Grim The Splitter Dream Drop: Slot Overview

And now for something a little, er, grimmer, from software developer Relax Gaming. It's called Grim The Splitter Dream Drop and is an addition to the studio's rapidly expanding range of Dream Drop online slots (there is also a non DD version). If you haven't heard of Dream Drop before, this is Relax Gaming's progressive jackpot network, where the long-term goal is for the largest prize available to progress to a ceiling value of €10,000,000. Hitting anything near that amount in a game like Grim The Splitter Dream Drop would be kind of strange because it is a pretty heavy, dour one. But hey, some people like to explore alternative sides of life; if you are one of them, why not come take a look?

Grim The Splitter Dream Drop isn't overly dour, and it brought to mind a previous Relax Gaming slot titled Hex. Like Hex, Grim The Splitter Dream Drop also had a faintly reminiscent feel of a Peter & Sons game, faintly, that is. There's something about the coins. Anyhoo, the game takes place as if sitting opposite an intense chap called The Splitter across a cobwebbed, coin-littered, flickering candle-adorned table. Grim The Splitter was screaming out for extra padding to fill in its back story. Alas, the game info was a little sparse on details. No matter, it's all a bit dark, a bit grim, yet rather intriguing nevertheless, and there's certainly no Dream Drop slot like this to compare it to.

Grim The Splitter Dream Drop slot - base game

Fairly common amongst progressive jackpots like Dream Drop, the greater the bet, the bigger the chance of triggering a jackpot win is. With this in mind, players can pick stakes of 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin to try their luck using any preferred device type. To get a clear picture of what you're up against, Grim The Splitter Dream Drop is highly volatile, with a theoretical return value of 94% (12% contributed to the jackpot), which might seem meagre compared to a regular slot, but pretty average for a progressive jackpot. Non-jackpot wins aren't too shabby either, theoretically.

Regular run-of-the-mill line wins occur when at least three matching symbols land left to right from the left side of the grid on one of the 25 fixed paylines. Symbols can be split, leading to huge 'of a kind' wins. Values-wise, a five-of-a-kind hit pays 4 to 25 times the bet, while a 20, yes 20-of-a-kind hit is worth 120 to 750 times the bet for the clubs, hearts, diamonds, spades, bat, crow, cat, and dog paying symbols. Wilds are instrumental in Grim The Splitter Dream Drop; one of their functions is substituting any pay symbols when win evaluations take place.

Grim The Splitter Dream Drop: Slot Features

The wild symbol also plays an important role in the Splitter feature, present in the base game and in free spins. The other biggie to look out for around here is, of course, the Dream Drop Jackpot.

Splitter Feature

When a wild symbol lands, its reel is split into two, duplicating the wild and all other symbols on the reel. It is possible to split all five reels; however, in the base game, it is only possible to split a reel once. Split symbols count as multiple symbols for the purposes of making win evaluations.

Free Spins

Players win 7 free spins when 3 scatter symbols land to trigger them. When more than 3 symbols trigger the feature, each additional scatter symbol awards +1 free spin. While free spins are active, each landed scatter symbol also awards +1 free spin. If a bonus symbol is split by the Splitter feature, each split awards an additional +1 free spin.

The scatter symbols that trigger free spins are stored above the reels as Splits. When a wild symbol lands, and the Splitter feature triggers, stored splits trigger. Landed wilds are also stored for later Splitter feature triggers. What it means is in free spins, it is possible to store up to 3 splits per reel and creates wins of up to 20 symbols.

Dream Drop

At the start of any regular spin, the Dream Drop Bonus phase can randomly activate. If five Dream Drop symbols land on all five reels before a normal spin, play moves to the Jackpot pick round. Players are presented with 15 face-down cards on the table. They then pick them one at a time to reveal one of five jackpots. When three of the same jackpot have been revealed, the applicable prize is won. The starting values for the Rapid, Midi, Maxi, Major, and Mega Jackpots are €1, €5, €100, €25,000, and €500,000, respectively.

Grim The Splitter Dream Drop: Slot Verdict

If you're thinking of taking on Grim The Splitter Dream Drop, you better pop the lights on; it might get a bit spooky. Not in terms of theme, as such. Whilst Grim The Splitter Dream Drop sits on the heavier side of the theme spectrum, it's not exactly a jump scare kind of game; any feelings of dread are likely to be more subtle. The potentially spooky part of Grim The Splitter Dream Drop could be running through a bankroll like a hot scythe through hay. It combines high volatility with the sort of low RTP common in massive jackpot games like this, so the going might turn out to be tough, though, not freakishly more so than others in this category.

Okay, we might have been joking around a bit in the previous paragraph, kind of, as any progressive jackpot slot packing these sorts of characteristics has the ability to end up being tough going. For fortunate players, the opposite is possible, though, and Grim The Splitter Dream Drop has a few neat deeds it can perform when producing positive results – up to 10,000x the bet outside the jackpots. The Splitter feature is simple, but has the ability to effectively squeeze extra rewards off the table, and at the upper end of the scale, symbol values lean to the chunky side. Quite all or nothing in some ways, however, and the simplicity induced a feeling of emptiness at times in the base game when not a whole lot was happening.

It's important to note that the non DD version and the DD version are two very different games based on different math models. The non DD version has high RTP, higher hit rate, and higher free spins frequency. If you're not into chasing jackpots, then the better option is undoubtedly the non DD version.

At the end of testing, Grim The Splitter came across as a bit of an oddity, the black sheep of the Dream Drop range, if you will. It's a little peculiar, not in a bad way necessarily, but when placed amongst Relax Gaming's Dream Drop makeovers like Santa's Stack Dream Drop or original releases like Dream Drop Diamonds, it stuck out like a sore thumb. Not saying this is a negative trait or anything, certain players may prefer to try their luck with a game like this than the more cheerful alternatives. And when you think about it, hitting a massive jackpot while a character like The Splitter's skeletal form sits across from you at a table could well up the surreality.

Though a perfectly fine game, Grim The Splitter comes across as a bit of an oddity, the black sheep of the Dream Drop range, if you will.
