Multiplier Odyssey: Slot Overview
After picking up double honours at the 2020 Bigwinboard Awards for best game and best provider, plenty of eyes are on what Relax Gaming might do next. Unsurprisingly, expectations were huge over how the studio would dazzle the iGaming world. What they’ve released is Multiplier Odyssey, an outer space adventure that is worlds apart from their smash hit Money Train 2, but equally potent.
From the moment Multiplier Odyssey loads, a strong video game element comes across. A brief animation introduces the concept, where players find a 5-reel, 15-payline game area set in the cockpit of a jump ship as it rips through the cosmos. There is a reminder, tenuous perhaps, of an old PC game called Wing Commander from Origin Systems, though with vastly updated graphics. As well as static imagery, animations are great, so when the bonus triggers, Multiplier Odyssey slightly blurs the line between slot and video game even further. It doesn’t go too far though, so you always feel like you’re playing a slot, even when you’re knee-deep in the bonus game.
Players can head off-world on any device, selecting bets from 10 p/c to £/€20 per spin. Though equipped with a respectable RTP value of 96.5%, Multiplier Odyssey is highly volatile and appears to pour much of it into free spins. It means the main game can be taxing to both your balance and sanity. In that aspect, and a few others as well, Multiplier Odyssey does feel closely related to Money Train 2. A Coin Collection feature is provided, but it ends up as more of a sideshow than a motivator. Free spins can be bought in some jurisdictions if time is a factor; otherwise, triggering them naturally can be quite the odyssey indeed. The upside is huge winning potential is on hand when they are active.
As for symbols, low pay clubs, spades, diamonds, and hearts feel a little anachronistic amongst the futuristic theme, though they have been wrapped in a metal frame to help them blend in. On the high side are four character symbols – a young adventurer, an alien, a lady with half a shaved head, and a bearded warrior. Landing five of a kind wins from this lot are worth a payout of 15 to 50 times your stake. The wild symbols are worth double the top premium at 100x and substitute for all other pay symbols.
Multiplier Odyssey: Slot Features
During base game play, Coin symbols appear on reels 1, 2, 3 or 4, displaying a multiple of the bet value. When a Collector Symbol lands on reel 5, players win any Coin Symbols present on reels 1 to 4. If an x3 Collector is in view on reel 5, it triples the amount won from the collected Coin Symbols.
Free spins are awarded when 3 or more scatter symbols land anywhere in view simultaneously. Once in, a life meter can be seen to the left of the reels which reduces by 1 on each non-winning spin. Players start the round with 7, 8, or 9 lives if 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols triggered the feature.
Above the reels, 11 multipliers appear in the form of spaceships. Whenever a win occurs, the next multiplier on the list has its value applied to the total, then is removed, making the next multiplier active for future wins. When the first 10 multipliers have been cleared, the Super Multiplier is activated. If you reach this final stage, lives don’t count. Instead, a limitless number of spins will take place until a win hits at which point the Super Multiplier is applied, and the feature ends. The value of the Super Multiplier has been randomly decided before entering free spins and can be x100, x200, or x300. While all of this is going on, 4 modifier symbols may land to help you on your way;
- Target symbol - removes the lowest multiplier from the list.
- Single spaceship symbol - increases one random multiplier by 1.
- Group of spaceships symbol - increases all active multipliers by 1.
- +1 symbol - increases the life meter by one.
Depending on location, players may also be able to access a bonus buy feature. If so, a payment of 70x the bet guarantees at least three bonus symbols on the next spin.
Multiplier Odyssey: Slot Verdict
It’s hard to avoid a comparison in light of the Award, but there is a tangible Money Train 2 vibe going on. For one, it’s all about the bonus game here as well, where Multiplier Odyssey gets the chance to blast off. Like MT2, getting there can be a colossal challenge and battling through the base game takes significant time and patience. There is the Coin Collection feature on hand to ease the pain, it is rare though, to the point of not making much impact on the outcome at all. Should you manage to trigger free spins, or buy them, then it’s a whole other matter.
Of course, making it to free spins is no certainty you’ll tap the galaxy’s riches. Bonus games could be extremely hit and miss as well, with results ranging from dismal to great. One thing they certainly are not is boring whatever the outcome might be. Blasting through ship multipliers can get intense, especially when reaching the upper levels. Tripping the final Super Multiplier is where scoring a big win is a distinct possibility, up to a whopping 50,000 times the stake. Knowing Relax Gaming's advertised potential is actually achievable, as Money Train 2 has proven, we can probably expect Multiplier Odyssey to provide some interesting footage on social media in the future as well.
In short, Multiplier Odyssey is another great looking, high-performance slot from Relax Gaming. Its brutal 'take-no-prisoners' attitude in combination with the no-nonsense potential and a highly dramatic bonus game is a call to arms that will frustrate or excite, but cannot be ignored.
Multiplier Odyssey has no ambition to redefine how online slots are played, it instead executes extremely well on an established formula.
