Frost Queen Jackpots: Slot Overview

A few years back, developer Yggdrasil Gaming released a local progressive jackpot slot based around the famous Victorian private dick titled Holmes and the Stolen Stones. It packed plenty of atmosphere to go with several interesting features. Now they return in an environment that's even colder than a grey winter London day. While many of the core elements have been rehashed, Frost Queen avoids being a complete clone. Played using 5-reels in combination with 20-paylines, Yggdrasil has made a few changes to the features, and the math model is slightly altered. Critically though, the five progressive jackpots have been retained.

Frost Queen Jackpots

One potential issue with Frost Queen is the theme might be a little too close to the kiddies' film Frozen for comfort. What brings these thoughts on isn't just the wintery backdrop, it's the whole castles in the snow thing as well as two rather familiar-looking premiums. Then again, such is the popularity of Frozen that there is always a risk of comparison when doing a snow fantasy game. Whether coincidence or not, the scene is a pleasing one, conjuring up plenty of midwinter magic to supplement the gaming. A suitably fantastical music track provides the final layer of magicality to the spectacle.

Frost Queen Jackpots is available on any device, offering players a choice of bets ranging from 20 p/c to $/€40 per spin. Reading the math model's statistics does indicate the game is better suited to casual players looking for a bit jackpot chasing. Non-jackpot wins, for example, are modest, where payouts of up to 1,265 times the bet are possible. Wins do come quite often thanks to a hit rate of 28.09%, though the low volatility ensures they will tend to the small side. Overall RTP is right on 96%, less than Holmes was by around 0.8%. Keep in mind 3.8% of that is allocated to the five jackpots.

The symbols on hand include frosty J-A royals and four quite valuable premiums. These are jewels, crowns, a jewelled chap, and the Frost Queen, worth 37.5 to 200 times the stake for five of a kind. Frost Queen Jackpots does not use wilds to assist making combinations, but there are several additional ways to win via the features.

Frost Queen Jackpots: Slot Features

Frost Queen Jackpots

While the focus is on winning jackpots, Frost Queen also offers a few extras such as free spins, a Treasure Chest Bonus Game, plus a Pick & Click Chest game. The Pick & Click Chest game is triggered when two mirror scatter symbols land. Here, 5 chests appear on screen for the player to pick one, revealing a prize of 1x -4x the bet, 10 free spins, or a random key.

Land 3 or more scatter symbols to trigger the Magic Mirror feature plus a win of 50x or 500x the bet if 4 or 5 land. The Magic Mirror feature awards free spins or the Treasure Chest Bonus Game. As well as the two methods mentioned above, if players collect 5 identical keys in the base game, they win 10 free spins plus 1 jackpot gem.

During free spins, the value of line wins are multiplied by x3, and the goal is to collect five identically coloured gems. Should this happen, the corresponding jackpot is awarded. Each jackpot pays a minimum prize of:

  • Blue jackpot – seed value of $/€40
  • Green jackpot – seed value of $/€200
  • Purple jackpot – seed value of $/€600
  • Red jackpot – seed value of $/€1,500
  • Orange jackpot – seed value of $/€15,000

Alternatively, if the Magic Mirror triggers the Treasure Chest Bonus Game, players choose one of 3 chests on each level. Finding a reward moves players to the next chamber, until they click to reveal an avalanche which ends the feature. Chests can contain bet wins of 5x to 100x, or random keys for the free spins collection.

Frost Queen Jackpots: Slot Verdict

Just like a Disney movie, Frost Queen Jackpots has been made for general audience consumption. The math model is light, the aesthetics provide a bit of an escape, and there are five progressive jackpots to spin for – what more could the non-discerning player ask for? Anyone who prefers a bit more edge will fail to find much warmth in Frost Queen, and non-jackpot wins aren't exactly massive.

So is it an improvement on Holmes and the Stolen Stones, or Jackpot Raiders for that matter which follows a similar structure? In some ways yes, in some ways no. For one, there are slightly more features, plus more ways to trigger the good bits. Frost Queen possesses an easier going nature, dishing up more wins, more frequent keys and in general feels user-friendlier. On the downside, Frost Queen doesn't have quite as good an atmosphere as Holmes did, particularly in the music department.

Frost Queen’s gameplay does seem to flow more smoothly than Holmes did too. The Pick & Click feature might not sound like much, but it does negate the monotony by providing a little thrill every now and then. The minuscule bet wins are a little pointless, yet keys help. It's worth repeating this, collecting keys does not award jackpots, which it is easy to assume unless you've read the rules. On the whole, if you play Holmes after this one, you notice the long stretches of not much going on, which the Pick & Click negates to an extent.

Yggdrasil has created a rather clever game in Frost Queen. The key collection system gives the slot purpose, extending game time since it encourages hitting the spin button. Pick & Click Chests help here too, breaking up the slog with the odd win or two providing an extra incentive. To sum up, Frost Queen Jackpots might not be a high powered thrill fest, but it is bound to offer an enjoyable jackpot chase for certain players.

Fair

Frost Queen might be alright for some low volatility jackpot gaming, anything more and it will struggle to impress.
