Hyper Star: Slot Overview

Microgaming associates Gameburger Studios adds to their 'Hyper' range of slots with a brash Vegas wannabe titled Hyper Star. So far, sister slots in the studio's Hyper series have been pretty run of the mill games, often clinging to the coattails of Gameburger's hit 9 Masks of Fire. Hyper Star splits into a different direction, but where it ends up is just as run of the mill really, relying on dazzling visuals to try to jazz up common features such as Rolling Reels, Multiplier Trails, Free Spins, and Jackpots.

Hyper Star bills itself as 'an undisclosed fun place of gaming and clubbing at night, hinting Las Vegas.' That's a pretty accurate description as the game certainly is bright, lit by a multitude of lights and reflective surfaces like a rhinestone jacket or the inside of a disco ball. Hyper Star might have worked better if Gameburger had pushed the Vegas concept even further, going completely over the top. There is plenty of sparkle as it is, but when combined with the loungey soundtrack, it kind of felt we were stuck outside the casino queueing up instead of going wild in the middle of a heaving gambling den.

Played on a 5x3 sized game area, Hyper Star is available on any device, offering stakes of 20 p/c to £/€40 per spin. With volatility rated as 'Very High', the game is RTP variable, where the most optimal return value is 96.05% - beware, depending on the market, Hyper Star may be set as low as 86.72%. The hit rate, meanwhile, weighs in at 32.88% and occurs when at least three matching symbols land left to right in adjacent reels from the Lefthand side. Keeping track of paylines is irrelevant, meaning players get 243 ways to win.

The symbols used throughout Hyper Star further the Las Vegas hinting and consist of clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades, cherries, dice, casino chips, bells, dollar signs, and sevens. From the dice up, rewards for landing a five of a kid win range from 3 to 10 times your stake. Lastly, appearing on reels 2, 3, or 4 are Star wilds, substituting for all symbols, including scatters. Wilds are also needed to trigger the Jackpot Game; let's take a look.

Hyper Star: Slot Features

Hyper Star - jackpot game

When playing Hyper Star, the features players can look forward to are made up of Rolling Reels, a Multiplier Trail, Free Spins, and Jackpots.

Rolling Reels

Rolling Reels are active in both the base game and in free spins. This mechanic removes winning symbols from the reels, making way for new symbols to drop down into the gaps. Rolling Reels can award consecutive wins from a single spin, only ending when no new winning combination is formed from a drop.

Multiplier Reel

The Multiplier Reel is tied directly to Rolling Reels, being a win multiplier which increases with each consecutive Roll. During the base game, the trail increases from x1 on the initial land to x2, x3, then x5 on the first, second, and third Roll, respectively. During free spins, the Multiplier Trail increases to x3, x6, x9, then x15.

Free Spins

Landing 3 or more scatter symbols in any position awards free spins. Each triggering way awards 8 free spins, up to a possible starting number of 32. Free spins use the higher win multiplier trail going up to x15 as stated above whilst its reels also hold more wild stars. Free spins are retrigged when at least 3 scatter symbols hit.

Jackpots can be won from the base game or free spins. Whenever wild symbols land, they are collected, and when Rolling Reels sequences are complete, there is a chance the Jackpot Bonus triggers. If activated, one of the three jackpots is awarded. Jackpots hold fixed values of 15x, 100x, or 5,000x the bet for the Minor, Major, and Grand prize.

Hyper Star: Slot Verdict

Yeah, nah, don't know, we just weren't feeling this one. Probably because despite all the glitz and glam, Hyper Star's looks and style of gaming has been done so many times before, it felt a bit plasticky. The slot does try hard to overcome the underlying banality with an abundance of flashing lights and faux Las Vegas decor but winds up chilling off the strip like a big-budget travel deal gone awry. No doubt players who like this combination of features will probably be thrilled with a new flashy addition to the fold. Otherwise, Hyper Star delivers quotidian gaming that can be found anywhere and everywhere.

There's not much to add about the features since they're the sort of thing players will be well accustomed to. Rolling Reels do play well with the 243 ways to win system, and Multiplier Trails in both phases of play is a bonus too. This sort of setup has been a crowd-pleaser since it was popularized by the likes of Gonzo's Quest back in the day and is still going strong. Players following Gameburger's 'Hyper' range might be happy seeing something that doesn't follow the 9 Masks of Fire script like Hyper Strike or Hyper Joker did. Though at heart, the games all share a similar template of spinning for jackpot prizes. As to top rewards, the Grand jackpot in Hyper Star is more than double what is possible in the two previously mentioned Hyper games, yet the overall potential is about the same, maxing out at 7,250 times the stake.

Hyper Star does its thing capably enough, but what it had to offer was just too commonplace to get enthusiastic about. So, after a run-through, there was little to no compunction to cross paths with Hyper Star a second time.

If glitz could outshine garden variety entertainment, Hyper Star would be a hit – unfortunately, the game doesn’t shine quite so brightly.
