Rex the Hunt: Slot Overview

Online slots are one space where dinos and humans sometimes bump up against each other, and while this didn't happen in the real world the way it's often depicted in TV or movies, imagine if it did. Imagine strolling through your local park, beach, or forest as some ruddy great lizard with massive teeth emerges from the shadows looking for a feast. Hopefully, if that scenario ever came to fruition, we'd have characters around like the one in Rex the Hunt, an online slot from Swedes Thunderkick. This guy, and it's not clear whether his name is Rex or not, doesn't take any dino funny business but looks like he actually hunts them. Players can join him as he does so if they like, in a slot with a large focus on mystery symbols in both its base game and free spins bonus round.

Thunderkick has used a variety of settings in the past, yet one they have returned to a few times is the foresty/jungley one. This sort of location cropped up in previous games like Beat the Beast Quetzalcoatl's Trial, Phoenix Paradise, and Crystal Quest Deep Jungle, and the studio has brought back the dank for Rex the Hunt too. Actually, Rex the Hunt's outdoor space isn't all that dank, but glows green with a vaguely B-movie atmosphere and felt a little like Raptor DoubleMax. All in all, the view has been crafted with typical Thunderkick flair, so it is easy on the eyes.

This particular hunt may take place on any device, with players picking a stake of 10 p/c to $/€100 per spin. Be on the lookout for four RTP configurations, maxing out at 96.16% before dropping as low as 90.15%, depending on the market. Mathematically speaking, the action is about as volatile as the mood of a T-Rex, which means swings can be relatively large. In the centre of the screen rests the gaming area, which utilises 6-reels lined up in a 3-4-4-4-4-3 formation. Whilst well versed in the use of a 4,096-ways-to-win format, Rex the Hunt actually makes due with only 178 connecting pay ways, so wins are created when matching symbols start from the leftmost grid and are connected across at least three consecutive reels.

For symbols, Rex the Hunt has ten regular pays, divided into low pay 9-A card icons, four mids called the blue dinosaur, yellow dinosaur, silver dinosaur, and the red dinosaur, while the hunter is the sole high pay. A six-of-a-kind royal win awards 0.7 to 1.5 times the stake, whereas the other symbols award 2 to 10 times the bet. Lastly, wild symbols appear on all reels, too, and can replace any normal pay symbol to complete a win or pay 10x the bet for six connected wilds.

Rex the Hunt: Slot Features

Rex the Hunt sticks to a few fairly basic tricks when it comes to features. These are stacked mystery symbols and a bonus Game.

Stacked Mystery Symbols

Mystery symbols can appear on reels 2, 3, 4, or 5. At the end of a spin, if there are mystery symbols in view, they all reveal the same matching symbol, which can be anything except the scatter.

Bonus Game

Scatter symbols are present only on reels 1 and 6. When scatter symbols hit on both reels, 10 free spins are awarded. While the bonus game is active, landing scatter symbols on reels 1 and 6 awards an additional +5 free spins. In the bonus game, when mystery symbols hit, they become sticky for the rest of the feature. Any mystery symbols in the triggering base game spin carry over to the bonus game.

Rex the Hunt: Slot Verdict

There you go, short and sweet. Thunderkick has hardly pushed itself out of many comfort zones when the team made Rex the Hunt. It's a little like a Beat the Beast slot, being simple, straightforward, and having zilch in the way of complex rules, nor are there many innovative new features. All it has really is mystery symbols in the base game or sticky mystery symbols in the bonus game. Despite the attractive presentation, if mystery symbol reveals, don't float your boat; there's not much left about Rex the Hunt that will make you change your mind.

On the other hand, players partial to some mystery reveals get plenty of those in Rex the Hunt. That's all there is, really, yet the way they remain on screen in free spins has some potential. Having said that, the game comes with a maximum win figure of 4,000x the bet, which is definitely lower than expected for a Thunderkick game. With the simple rule set and modest max win, Rex the Hunt came across, maybe not as filler as such, but not a game the studio really poured its heart into. There's entertainment to be had in Rex the Hunt if the subject matter and gameplay appeal, though questions arose over the shelf life and just how replayable Rex the Hunt might be.

It does go to show that studios have plenty of mileage to squeeze out of mystery symbols. Similar-ish concepts were put to good use in games like Beast Mode and Horror Hotel, for example, proving the enduring popularity of the mystery symbol. When stacked against those two games, Rex the Hunt feels like a fun, if lighter alternative, being limited in what it can do and how far it can go while doing it, by comparison.

Rex the Hunt does interesting things with sticky mystery symbols, but it hardly approaches apex predator status.
