Le Digger: Slot Overview

Another day, another Le slot, so it seems, as developer Hacksaw Gaming digs deep into its Smokey Le Bandit series. Digging is an apt word in this instance since the game in question is Le Digger, and it sees the grumpy raccoon shift into palaeontologist mode to hunt for treasure or bones. Le Digger inhabits a dry world dotted throughout with fossils just waiting to be dug up. As always, Smokey has dressed up for the occasion, and he jiggles about to the side of the screen, watching the action. Occasionally, he'll take part, throwing dynamite or reacting to events in various ways. The theme is inventive, and Hacksaw Gaming has brought it to life in a charming cartoon manner. The impression formed is that the studio has aimed Le Digger at a mainstream audience, which, if so, should be charmed by the digging in the rocks for rich stuff angle.

Le Digger is a cluster pays slot, creating a regular win when 5 or more matching symbols are connected to each other on the 6x5 grid. Winning symbols are blasted out of sight, to be replaced by symbols dropping down to fill the reels. Cascades trigger again as long as new winning combinations hit. Le Digger expands the series with its Layers and Dynamite Removal extras. In addition, Golden Reveals naturally return, three bonus rounds may be triggered, and four feature buy options.

Layers

After a winning combination has been handled, all regular paying symbols of the winning symbol type are removed from the grid. In addition, one layer of the grid behind those symbols is removed as well. A new layer appears, and new symbols drop into the gaps. This repeats until there are no more wins. There are three layers. Layers 1 and 2 can have low pay, high pay, Wild Dynamite, and scatter symbols. Layer 3 reveals Special symbols.

Dynamite Removal

When the grid settles, there is a chance Smokey throws 1-5 Dynamites onto the grid. Where Dynamite hits, it affects a 2x2 square around where it landed. Affected symbols are removed, as is a layer behind the symbol. A new layer appears, and new symbols fill the spaces. When Smokey throws a Dynamite that affects a Wild Dynamite symbol, the wild explodes, removing symbols and a Layer in a 3x3 square. This can cause a chain reaction if another Wild Dynamite is within the square. If two Dynamites affect the same position, only one Layer is removed. If new regular wins occur, Smokey may throw more Dynamites onto the grid. This can continue till no new win occurs. Scatters and layer 3 are not affected by Dynamite or Wild Dynamite.

Golden Reveals

When layer 3 is reached, Golden positions reveal Special symbols when wins and Dynamite ends. Special symbols are Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Diamond Coins worth 1x-4x, 5x-10x, 20x-50x, or 100x-500x, respectively. Special symbols can also be Collector symbols, Green Clovers, or Gold Clovers. Clover symbols activate after Golden positions have been revealed. The Green Clover multiplies adjacent Coins or Collectors by x2-x20, while Golden Clovers multiply all Coins or Collectors by x2-x20.

After Clovers trigger, Collector symbols activate by collecting values of all Coins and other activated Collectors, storing the total value. After this, all collected Golden positions reveal new Special symbols, and the process repeats.

Tomb Service

Hitting 3 scatters triggers 10 Tomb Service free spins. Players can play the round or gamble. From the gamble, it is possible to win Dig It or a payout of 1x to 50x. Tomb Service keeps the base game mechanics, plus a Dynamite Collector is displayed on screen. Each time a Wild Dynamite is part of a win, it is collected. On the last free spin, the Dynamite Collector activates, and Smokey throws the number of collected Dynamites onto the grid. In this bonus and the hidden bonus, hitting 2 or 3 scatters awards +2 or +4 free spins.

Dig It

Landing 4 scatters triggers Dig It and 10 free spins. Players can play the round or gamble. If the gamble is chosen, Gold Digger or 5x-500x is won. This bonus retains the base game mechanics and displays a Blast Bar on the screen. Each time a symbol is removed by a win or Dynamite in layers 1 and 2, the Blast Bar increases. The bar is progressive till the round ends. Once the bar is full, it resets and can continue to fill. 85 symbols fill the bar to reach Silver, 100 reach Gold, and 115 reach Diamond. When the bar is full, it activates, increasing the minimum Coin type that can be revealed in the next Golden reveal and awarding +5 free spins. Scatters do not land in this bonus.

Gold Digger Hidden Epic Bonus

5 scatters are needed to trigger the hidden bonus with 10 free spins. It keeps the base game mechanics, plus Smokey is guaranteed to throw 5 Dynamites onto the grid on every free spin after regular wins have ended. On Golden Reveals, Coins will be Silver, Gold, or Diamond.

Le Digger's game docs nail it when it mentions 'Smokey and his many, many, many disguises.' Smokey has indeed donned numerous outfits since he debuted in 2023's Le Bandit. From ancient Egypt, Vegas, the Wild West and beyond, the dude gets around as Hacksaw Gaming trundles out everyone's favourite raccoon for another adventure. Or at least, he was everyone's favourite. By now, the shine has dimmed somewhat, the novelty's wearing thinner, and instead of feeling like bold experimentation, it may come across as closer to cashing in. But hey, this is an industry literally built on cashing in, so no one's blaming Hacksaw Gaming for striking while the iron is hot, or lukewarm at least.

The good news is, the Le range still has gas in the tank, and Le Digger complements the Golden Reveal magic with a couple of new addons to refresh the ride. Digging is what we're doing here, and the Layers and Dynamite Removal mechanics are a clever shift away from previous Golden Reveal methods found in other Le slots. The desired outcome remains the same, though, namely, to reveal Coins, Clovers, and Collectors in abundance. Bonus rounds take the system to the next level by accentuating Dynamites and upgrading minimum Coin types. All solid stuff, a little on the repetitive side, but refreshed with all the digging and layering.

Dig to the very bottom of the hole, and what sits in wait is winning potential of 15,000x the bet. Much of Le Digger's entertainment lies in how much players still enjoy the Smokey formula.
