Lucha Legends Introduction

If you've seen the 2006 comedy Nacho Libre starring actor Jack Black, then you're probably already familiar with the freestyle wrestling form that was introduced in the early 20th century in Mexico. If, on the other hand, you are a degen gambler like the rest of us, chances are you first became aware of the phenomenon through online slots such as Luca Maniacs (Yggdrasil) and Luchadora (Thunderkick). This peculiar Latin American spectacle is characterised by wrestlers wearing colourful masks, rapid sequences of holds, as well as high-flying manoeuvres, some of which have been picked up by their American colleagues and still used today.

The Mexican wrestling theme is a popular choice in the entertainment industry and frequently transposed into movies and video games so we're not surprised to see Microgaming churn out a Lucha slot of its own. Just by looking at it, the slot doesn't appear to stick out in any particular way aside from the 2x button left of the reel set. That's the 'Power Up Mode'. It increased your chances of triggering the Super Wild feature which we will look into further below.

The setup is nothing out of the ordinary and pretty much what we've learned to expect from Microgaming by now. It comes with 5-reels, 3-rows and 25 pay lines. As usual, there is no mention of the RTP in the paytable (at least not to non-UK players) which is unacceptable and very unusual these days. Lucha Legends accepts stakes between €0.25 and €37.50 per spin without the Power Up Mode activated and between €0.50 and €75 with the button enabled.

Visually, it's a light-hearted, uncomplicated slot with cartoon style graphics involving a lot of colour, crowd cheers, and mariachi music with a training wrestling ring serving as the backdrop.

Lucha Legends Symbols & Paytable

In total there are 13 symbols in the game of which 10 are standard symbols. J, Q, K and A royals are used as low-value symbols while the premiums are represented by various characters - Ricco the referee, Violeta the ring girl, and wrestlers Burro, duo Sal and Pepe, Martio, and El Diablo. The red-masked hero El Diablo is the most lucrative out of the Luchadores and gives you 12 times the stake for 5 across a full payline.

The wild symbol substitutes for all symbols bar the scatter and only appear on reels 2, 3 and 4.

Super Wild Feature & Power Up Mode

Included in Lucha Legends is the Super Wild feature which may activate randomly in the main game if wilds land to form a winning combination. When initiated, one of two things may happen; 2 adjacent symbols on the reels are transformed into wilds, or a 2x or 3x multiplier is applied to your wins.

Now, if you press the 2x button, the Power Up Mode is activated. It will double your stake, but in return boost the multiplier to 3x/5x or adding 4 wilds as opposed to 2 in normal mode. It should be noted that the value of the symbols remains the same but the max win potential increases. In a sense, it allows players to choose between two different volatility settings.

Lucha Legends Free Spins

Free spins feature

3 scatter symbols on reels 1, 2 and 5 awards 10 free spins. During the bonus, 2 scatters awards 1 extra spin, while 3 scatters retriggers the bonus with 10 free spins. The free spins feature stands out from the main game in two significant ways - the reels are different with more stacked premiums added and more importantly, the Super Wild feature is guaranteed to activate any time a wild lands on the reels if it will form a winning combination in its Super Wild state.

Lucha Legends Conclusion

Lucha Legends is a mediocre slot at best, and even if it's better than most of the slots produced by Microgaming's associated studios, it really doesn't say much in context. Being a low to medium variance game, the free spins feature is activated quite frequently although the payouts are rarely anything to get even remotely excited about.

The slot does have some potential to be fair. The bonus is capped at €165,000 (2200x on max bet) and has a 900 times the stake max win potential per single spin should you land a full screen top symbol with a 3x multiplier in normal mode (the Power Up button decreases the max win to 750x), which means it's all about the Super Wild feature. Furthermore, as the game delivers quite a steady flow of wins, it can undoubtedly be a decent wagering slot. As gamblers, however, we want to feel the pulse, but unfortunately, all we get playing Lucha Legends is a flat line.
