Mystery Spin Deluxe Megaways (Blueprint Gaming): Review
The idea of combining Megaways with linked reels is not a unique concept and is something we've seen already in Big Time Gaming's mega potential monster Queen of Riches. NetEnt's original version meanwhile, which used to be one of its most talked about games back in the days, has died a slow death as players began giving up on it with claims that it had started to behave differently and that it had been modified following the conversion to the html5 format. In fact, lengthy discussions have ensued on forums around the web, debating whether it has been nerfed or not.
Some five years after the release of Twin Spin, NetEnt had the chance to make things right and to further build on the success of the brand, but failed utterly. Twin Spin Deluxe, released in 2018, turned out to be a dreadful medium variance 6-reel creation with cluster pays, and a max win of 1000 times your stake. If you're waiting for a caped hero to bring Twin Spin into the modern era, your call has been answered, for Blueprint Gaming has seized the opportunity to fill the void that NetEnt left in the wake of its blunder. Knowing how protective NetEnt is of its intellectual property, however, don't be too surprised if this one gets pulled from the market.
Mystery Spin Deluxe Megaways is a 6-reel slot that offers up to 117,649 ways to win. Making use of Big Time Gaming's trendy mechanic in combination with synced reels, it comes with Mystery Symbol feature that randomly transforms all instances of it into one of the regular symbols. There's also a Mystery Spin feature where only Mystery Symbols will appear on the linked reels. You can play Mystery Spin Deluxe Megaways across all devices from 10 cents to 10€ per spin.
Those familiar with the original will find similar elements in Blueprint's version. While it's undoubtedly a fresh vision and a fabulous adaptation, you can't disregard the fact that it's so similar in look and feel that it cannot be regarded as anything else other than an attempt to capitalise on Twin Spin's fame. Just like the original, Mystery Spin Deluxe Megaways is a vibrant slot with a retro/classic fruit machine feel, and even the disco background music is basically a cover of Twin Spin's soundtrack.
Symbols on the reels include A, K, Q, J and 10 royal values as well as more lucrative cherries, lemons, grapes, oranges, and watermelons. The most rewarding is the lucky seven which yields 10 times your stake for a combination of 6. There's a wild included as well which you don't get to see too often.
Mystery Spin Deluxe Megaways (Blueprint Gaming): Features
Being a Megaways slot, the rows vary on each spin and can randomly appear between 2 to 7 symbols high. Unlike other Megaways offerings, however, it comes with a set of fixed win ways (since the reels are linked) that can give you 729, 4096, 15625, 46656 or 117649 ways to win.
Blueprint Gaming can't get enough of its Mystery Symbols feature and you can expect more of it in this game as well. When the Mystery Symbols hit, all instances of them will transform into a randomly chosen regular symbol for increased winning potential. The main attraction, of course, is the linked reels feature, or the In Sync feature as Blueprint calls it. When randomly activated, up to 6 reels can spin in synchronisation, showing matching symbols on all linked reels. Moreover, the symbols can also appear super stacked on the reels. In combination with the randomly triggered Mystery Spin feature, where only Mystery Symbols will appear on the linked reels, the outcome can result in a max payout of 10,000 times your total stake.
Mystery Spin Deluxe Megaways (Blueprint Gaming): Verdict
Using NetEnt's Twin Spin as a basis, Blueprint doesn't push the limits of the fundamental idea too far and they certainly haven't wasted the gripping premise of the game by over-complicating things. If we were to design a Megaways version of the original ourselves, this is pretty much how it would come out. The only gripe we have with it is, well, that it's essentially a copy of the original, not only in terms of gameplay, but visually as well, something that could very well end up causing some friction between NetEnt and Blueprint.
Though an overall entertaining and solid game, it doesn't come without some minor annoying moments. For example, seeing how frequently the game expands to its full 117k win ways setting (more often than what you usually see in Megaways slots), you would expect it to reward bigger wins. You'll soon find yourself rolling your eyes as nothing ever seems to come out of it, or even worse, when symbols fail to connect in spite of the massive number of paylines.
When comparing Queen of Riches, Twin Spin and Mystery Spin Deluxe Megaways, three of the most prominent synched reel slots on the market, Queen of Riches comes out as the champion every day of the week as we find it to be much more explosive, volatile, and original. With that said, they're both fantastic games and if you're looking to kill some time playing online slots, you can't go wrong with either. Nevertheless, we'll have to wait and see if slips through NetEnt's team of lawyers.
