The Pig Wizard Megaways (Blueprint Gaming): Overview
Revisiting the original Pig Wizard slot for this review, it becomes apparent just how much progress Blueprint Gaming has made in the visual department since its release in 2015. In terms of mechanics and gameplay, it still holds up rather well although the horrendously low RTP of 93.74% is unacceptable for an online slot and means it's best avoided. The Pig Wizard is also paradigmatic of Blueprint - busy and packed with features, just like we know their slots to be today. Funny fact; judging by information on the web, the game was originally going to be marketed as "Harry Trotter - The Pig Wizard", an obvious Harry Potter pun, but with no mention of it in the actual game, the idea seems to have been abandoned by Blueprint prior to release, possibly for legal reasons. At least, that's what we assume.
The sequel, titled The Pig Wizard Megaways is a completely different game as you will see. Utilising 6 reels and up to 15,625 ways to win, it benefits from a collection of reel modifiers as well as a free spins feature where a random multiplier of up to 50x is applied to each spin. Thankfully, the RTP is much healthier here, albeit at 95.75% it's still lower than the 96% that is otherwise industry standard. You can play The Pig Wizard Megaways across all devices from 0.10 to €/£10 per spin.
It may be inspired by the Harry Potter franchise, but The Pig Wizard Megaways does not take itself quite as seriously. With a hog sorcerer as your host, the game has an enchanting atmosphere with a supermoon and a castle in the backdrop. The colours here are vivid, and the imagery creamy and rich in detail. It's an excellent looking video slot in other words. On the reels you'll see six lower value 9 through to A card suits. The four premiums are represented by winged spellbooks, treasure chests, wizard hats, and golden hog coins. The latter is the most rewarding, giving you 10 times your stake for a 6 of a kind combination. There's also a wild which appears on all reels but the first and that substitutes for all symbols bar the scatters.
The Pig Wizard Megaways (Blueprint Gaming): Features
Built using the Megaways game engine, each reel will produce a random number of rows (between 2-7) on each spin. Fully expanded, the game offers 15,625 ways to win. In typical Blueprint fashion, there are also a collection of extras included in the game known as Mystery Mirror modifiers. Triggered randomly on any spin the base game this is what you can expect:
- Spinnus Repeatum - if the symbol in the mirror matches with a reel win, then the symbols matching the mirror hold in position and the other positions respin. If any new winning symbols land in view these are also held and the reels spin again. This continues until no new winning symbols land in view.
- Magical Win Spin - the Pig Wizard adds wilds or mystery symbols to the reels. Mystery symbols reveal any other matching symbols except scatter.
- Winnus Revealo - the Pig Wizard appears at the end of a spin to turn a losing game into a win or upgrade an existing win to an even better one.
The big wins will come from the Magic Spins Free Spins feature which comes into play when you land 3 or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels - 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatter symbols will give you 10, 12, 15, or 20 free spins respectively. Landing 2 or more scatter symbols during the round will give you additional spins - 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatters will reward you with 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25 more spins - with no limits.
Now, the main event here is the random multiplier which is applied to each spin and that can boost your payouts with a multiplier of up to 50x. Moreover, the Mystery Mirror modifiers are in play here as well which means you can benefit from win streaks, extra wilds and mystery symbols here as well.
The Pig Wizard Megaways (Blueprint Gaming): Verdict
The Pig Wizard Megaways may be completely different to the original version, but as Megaways game it doesn't really bring anything new to the table. The main game is mainly about the respin feature which triggers quite frequently. It never seems to result in anything spectacular, however, as the value of the symbols is unusually low. That's also why you will need some help from the random multiplier in the free spins round to land substantial wins.
Superficially, The Pig Wizard Megaways has a lot going for it. The visual production is outstanding, as usually is the case when it comes to Blueprint Gaming, and the features and mechanics offer extended play time. Mathematically, it's not as joyful. The RTP is lower than we'd like to see in a game and the base game is, unfortunately, quite useless due to the low payouts. At least that's how we felt playing the game. The free spins feature sort of makes up for it all, but prepare to be handed loads of low 2x-3x multipliers. Overall, a decent slot but hardly anything that will earn much praise in the casino community.
