game away. The most tedious aspect is the base game which is the equivalent of a dull nil-all draw between a couple of local sides. Random Cup drops help, and the features can be quite promising, provided you possess the heroic levels of patience required.
Overall, Football Glory is not the most exciting slot around but might cater to recreation players who like their slots absolutely crammed with features. Yet there is no need to rush, given the year we’re in, a torrent of football-themed slots is a pretty safe bet.
Visually, Football Glory is an uncharacteristically underwhelming game from Yggdrasil that looks and feels more like it was made for UEFA Euro 1996 than present day.
