Fruit Fusion Wilds doesn't make the strongest first impression. TaDa Gaming has placed another collection of colourful fruit symbols on a large 7x7 grid, and comparisons with games such as Jammin' Jars and Fruit Party are difficult to avoid. Look beyond the familiar presentation, however, and there's a more unusual Wild system underneath, with Wilds capable of moving, upgrading and eventually splitting across the grid.
Wins are formed from clusters of at least five matching symbols connected horizontally or vertically. Winning symbols disappear and new ones fall into their positions, continuing the cascade for as long as further clusters form. Wilds behave differently: they substitute for paying symbols but remain after a win, jumping to another random position before the next symbols arrive.
The more distinctive mechanic involves 2x2 blocks of four identical symbols. Forming one without a Wild transforms one of the four symbols into a Jam Jar Wild before the remaining symbols are cleared and the grid refills. If a Wild is already present within the block, it can instead receive an upgrade. Possible effects include increasing its size or multiplier, boosting other Wild multipliers on the grid, or splitting into multiple 1x1 Wilds that move to new positions.
Wilds develop further by participating in cascades. Once a Wild has contributed to three, it bursts into four separate 1x1 Wilds, with each inheriting its original multiplier before jumping elsewhere on the grid. There is no traditional Free Spins round, so building and multiplying these Wilds during extended cascade sequences represents the main route towards the game's 10,000x payout potential.
That absence of a conventional bonus is likely to divide opinion. Quiet spins don't have a Scatter trigger sitting in the background to provide an obvious target, and the generic fruit-and-farm presentation does little to generate excitement on its own. On the other hand, concentrating everything into one evolving mechanic means the game doesn't feel as dependent on reaching Free Spins before anything interesting can happen.
Fruit Fusion Wilds is more inventive than its appearance suggests. The influence of other 7x7 fruit and persistent-Wild slots is obvious, but TaDa has done more than simply reproduce the usual formula. The 2x2 transformations, Wild upgrades and eventual splitting mechanic give successful cascade sequences a satisfying progression of their own. A more distinctive theme would have helped considerably, and players who primarily chase bonus rounds may find the lack of Free Spins disappointing, but mechanically there's enough originality here to prevent Fruit Fusion Wilds from feeling like just another fruit-filled cluster slot.
