Runner Runner Megaways: Overview
We hope you’re feeling energetic players because developer Stakelogic is in the mood for some exercise with Runner Runner Megaways. Then again, the developer has gone for a physical slot simulator approach, which would suggest a significant amount of sitting down.
The whole experience is puzzling all round. Okay, so it’s a new Megaways version for their Runner series of slots, fine. But aside from that, it doesn’t offer a whole lot that other releases in their line-up don’t already. Ah well, what’s life without a bit of mystery?
It was quite a journey getting to this point in the series’ evolution. Before this came several Runner slots such as Random Runner, Nudge Runner, Runner Runner – and that’s just from Stakelogic. Factor in several Greentube releases, and there is a lot of running going on out there.
As well as its predecessors, Runner Runner Megaways is strongly influenced by Stakelogic’s fruity filled slot Super Wild Megaways. In fact, Runner Runner Megaways reminds one of the classic 1980s Arnie movie Twins – a lot of contributions went into its creation. So did the slot DNA milkshake result in a Julius or a Vincent? Let’s head to the virtual local to find out.
As mentioned, the game makes you feel like you are sitting in a crowded room in front of a live slot machine. Except for the sound, this is an acquired taste. Sure, it’s a carryover from the non-Megaways versions, but all those 8bit bleeps and bloops end up shattering the ambience. Of course, some may love them. Others will be smashing the mute button like there’s no tomorrow.
However, the live effect is carried quite well by the blurred background and the 6 reels which are set in a physical style cabinet. As typically is the case with Megaways slots, each reel holds 2 to 7 symbols, producing 64 to 117,649 ways to win on each spin. Playable from 10 p/c to £/€20 per spin – or double if you activate the Super Stake feature – the game comes with an RTP of 95.99% combined with a highly volatile math model.
Interestingly, the symbols are almost the exact same ones we got with Stakelogic’s Super Wild Megaways. From top to bottom, there are cherries, oranges, plums, pears, bells, strawberries, grapes, watermelons, and sevens. One new addition is the star which is worth 60 times the stake for six of a kind. The star also pays out when two land, whereas the other symbols need at least three of a kind. There is a wild, but it is tied to the Super Stake feature as you will see.
Runner Runner Megaways: Features
Fruit slots are renowned for being basic, and Runner Runner Megaways certainly isn’t the most feature-filled Megaways slot. However, there are a few to cover including cascades, free spins, the Super Stake, and a gamble feature.
Whenever a winning combination lands in the base, or bonus game, the cascade feature is triggered. Winning symbols are removed to let new ones fall into the gaps, providing extra chances to win. Cascades continue to roll until no new combinations appear.
Cascades get a boost during free spins which are triggered when 4 or more scatter symbols land anywhere on the reels – 4 scatters award 8 free spins, plus 5 more for every extra scatter symbol in view. During free spins, a win multiplier comes into play, starting at x1 and increasing by +1 for every cascade. Free spins can be retriggered to extend the feature.
Scatters are helped by the Hold feature. During the base game, 3 or more scatters trigger this feature, or 2 or more during free spins. The reels displaying scatters are held while the others get a respin. Respins continue until no new scatters land.
The Super Stake feature appears on most Stakelogic games at the moment, adding additional ways to win for double the stake. Activate it when playing Runner Runner Megaways to have wild Bar symbols added to the reels. Remember, no Super Stake, no wilds.
Lastly, the gamble feature. Here it’s a basic coin toss where you can attempt to double or nothing your winnings up to 5 times in a row, or 250 times the base bet.
Runner Runner Megaways: Verdict
It’s a bit of head-scratcher this one. Runner Runner Megaways is so close to other similar slots it feels a little redundant. The market for Megaways fruit slots in a virtual setting must be larger than you think. That, or the team had some old code lying in a folder, set for recycling. Who knows. Whatever the reason, fans of the slot type have a new Megaways driven cabinet extravaganza to jam.
Let’s look past the enigma for a moment at the rest of the game. There are moments, just not enough of them to make Runner Runner Megaways a super compelling choice. Perhaps it was an opportunity to flex the Super Stake feature with a fruit Megaways?
Usually, the Super Stake option seriously enhances the game it is a part of – Gods of Death being a prime example. It helps here too, of course, but paying double the stake for wild symbols? It just doesn’t sit right. Wilds are an integral part of any Megaways slot and having to pay extra for it by clicking a button with a fancy name just seems like a lazy approach.
What’s to stop players selecting from dozens of other Megaways slots where wilds come as standard? Even in the growing Megaways fruit category, there are several other choices. For a start, Stakelogic’s own Super Wild Megaways has a slightly higher RTP and the same vibe. Or Games Inc’s Joker Megaways offers a different twist on the Megaways format.
When you add up all the elements, the cons start to weigh against the pros. Each aspect of Runner Runner Megaways feels like it’s been done better (or at least the same) elsewhere, making it hard to recommend highly. Still, in spite of its flaws, it’s still a decent slot and it’s easy to see how the game will appeal to those who go mad for the physical online slot thing.
