Sabres and Swords Charge Gigablox: Slot Overview

As well as developing several slots powered by their Gigablox mechanic, Yggdrasil has also palmed the feature off to partner studios to see what they can do. Another case in point is Sabres and Swords Charge Gigablox, an online slot from developer Dreamtech Gaming. Dreamtech has based the game around warfare characteristic of the Napoleonic era, where armies lined up and charged at each other, perhaps preceded by some heavy bombardment to soften the other side up. It's this world of swords, sabres, steeds, and elaborate facial hair that players enter to take on Dreamtech's battlefield laden game.

Visually, Sabres and Swords Charge Gigablox is like a recreation of a famous battle scene using plastic or metal models. On one side of the grid, we have a red-shirted contingent running and shooting at their opposite side, the blues on the other. When free spins trigger, the cavalry is literally let loose. Between the two opposing armies lies the game grid. Technically a 6-reel, 6-row panel, Gigablox mixes this up by merging reels to create symbol blocks of 2x2 to 6x6 in size. With an oil painting-like background, Dreamtech has created an original looking game, yet the inclusion of all those toy soldiers might be off-putting to some.

Players can sabre up on any device by selecting total bets of 25 p/c to $/€75 per spin. The volatility is high, though the 2,880x potential is not for a Gigablox game, or any type of slot really, slightly dinting the appeal. There are no issues with an RTP value of 96.11%, while players can look forward to collecting a win once every five spins or so due to a hit frequency of 19.6%.

Sabres and Swords Charge Gigablox utilises 50 fixed paylines, zigging their way across the game panel to land winning combinations of three or more of a kind on. Players have 8 regular pay symbols to use- 4 are military insignias, used as the lower value tiles, and 4 soldiers as the higher values. Landing a combination made up of six premium symbols is worth a payout of 3.2 to 6.4 times the stake. Cannon covered wilds are worth a bit extra at 9.6 times the stake if six land in a line, and can be used to replace any symbol in the game except the free spins triggering scatter symbol.

Sabres and Swords Charge Gigablox: Slot Features

Swords and Sabres Charge Gigablox - free spins

Yggdrasil's Gigablox mechanic is the main feature in Sabres and Swords, joined by Engage the Enemy Free Games, where collecting scatter symbols leads to extra free spins or removes symbols from the reels.

Gigablox randomises the results of every spin by altering the size of symbols on different reels. Gigablox may appear in any dimension from 2x2 to 6x6 sized blocks, though their individual symbols are used to calculate line wins. So, a 2x2 block equals 4 symbols. Scatter symbols can also land as Gigablox.

Landing 5 or more scatters on the grid in the base game triggers the Engage the Enemy Free Games feature - 1 free spin is awarded for each triggering scattering symbol in view. Scatters land during free spins as well, and every 3 collected either removes the lowest value symbol from the reels or awards +3 free spins. The effect alternates, so the first is a symbol removal, the next is extra free spins, and so on, up to a maximum of 48 collected scatters.

Also, in each free spin the largest Gigablox in view has a multiplier assigned to them. The value of the multiplier depends on the size of the Gigablox, so 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, or 6x6 sized symbols bring in an x2, x3, x4, x5, or x6 modifier, respectively. If there are two Gigablox symbols of the same size on the reels at the same time, the multiplier applies to the leftmost one.

Players who really can't wait to charge into free spins can buy them, where these features are available. The cost is 80 times the bet and triggers a spin that will result in entry to the free spins feature. Only scatters are active on this spin - no other wins are paid.

Sabres and Swords Charge Gigablox: Slot Verdict

Sabres and Swords Charge Gigablox' target audience is 'players with nostalgia from playing with toy soldiers in their youth.' Fair enough, everyone has different interests, but it feels a bit odd when you see toys in a slot. If Playmobil took a break from crafting plastic figurines and decided to dip a digit in the iGaming industry, it would probably look close to Sabres and Swords Charge Gigablox.

If you're unfazed by the plastic soldier bit, let's move on to the gameplay. Sabres and Swords puts up an average performance when it comes to a Gigablox game, not doing anything worse or more exceptional than those that came before it. There is nothing extra in the base game to break up the flow, relying solely on Gigablox to entertain. This it does quite well, but blocks are just a bunch of regular symbols in one place, really, and the paylines system means you are usually dealing with a smaller segment of the grid than you would hope for.

Engage the Enemy Free Games has a neatly designed collection system, though. Progress far enough and having so few symbols on the grid can be pretty nail-biting. Throw in a decent multiplier, and the game gets quite fun. However, Sabres and Swords is limited in what it can ultimately do, with a max win of 2,880x the stake possible for successful cavalry charges.

If you're into Gigablox or toy soldiers, then it'd be worth taking Sabres and Swords Charge Gigablox for a spin or two. As far as these sorts of slots go, it's an okay example. If you prefer something more exhilarating, however, then Hades Gigablox remains the gold standard.
